it was prolly just a publicity thing! oh wow, ps3 isnt JUST a game console it allows a linux installation! cuz when they first released it sony really was pushing that it wasnt JUST a game console, although i think they've given up on that....

That's because they're the SAME security systems... As I stated in another post; proof that the information on both HD-DVD and BR-D are the same, only the format is different, and the hardware is passes through.
0m1kr0n; The reason people want access to the RSX through linux is for emulators, mainly PS1 and PS2 for playing backups. From what I read, the proper PPC linux gives you access to all six SPEs. It's learning how to use all six, like the DEVs are; but, without hardware acceleration in GPU, then you have no real reason to try and make emulators, or other nice programs for Linux. Makes you wonder why they even allow linux to be installed, when you are limited with graphics. I mean, what are people REALLY doing with Linux on the PS3 that's orth writing home about? Unless SOny plans on dropping a bomb to open something up later, there's no real use for it...
The BR crypto is removed in a hardware buffer. It'd have to be, or why put a IC dedicated to BR decryption right on the BUS between the drive and bridge?
Also I know what you mean about Linux on the PS3. I don't even bother booting otherOS anymore; it's kind of boring. I might use it for some brute forcing stuff, but that's about it. I'd probably sale mine with all accessories if I could get some of my money back out of it.

You talking MOVIE players only, or the PS3?
The PS3 uses the same security as players do for movie playback, but with ADDED featured for their games. THere is the AACS, BD+, and the Rom-Mark. Rumor has it they still use all three in the GAME discs, but with the additional signed code deal for games, and security sectors on the disc.

I'm referring to the PS3. I forget what the BR board IC removes, but it decrypts a packet/protocol bit stream before it reaches the bridge.

Sony's claim that it's a PC is a little absurd, and they do claim that. Well, with a PC, you have full access to your hardware, PS3; yo do not. I don't know how they expect people to use it as a PC when you can't do anything spectacular with it. Linux isn't all it's cracked up to be without full support from the hardware, like on XB1.
I have a feeling that a version of Linux is going to come out that allows better and full SPE management, and other sorts of goodies to make it worth your while. If not? Sony crows for no reason...

The only three things I found otherOS useful for is brute forcing keys, using gimp(which sucks compared to PS CS3,) and running intranet servers. The PS3 wouldn't even have significant WAN HTTP traffic because of the RAM shortage.
Also GTA IV is officially coming to PC, as is The Sims 3, so that basically leaves a lot of linear games exclusive to console. I'm glad I bought a LCD that has HDMI AND DVI, so I can go back to PC. If they just had a DVI+HDMI 4 port KVM switch.
