Walkthrough & Problem with Swap Magic 3.6

Hi all, Im currently in the process of attempting the method of using Swap Magic 3.6 on my PS3.

Thought i'd do alittle pictorial as I was going along.

Firstly, remove the rubber on the side of the PS3 that it uses to stand on if you have it vertical and remove the torx screw behind this:

Slide the top cover down as arrowed:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/gazza14sr/DSC06079.jpg

This top cover now can be lifted off. This exposes the main casing of the PS3. Removed all screws as ringed in the pic. These are also arrowed on the casing itself.

Then from th back of the PS3, lift the top half upwards as arrowed. Do not try and lift the entire top half in one go, it needs to be angled:

Brighter pic:

(When you first do this, you will have a metal casing around the blue ray drive. I have taken the photos after I had finished tinkering) smile

Now, You will see a metal strip on the inside coming out the back of the memory card reader. Unclip this. (Lift the small black flap up and slide the strip out) Once this is disconnected the top half of the PS3 can be removed.

To remove the top section of the blue ray player, remove the small screws as ringed and disconnect the sensor as arrowed:

You'll be left with this:

Now I'm stuck.

I have watched the swap magic video over and over again on YouTube and the user does not have the top half of the blue ray case on - as the last pic.

The thing is, when I slide a disc in as normal it does not stop at the centre point. It carries on going way passed the laser. I put the top half of the player back on, and when I put the disc in, it stopped perfect and the magnet clicked in place etc and it loaded. How do you do this part without the top section of the case as there is a mechanism on the top section of the case that the disc stops at when it reaches the correct point for it to load.

Any questions on anything just ask, it isnt that difficult to get to the stage I am at. Just afew cautious parts. Anybody know who did the SM trick originally in the video?
Thanks
Gaz

Re: Walkthrough & Problem with Swap Magic 3.6

alright, I should have gone into detail more on this.  This walk through you are doing is excellent keep up the good work.

2 quick notes.

#1 swap magic is not needed at all unless you need to convert pal video to ntsc
#2 works with any firmware so far (untested 1.54)

what you want to do is have a disk in the bd drive before you disassemble it.  this keeps the drive in the disk ready position.  you don't want to use the slide mech at all and if you hit eject with a disk in the drive with the magnet in place you can scratch your super expensive blue-violet laser lens.
use electrical tape over the eject button contact and under the prod.

now you can install the drive and secure it down with two bolts in opposite corners.

what it looks like in the assembled stage

slap in a legit ps2 dvd (with a table of content size greater than or equal to your back up) and boot the system, it will recognize it as a ps2 dvd game.
at the xmb screen push down on the magnet to stop the laser.  it wont stop the disk from spinning so be careful.

swap your back-up and drop the game and magnet so they fall on the spindle perfectly.

now push x or o(j-spec) to boot your back-up.

Thanks very much, that is where I am going wrong - not having a disc in the drive to start with.

I have a HK PS3 with alot of PAL PS2 games so I guess I will need the swap magic disc in order to convert?
Secondly, my Swap Magic disc was originally for my PAL PS2, so would I need a NTSC Swap magic disc to work correctly with the HK PS3. The reason I ask this is because I get the region error when I try to load the Swap Magic disc.

Thanks for the reply, been trying to contact you since I first found the video on utube and ps3news but unfortunately got banned before I could messege you. blush

Re: Walkthrough & Problem with Swap Magic 3.6

yeah, you're going to need a NTSC-J swapmagic, I bought mine from a random site on swapmagic3.com

turns out they don't like it when you expose their money making false hope news.  I should have never posted there, but I got bored and wanted my 15 mins of fame.

Re: Walkthrough & Problem with Swap Magic 3.6

Supragaz, the ps2 switch must be the best option for you right now??, rather then the swap thingy. Great pics by the way!

Re: Walkthrough & Problem with Swap Magic 3.6

HackITandC, Thanks for the advice.

Im currently working on a method that doesnt require opening the PS3 at all, without a switch and without the Swap Magic disc. Just awaiting afew things to arrive

smile

I did use the swap magic method for abit but became abit of a pain, which has lead me to where I am now - trying to find a different way. Hopefully towards the end of next week I may have a answer

Cheers
