Aside from linux that is~

I know that you can't install Windows (unless i'm wrong)

Oh yeah and there are a lot of linux out there and
i've never tried any of 'em. Which version should i get
that you would recommend for say......... newbie?
(or bah! screw it, just tell me the best)

someone recently managed to install windows vista onto a ps3 but it was really slow and it took 30 mins to install, i read it on www.qj.net.com somewhere.

YDL is most compatible and stable for PS3

windows can be added to PS3 with emulation through linux but too damned slow to be useful (like Windows 95 and XP on PSP)

DO you mean install OTHER than Linux, or install to run in linux?

There is nothing else to install EXCEPT Linux, but are a lot of things to install once linux IS installed.

Stuff:

yeah, i heard about linux as well.
It's just that...... i've never used linux all my life though.
(I'm assuming it's easy to learn?)

hmmmm.......
because in the PS3 option, there's that 'Install other OS' option.
So my eyebrow twitched and got me thinking................
MAC OS? VISTA OS? Linux OS?

Oh and also, where can i get the best guide for installing the type of linux i want on the PS3?

I was reading that introduction on Linux on PS3;
and i got to this part;

Preparing the PS3

To install Linux, you need several pieces of additional hardware:

* A display and appropriate cabling
* A USB keyboard
* A USB mouse
* A USB flash drive

I just want to ask.
For mouse/keyboard, will that logitech keyboard for the ps3 work?
As for the display and appropriate cabling, i've got HDMI plugged into my 32 HD ready TV
USB flash drive..... umm..... can i use my 2.5' portable external HDD with casing?

I got a Logitech wireless get-up, and it works, but only within like 6 feet of the PS3. The range sucks... USB corded ones should work ok... Most keyboards and mice will work... Not sure on the portable HDD, they're s little different than just a flash drive, communication wise; but, you can always try.

What are you using Powerslave?
I'll just go with that~

I just don't want to random pick the version and ended up not being able

never thought about mobile versions of Windows but you still have limited hardware access. YDL is the best for PS3 because it's made specifically for PS3

I do not have Linux installed, nor do I use it, except for making upgraded softmod drives for XB1. You can run TinyXP on Linux, it's faster than a full XP install...

Basically man, there's nothing REALLY worth putting on there for linux either. Nothing cool runs under linux for PS3. You can't use inputs for using it as a DVR. You do not have access to the boot/game partition from linux either.

As anyone who has linux on their PS3, just what are they doing with it? 75% should say "Nothing really..." The others are just doing it to LEARN it? Without RSX access, you can't make anything dazzling.

(it's much better then the ps3 internet interface i guess)

or what about running .exe stuff?
(Like i have a lot of emulators; snes, nes and such?)
(or can it run word documents?)

As it stands, i use my pc or laptop to do what i need, including reading this site.

The only thing i use my ps3 for is playing games.

If Linux was to run dazzling on the ps3. Yes i would install it, but there's not many of my pc games that i play support Linux so it would be just to take a look around, and use it now and again when being bored.

ok the thing is this.

I'm going to be running a project (for work) in linux.
So i would definitely need to install this on my ps3~
(I dont mind installing it on my PC, just that i will probably need my PC
and just use my PS3 for work purpose at the same time)

Can you recommend me a good Linux Powerslave?
or anyone that has good experience with Linux?
Please note that i am a COMPLETE NOOB with Linux!

i reccomend YDL 6.0 personally it is backed by sony and i installed linux on my ps3 and totally hated as you cant do much with it just a few applications and internet id rather use my pc which is much faster lol so then i uninstalled it, simple!.

lol well its ok for someone who likes linux and wants to turn there ps3 into a slow pc with many restrictions then yeah and i was reccomending it because its what i think is the best linux even if i loved or hated it lol.
