Torrent Program Causing freeze

the problem is when i start up my torrent program after booting up my computer it will cause the entire system to freeze. i do know how to get around this but it is very time consuming and annoying because i have to disconnect my internet connection and set it to only allow a few torrents to transfer data and set it at a very low rate then i can start my internet connection back up again and slowly allow more torrents to allow to transmit data and slowly increase the bandwidth for the data transfer. this is very annoying because if i let it transfer to much data to soon the system will freeze and i have to hard restart and start the whole process over. the thing is once i finish this process i can close the torrent program and reopen it and not have this problem as long as i do not restart the computer. it did not always act like this and ive tried using different torrent clients but it seems to do the same thing with all of them. ive also tried googling an answer but none of the answers seem to be of any help seeing as they are all usually for linux (im on windows 7)and all the answers seem to be oh never mind i figured it out with no explanation.

Re: Torrent Program Causing freeze

Well the program you are using probably hasn't been tested with Windows 7 yet. You never mentioned what torrent program you are using. I would suggest using uTorrent, if you are already using that, switch to another torrent application to see if you have the same issue.

Re: Torrent Program Causing freeze

If the whole PC freezes up, check your CPU percentage use when it happens.  Open a task manager, and monitor the percentage of CPU use by programs.  You can SORT by CPU use.   When the PC freezes up, the program causing it, IF a CPU hog, will appear at the TOP of the list.  I do this all the time to diagnose why my CPU fan just kicked in HIGH, and the PC slowed down tremendously.

Change clients, I see you did; I use uTorrent also.

Mine used to cause Internet freeze ups, and no traffic for periods of time.   I had Vonage (now ATT Callvantage), and the vonage book say to hook the adapter up right after the modem, then the router or PC into the adapter.  No no no, that caused a TONE of problems with internet traffic.  I removed the adapter, and just placed it on the router, was fine.  Now I have ATT, so did the same thing, but anabled QoS for that port, and it is 100% fine now.

Win7 is in Beta right?  If torrent clients are not working, is it not your duty to report that, as a Beta tester?

Re: Torrent Program Causing freeze

it was also doing it in windows vista but it hasnt really been giving me this much problem since win7 so i think that might be part of the issue of why i cant get it to stabalize.

but yea i originally started with uTorrent froze with that then moved to azures, same thing, and bit torrent now and same thing.

ill try checking the CPU percentage when it happens tonight when i get home from work and let you know the results.

Bittorent and µTorrent are the same thing now.  Or at one point bittorent was supposed to buy µTorrent and use it as their main client.

Re: Torrent Program Causing freeze

well after monitoring the CPU usage before the freeze it dosnt seem that the processor being overloaded is the cause of the freeze. just before the freeze the processor only showed that it was at roughly 10%. but after playing around with it and seeing what different methods cause the freeze it seems that when the bandwidth gets to high it causes the freeze.

Re: Torrent Program Causing freeze

High bandwidth on your internet connection should not peg the CPU like that.   What makes mine go up while on line, is that TrustedInstaller, for windows updates.  I know when my CPU is beign used, the fan increases speed as the percentage goes up.  Once it hits 100% for more than 10 seconds, it goes on HIGH...

I sort by CPU% tab, so when something does take CPU power, I can see what it is...
