Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

Xubuntu is fine, the only hard part is where you have to enter the kboot bit to get past the bug.
You type
/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img root=/dev/sda1
and it installs and runs perfectly.
Plus xubuntu is for lower end, slower pc's (PS3) where YDL mite run slow on a PS3 ( might do, never tried it myself)

PS3 is a super computer...

But I doubt it will be as fast as YLD, since YLD was designed for the ps3. lol

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

Yea, but unfortunately YLD has no hardware support, making it slow and barely compatible with media. sad

Well its compatible with the wi-fi and ethernet port but I think thats about it. yikes

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

The programmes xubuntu comes with are a bit weird, and take about an hour to start up after pressing them numerous times.
Although its pretty good  when you stop and think 'wow im running this on a PS3'

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

The compability sucks, but its still more of a backup PC if you ever need to backup or download files.

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

Yeah, i like the way you can manage sd/duo/cf cards with xubuntu.
The way you have to boot it sucks though.
Going through the kboot every time, takes a good 10-15 minutes to start.

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

Do you think theres any way of allotting more than, say 10gigs to an other os?
For, say backing up psp iso's?

Not that I know off, I never really looked at how much space it has, but I have like 6 UMD backups from my psp games.

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

Im thinking of installing Xubuntu or YDL on my PS3 to download torrents. Which one would be the best for this purpose? Also when I have installed either OS can I set my gameOS to automatically start or does it have to go into Kboot every time? Say if I want to get rid of it, is it easy to uninstal? Thanks!

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

Ubuntu is a lot more user friendly, in my opinion, but on the other hand YDL has better overall performance, so its up to you. Also Ubuntu is a lot easy to install.

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

Ok. I have never tried installing linux on a ps3 before.. but i have many times installed ubuntu on pc and servers lol..

Ok my question is... Once you install ubuntu or xubuntu on PS3... does that mean once you turn on your ps3 it will Replace the standard cross media bar with ubuntu?? or you can run the seperate operating system by selecting it on your controller....

??? im scared..blush

Re: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Edubuntu onto a PlayStation 3

I think i just answered my own question here, for all you people that was wondering the same question....

Through Extensive reasearch.. I have found out that once you sucessfully installed the Linux Operating System in the PS3, Upon restart of the system (off, and On) the ps3 will boot into the KBoot Loader... waiting for your next command

If you Want to Start Linux - You must press "enter" at the KBoot screen
If you want to start back to the original ps3 system - at the Kboot screen type in "boot-game-os"

Lol.. I hope it helps, and boosts confidence towards the rookies and dont know what they are up to.

It will run the default that you set it to and the other can always be run as well by a reset. It would have been better to edit your first post rather than double post.

When you go back to the XMB go to settings->system settings->default OS and change it to PS3
