Im trying to copy files back from my external hdd to my new hdd (750GB) Which, to who ever recommended it, works great. Thanks. Now back on topic. After my external hdd acting up like not always showing files being there and what not ive started to get the idea that it was dieing. Seems like all my hdds have been dieing lately. And im trying to copy the most important files over. My music and movies. And when im copying them ill get an error. Something like I/O device error.
"Cannot copy Kansas - Carry On My Wayward Son: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
It does this error for a couple files.
Then ill get another one somewhere down the line after not coping that file ill get this error
"Cannot copy Linkin Park - One Step Closer: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)."
Wtf is that?!
I tried doing a scan disk to fix errors and i guess it didnt do anything.
So after seeing this im pretty sure my hdd is dieing right?
So is there any thoughts on what i could or should do to fix this? Or save my files before its too late. I googled this and found alot of people have been having this problem with maxter drives. Dont know what i have but ill let you know later. Im sure that doesnt even matter.

Well, Cyclic Redundancy Check is a "CRC" error, it's just being spelled out for you. That means the checksum failed. CRD is an error correction code that is recorded in each sector of a disk and used to catch errors in the data itself. This is used to detect RANDOM (or accidental) changes in data, and not deliberate ones. A CRC failure means the data was altered by an error, be it physical damage to the sector (absence of data), or power surges; rather than you making the change.
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error: This happens for ALL kinds of reasons. I got a brand new 320GB drive, and while using U-torrent, I keep getting this error on a certain torrent, when there is nothing wrong with the drive, so I don't know why I get that error. I restart the torrent, it's fine for about 5 minutes, then I get it again, so THAT is strange. However, it is generally a hardware failure in the drive itself (take your pick), or any point in the logic circuits from the PC to the drive. It does also happen like if the drive power or voltage would fail during a write, or a bad spot found on the HDD during a write, but it is generally a hardware failure.
I replace my hard disks every THREE years, whether they need it or not. Unless I find a deal on one sooner, and it is a lager drive, I buy it. I got a 160GB last year, then got the 320 this year, it was CHEAPER than the 160 I bought last year; I had the money, so I got it. I replace my hard disks frequently enough, that the average person would think it's stupid...

I wouldnt dude. Thats probally what im gonna have to do too. You basically have to replace them every now and then because they arent gonna last long. The 2 hdd ive had lasted a while. About 4 - 3 years. Maybe thats long or not. Idk. But never gave me one error with those drives.

Usually, I go the warranty time then replace it. Seagate has a 5-year warranty on their drives, but they don't protect DATA, just the hardware. Most others are 3-years. So, yeah, you can get the drive replaced, but the data is gone, and who in our reasons for use, wants to pay hundreds to over a thousand dollars for data recovery? Not me... I back up all my DATA, not applications. The apps can be reinstalled, the data cannot.

Thats one of the first rules of becoming a technician.
Everything is worth nothing compared to data, peoples data is priceless.

Everything on my HDD can either be re downloaded or reinstalled. Theres nothing of importance that ill loose besides my time and bandwidth.

I've had a HDD for around 6 years and have no problems except when I had accidentally deleted a windows file causing corruption. Re-formatted it and was good as new.
Everything I could care about losing is my music and got it all on my iPod.

No. What i mean is could a virus on the storage device be affecting the performance of my windows. Cuz if you read it then you would see that i said when i turned off my external hdd windows ran faster and programs stopped crashing.
Btw i finally posted in the computer section...

lol ya you did
I misread what you posted again so my bad. You could have a virus on your external HDD affecting your OS. Have you tried running a virus scan on it?

Well. I recently reinstalled windows cuz i got a new hdd. 750Gb. Dont know if i mentioned that. But when i installed my cracked version of NOD32 which i have been using ever sense i downloaded it along time ago my internet connection would drop and the scans would never finish completly. Which i thought was odd. It could be because it was scanning my external HDD at the time but i unistalled NOD32 and the crack and everything worked great. But Windows still kept crashing. And it was till now when i figured out it was my external hdd. So idk. I scanned that drive before when i had my old hdds in. Everything on my computer has been going to hell recently. Its kinda weird.
