What type of wireless router to use with PS3?

I am trying to figure out a good wireless router to use with my PS3.  I want to make sure I get one that is compatible and one that does not cause any lag when playing games such as SOCOM.  I am also wanting one that is not really expensive because I am pretty broke at the moment.

- What is a good brand to purchase?
- What type does it need to be: g, b, n?
- If you know a specific router that works really well please let me know.

*I have comcast internet.

Thanks A Lot.

Wireless G is all PS3 supports, so basically, any cheap 39.99 wireless G router.

I would suggest Linksys, they have really good support for video game systems. I had a D-Link before, which worked, but It was difficult to set up.
Currently, I'm using the Linksys WRT54G which is a pretty good router for its cost. It runs about $70 stock price, but you can get it online for less.

I have the Linksys WRT54G as well and it's real good except for the MEDIA SERVER issue causing my internet to go down.

Linksys WRT54G is good
Sony America support also agrees that Linksys is best for PS3

Linksys is the best regardless. You may be broke at the moment, but buying a router is something in which you get what you pay for. Seriously, id recommend the Linksys WRT160N im thinking about upgrading mine.

Re: What type of wireless router to use with PS3?

He don't need a WRT150N broadband WiFi unless he has other wireless devices and adapters that are also "N".   Any G54 will work with PS3...  I have used Belkin, LinkSys, and NetGear, and all have worked  for me as plug-n-play.  I never have NAT and other problems. I plug the PS3 into the router, and I am good to go, I didn't need to set up anything.   Wireless router connection well, you only need to set up your WEP key, and SSID; then put that all in the PS3 for connecting.

You can use the 20/60GB models as a WiFi access point, if it is WIRED to the router.

Most routers have a GAME setting in them to, just turn it on...

First off, its a WRT160N

Second of all, i did say, LINKSYS are the way to go (meaning any router).

Third, if you look, the WRT160N it supports B,G & N. I recommended that router because if he buys a shitty belkin, you know for a fact he'll be coming back here moaning that his internet goes off when he uses his ps3.

But why buy a router that supports Wireless N if you're going to have to use G.  The N standard hasn't been finalized and may never get finalized if something better does it first.  So a Wireless N router isn't the best idea...

That's what I basically said; he's gonna make the dude spend MORE on what he doesn't need...  I also hit the 5 instead of a 6 for the model number.

I also wonder where BELKIN came from...  I didn't mention it.

Re: What type of wireless router to use with PS3?

I have the netgear wireless g router, it has worked perfectly for me till recently, it has started to go out on me, i have had it for about 3 years now or so, but my main pc is wireless and uses a heavy amount of bandwidth almost 24/7 (about 50gb a week) and that has taken its tole on the router over time.

Re: What type of wireless router to use with PS3?

Yeah, I have gone through two routers.  They work for a while, then need reset, then they work for another good while.  It was getting to be a weekly reset thing, so I got another one.   Luckily, I have not had to BUY one for 5 years, they are always given to me from someone else.  I have one good spare router now...   I use a wireless access point instead of a router w/wireless in it, and a range expander.

I just got two of these commercial grade Spectrum24 wireless access points.  They have these 10" antennas that are 1" in diameter, and  are 1000 foot range access points, about 308 yards....  They were in a store that was closing; I got ALL KINDS of goodies...  They are only 2MBit A/Ps, but still faster than dial-up....

Round my area, the WRT54GSUK have been discontinued and stores are not re-ordering more stock (ive looked around). So the only other option was to buy shitty belkin or Linksys WRT160N and after installing a few of these and testing them, they are really good routers.

I know of plenty of places that have moved from G to N networking, he may only need G for his PS3 but whats wrong with future proofing for his other devices?

I'm not making him spend anything, I'm just advising him. I have plenty of networking experience and was just advising him on Linksys.

If im not mistaken, Belkin was setup in California, does that help?

Yeah, I'm experiencing this aswell. Router restarts sometimes when you run the tests on the connection (which I find really really weird).

Which version of the router do you have? I'm sitting on 7 (and latest firmware doesnt help much). I actually not tried to disable the Media Server yet, but I'll guess I'll have to try it asap. Except for that I haven't had any real problems and often recommends this router to people.
