My girl friend unplugged my laptop when the battery wasn't in. She didnt realize I take it out because my laptop gets kinda hot with it in. Anyway the error message I get is that the BROWSEUI.DLL is missing/corrupt and that I need to reinstall it. I get the login screen but when I log in my screen is blank. I can still ctrl+alt+del to get to the task manager and from there I can launch firefox, cmd, etc. I tried through dos to replace the BROWSEUI.DLL with a working one from my girls Vista laptop. I get the error message when copying over with DOS that the file is corrupt/un-readable and cant be deleted or replaced. Is there another way to reinstall this file or explorer? My laptop overall is running great and I dont want to have to reinstall windows again. On the bright side I know enough about dos to launch programs that I use.

You mean "explorer.exe" that pops up your desktop with the Icons? Also, your LapTop must also be running Vista; you didn't say. If it is XP then you need that one. Did you try to run "explorer.exe" from the task manager?
This issue is caused by a Windows registry error. If you replaced the file, and the error still pops up, it is a registry issue; it needs repaired.
If Vista has "scanreg" run that: "scanreg /FIX"
OR, get to the system restore, and restore to a date where it WAS working. Hopefully, your restore point isn't too far back. You won't lose FILES, just any recent registry entries made due to installed applications or other. Anything you installed after the restore point, may not work, and just need reinstalled.

Yes explorer.exe and Vista. I tried launching explorer.exe from the task manager and it gives me that browseui.dll error message. I also tried restoring to a previous point but that didnt work. I did download that dll before I posted this trying to get it to work. I will give the scanreg command and see what it does. Thanks for the input.

It tells me scanreg isnt installed. I'm actually running tiny vista. I have a legit copy on my HP recovery drive put it runs terrible and tiny vista actually runs great. I wish Windows had a yum command like in redhat distros.

If all fails, look for a 3rd party shell... Many people make a replacement explorer, the desktop interface, that replaces the explorer shell... That would get you going at least...
If you need a file explorer, and launching explorer.exe won't even pop that up:

Shell replacement: http://emergedesktop.org/
Or, do a goggle search on "vista explorer shell replacement"
This is the crap you have to put up with, because M$ integrates too much into the O/S. That DLL error, is ONLY for the stupid < and > buttons, that go in iExplorer, but they integrated the browser into the desktop, and this is what we have to deal with. You cannot even run OE the desktop without Iexplorer... I tried it once, removed ALL the iExplorer components (with Win98), and the Desktop failed, as yours is, but without error. You could still bring up task manager and run apps...

I didnt even know they had different shells in Windows. I know there are in Linux. Huh I guess I learn something new everyday. I dont have to work today so I'm gonna mess around and figure it out.
