My ps3 hasn't completely stopped reading games, but 90% of the time it won't.
It can play CD's & DVD's fine, the game spins & shows loading icon, but then quits.
I've tried lens disc cleaners & vacuuming out the vents, but that didn't help for long.
I'm thinking about taking it apart & cleaning out all the dust with an Air Duster & maybe cleaning off the lens.
The warranty has been out, so do you think it just needs cleaning or is the blu-ray drive going out?
I would hate to spend $150 just for them to clean it.

it's not completely dead or it wouldn't read disc at all correct?
It will load a game sometimes, but only after a ALOT of tries, it did work for a little bit after I vacuumed it & used a lens disc cleaner.
so you don't think I should take it apart & clean it?
will Sony still fix it even after I take it apart?

Does it play BR-D movies though, that is the REAL question. If so, then your security has failed, and is a send back. The Blu-Ray laser is at a different wavelength than the DVD/CD laser. If it does not play BR-D movies either, then you can probably replace the laser Assembly, or buy the same BR-D from Ebay or something, and swap logic boards.

Don't know about Blu-Ray Movies (Don't own one), but it plays games every once in awhile.
It will play DVD's & CD's on the first try, but games are a different story.
The game spins & shows loading icon, but most of the time it never catches.
What if I take it apart, clean it & it still doesn't work, will Sony fix it for me (for $ of course) if it's been taken apart?

It's like a scary/ghost story.
If you do take it apart don't f it up. Even if you can't afford or don't want to pay for sony to fix its still got other functions worth having one for like media streaming, internet browser, upscaling dvd player and still plays psn games and demos. I say this cuz some dude pretty much destroyed his PS3 trying to fix it himself, though i doubt anyone on this site would be so careless.

lol yeah I know not to mess it up, but thanks for the advice
my question is if I take it apart, clean it, put it back together perfectly & it doesn't fix the issue, will Sony still fix it for me?

dude like i told you its your bluray laser. since it reads cd's, dvd's first time that would mean its the laser and not a dirty lens. u can pick up a lens of ebay for 25 dollars http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_trkparms=6 … &_sc=1 or you could get a brand new oem one for 70 http://www.divineo.cn/cgi-bin/div-cn/ps3-kesn both alot cheaper then sending it to sony. and yes sony will still fix it but not under warranty. its a 150 dollar repair

UPDATE
For anyone who is having the same problems as me & wondering what happened with mine...
well I decided to take it apart & much to my surprise it worked perfectly!
I did the same thing on a friends ps3 & cleaning the blu-ray lens fixed his also.
so there is no need to send it to sony or replace the blu-ray drive,
if your ps3 isn't reading games or blu-rays TAKE IT APART, clean the lens & save your money.
i'm not really a tech savvy person, but it was surprisingly easy

WARNING:
if you take your ps3 apart sony will not touch it even if you pay them (thats what I was told when I called them)

i had the same exact problem your having. trust me it will just get worse and eventually not read blu-ray's at all. but i did get an extra 6 months out of it by tearing it apart and cleaning the lens about every 2-3 weeks. the last time it quite working, i didn't get all the parts on the blu-ray player in right, so the player wouldn't take the game in as easy as it should and sony still fixed it without a warranty knowing i took it apart. start saving up for a new laser now cause your eventually going to have to replace it someday.

yeah I figured it won't last forever, but it's working smoothly for now.
my friends ps3 wouldn't read blu-rays or games AT ALL & this fixed his.
worst case scenario I'll have to get a new blu-ray drive eventually & install it myself,
which won't be that hard since I already know the insides pretty well.
either way I'll will NOT be sending it to sony ever, I don't see any point paying $150 for them to fix it when I can a slim for $299.
also if you send it to sony they won't send you your ps3 back, they send you an already refurbished one which I don't like.

I was having the same exact problem so I took it apart and got every bit of the dust out and cleaned the lens with water and q-tips and it worked great for about a month and I am now having the same problem as I was before. It is a lot of work to take it apart and stuff so I have to be in the mood to do it again.
