HDD problems?

Me and my friend just finnished building him a new computer. He got a 7200 RPM 750GB hdd. When we first turned it on the HDD after a while starting making strange noises. Kinda like a clicking noise. We thought it was cuz maybe it was trying to find something to load to like an OS or something. A bit later we started installing windows and it got 75% of the way through install and then started to say cannot read from disc or having problems installing file. Retry or skip? So he hit skip and it kept asking that for each file. Then he said the HDD wasnt even detected anymore so i told him to unplug the sata and power cable and plug it back in. Well now it stops at 0% on format. So he turned the computer off and tried to do a quick format. It jumped to 20% and then it froze. I asked him to check the disc and he said it wasnt scratched up bad or anything. But i doubt a scratched disc would have the HDD not be detected that one time. What could the problem be? A bad HDD? Bad CD? Im gonna go over to his house tomorow with a blank sata drive i had and my XP CD to try and install on that but this is a brand new HDD. It shouldnt be bad.

Im txting him right now and he says its constantly making a loud clicking noise. I heard it too when i was at his house. It didnt sound normal. It kinda sounds like it skipping back and forth. Like it will spin one way then sundennly spin a diff way then sound like its stuck and make a click noise.

Heres what it sounds like: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LZBH2606

Re: HDD problems?

Any clicking off a hard drive normally says "this HDD is F**Ked get a new one". If it's brand new and you have proof of purchase get it replaced.

Re: HDD problems?

Thats what i told my friend. Hes not too smart with computers i was the one who put it together and i had to leave so he trying to install windows by himself and i told him the HDD might be bad and he said its brand new it cant be bad. So maybe tomorow when i install it on my sata HDD if that hasnt gone bad then he will believe me. Its just strange how that was like that.

Lol yeah. But the 360 was made by microsoft. I dont think microsoft made that HDD. If they did then id expect it to break.

@blimpie92

Try and get a hold of a program called "Easy Recovery Pro.", I've done a good share of hdd recovery and you'd be amazed what it's capable of doing...
