Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

Alright, lets get this out of the way. I am NO expert while soldering. I don't even know if you are suppose to heat the wire or the device when soldering, yet I love to try it all.

I was modding my controller to change the 0603 LEDs on top (the 1, 2, 3, 4). I started with #4 just in case I screwed it up. I've never used 4 controllers. I started by removing the existing LED by heating up one side of it and lifting it with a tiny flathead precision screwdriver. I got one side up and I started to remove the other side and suddenly it came loose. The problem is, I must have pried too hard because the solder point on the board came off!

I thought to myself, this is ok. It's only the #4.

Then I did the #3 followed by #2 with no problem at all. I figured by this point I was some sort of a pro. lol. idea So I did the #1 LED. It just so happens I ended up pulling off the soldering point on the board with #1. MORON! blush

Well, I tried filling the point on the board with acid paste flux and tried to get some solder to stick but it didn't work.

Is there ANYTHING I can do?

Both #1 and #4 solder points are the negative side (bottom).

Any help would be greatly appreciated! If I should be posting elsewhere, please let me know a good place to do that.

Thanks,
Shandley

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

Unless your a SMT repairer I'd say that you were screwed but there is a solution.

Which pad did you rip off? You can always solder to the pad that is left and then run a wire from the other side to the next via or solder point on the board.

For lifting a small surface mount LED, capacitor or resistor hold the iron tip against the longest side and flood each pad with a blob of solder, now while bently slide the iron up and down the side to keep all the solder flowing gentle push the part off the pads.

This takes practice, if it's done correctly the part will be left intact I'd advice you to get some old circuit board and practice before you destroy any more boards tongue

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

Thank you so much for your reply. It's not everyday you get one with such a specific question.

I am trying to get a hi res photo of the LEDs so I can show you which points are buggered. I am having a hard time finding the trace so I can solder a wire to it directly. Do you know the PCB I am talking about?

Here is a photo I found online:

I circled the points. I will take a photo of mine when I get home.

I've marked the test point that you'll have to solder your wires to and as I said before get your hands on a dead board and practice a little because if you damage those point your fraked!

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

First, the praise:

Those were some fantastic soldering tips! I found an old Awe32 Sound Blaster sound card and started doing what you said. It worked perfectly! I used some wick to soak up the solder off of the pads and re soldered the parts back in. Worked like a charm! You are right when you say practice. I did get my first diode back in but it looks like garbage. By my 5th, I found it to be 5 times cleaner looking. Plus, by this point, I wasn't overheating the devices.

Thanks again.

Now the concern:

I just hope my controller PCB looks like the one shown in the picture. I have been looking at pictures on the Internet and the black connector that connects the buttons to the board is way different. I just have contacts. I also noticed I do not have some of the holes shown (to get a negative to a center LED).  Were there different versions of this board? I'm quite sure that one came with my 80GB PS3.

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

there are quite a few different ones. looking at one i have apart here is different. the best bet i can say i s hope its the same. if it isint and you have to take a picture put the board on a table(not held so the camera tries to focus on something in the background) and use macro mode (usually a little flower) since you like being handy and you have a extra dvd/cd player around you can make a macro lens outa it for a cell phone cam and you will be able to take clear pictures of the date on a penny. http://www.diyphotography.net/super-mac … a-dvd-lens

soldering tips. use a really fine sand paper to clean the green stuff off the pads. take old IDE cables from harddrives, cd drives (the stiff cables with 80 wires are best) and use that for your wires for the lights. tin the wire and tin the pad you want to solder then hold the wire on the pad and touch the wire with the iron for a second and it should melt right in. u picked one of the hardest thins to solder to begin with, i can solder 60 wires to a NAND 25 mil pitch (small chips with legs on all sides) but still quiver at the thought of smd.

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

It'll take time till you get your soldering skills perfect, I'm used to be a SMT solderer for Jabil Circuit and I spent 15 days being trained for SMT solder work and repairs. So I'm well trained for modding those consoles smile

Not 100% sure of how many different board revisions there are, sorry.

you can also stick a multi meter on these spots then test the test point on the back of the controller for a better solder point

Well, I did it! Thanks to all for the help. I have learned so much and I think I will be muuuuch more careful in the future.

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

Ok, well, all of the LEDs are working but now it is as if the battery isn't. I checked the battery and the battery connector with a voltmeter and get 3.4V

The wire you've used is a bit on the thick side lol, but I guess it works. I replied to your other thread.

Oh I know. That's an old hard drive cable. 28 gauge I believe.

The regular 40 conductor IDE cables are yeah, around the 26 to 28, gauge it can vary my MFR.  The UDMA 80 conductor strands, are about .32 (wire wrap type wire), and is what I use for this type of work.  Worked so much better for modchip installs with the XB1, and making jumpers and all sorts of trace repair work.

Man, I am looking everywhere. I cannot find it without the connectors on it up here in Canada. Any hints where I could pick some up?

I cut the connectors off, and pull the strands apart...  I am an I.T. as well, and have plenty cables lying around.

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

I would prefer to get a roll of the ribbon cable.

I live in BC. I don't think they have a CC by me. I shall look though.

Go to radio shack, and get a roll of wire-wrap wire then.  They sell it, so there has to be an eletronics place up there where you can get a roll.

no RS in canada. they got bought out by circut city and opened up the source. now they're balls.
shadley you should be able to find a role of 30-32 guage wire in a store

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

Thanks to both!

I just checked The Source and found they have 15 meters of 30 awg for $7. Sounds good to me even just for practice. This surface mount stuff is a lot of fun.

I miss Radio Shack. Remember the battery club?

Re: Attention Soldering Experts :) Surface mount problem

We still have Radio Trash here...  Circuit City was bought out too, all the stores here in the US closed down, and they went to an all on-line store.
