I have quite a few 40GB 2.5" SATA-II's from PS3s and I thought I'd have a shot at putting it into a 360. Now, I know that Microsoft are evil and show a lot of signs of becoming the next Nazis, and as a result they decided to lock hard drives to the console hardware and use a system check on the hard drive to make sure it is a Microdoft installed one.
What I want to know is, has anybody seen anything that can help me cheat the system (so to speak) and install my own HDD inside the clip-on hard drive case that the Nazis....err, I mean Microsoft insist on using?
And for those about to suggest that I just go out and buy a 360 HDD that is bigger...no! I have several 40GB HDDs to use and I don't want to pay a crazy amount for what is considered a small hard drive, just because Microsoft made it.

You have to have the BEVS series drive. You won't get 40GB anyway, only 20, 60, or 120, and that's even if you can even obtain the HDDSS.BIN for from those drives. IF you want more information SEARCH, you ARE NOT going to use your 40GB, to get 40GB, in place of your 20, EVER.

That sucks... damn M$...

Each drive, 20, Now 60, and 120 have a security sector that identifies the drive. You need to obtain the SS.BIN from any one of those drives, to format a compatible drive.
All the 20GB HDDSS.BIN will be the same, and so on, they are all the same. So, if you get a 120Gb BEVs series drive, with the tool you need, you can use ANYONEs 120GB to extract the HDDSS.BIN (or look elsewhere on the NET) to make yours.
HDDSS.BIN for the 120GB is 3.5K, and IS out there at the right places...

BTW HDDs aren't locked to the console. That was the first XBOX.

Yea I knew that you could do it with certain WD drives but not the 40GB so just wanted to check.

No, you could use a BEVs series 40GB, but you're only going to get 20.
