I have always liked AMD product. While true, one time they were beating out intel, Intel has really stepped up. I remember when AMD had the fastest CPU on the planet. It was a 750Mhz overclocked to 1+Ghz, in an Air Conditioned case... So, that's how LONG ago that was... With Intel's Quad Core CPUs, only NOW is AMD coming up with theirs.
HOWEVER, they are going to step WAY up with that GPU, if it works out...
it wasnt 750mhz, the winning cpu for amd was the fx series which was clocked from 2.6-3.0mhz and it dominated the market for 2-3 yrs, untill intel released their core2duo and core2quad cpus. me im a die hard amd fan, but for the time being i would suggest a core2extreme maybe clocked around 2.66 then overclock with air condtioned case.

Core2Extreme are expensive. a simple 3.0ghz core2dou will get you through for maybe 1 - 2years. And when you said 2.6-3.0mhz are you sure you dont mean ghz?

NO, many years ago, before all this NEW stuff, there was an AMP CPU, it was a SLOT-A, that was overclocked to over 1Ghz, and was a 750Mhz CPU. IT was placed in a A/Condition case to keep it cool at 1.2Ghz or so. I remember the article said, FASTEST CPU ON THE PLANET. This was BEFORE any 1GHZ CPU ever game out by anyone, so it was true for about 3 months. I am not talking about ANY NEW one, like FX and so on, you aren't paying attention to what I was typing... I said MANY YEARS ago, not two, when core2duo came out, I would have said that. Core2duo came out when? Few years ago? So MANY and FEW are the same to you? No, I am talking WAY before July of 2006, when the C2D E6300 was SAID to be released. I said, like MANY YEARS AGO, not two years ago...
Not only that, AMD had a dual core out before the intel "Core" series (see below) and C2D, the intel C2D was quoted to only mark the END of AMDs dominance in the dual core CPU market, that was only TWO YEARS ago... The Athlon 64 X2 was the first dual-core desktop CPU manufactured by AMD. It is essentially a processor consisting of two Athlon 64 cores joined together on one die with additional control logic. In June 2007, AMD released low-voltage variants of their low-end 65 nm Athlon 64 X2, named "Athlon X2".
History: AMD reached another important milestone in leading the industry toward pervasive 64-bit computing by being the first in the industry to demonstrate an x86 dual-core processor for 32- and 64-bit computing on August 31, 2004. The Dual-core AMD Opteron™ processors for servers and workstations were launched in mid-2005 followed by dual-core processors for the client market in late 2005. AMD had the dual core before INTEL. Core2Duo was to upstage AMD by INTEL, so AMD will eventually follow suit and beat intel in the next few years...
So you know; the Intel Core brand was launched on January 5, 2006 by the release of the 32-bit Yonah core CPU. In 2007, Intel began "branding" the Yonah core CPUs as Pentium Dual-Core CPU which was intended for lower-end mobile only computers, unlike the 64-bit Core microarchitecture CPUs branded as Intel Core2Duo (for higher-end computers) and also as Pentium Dual-Core (for lower-end desktops only). In short, the Core brand refers to processors with the "mobile" derivative of 32-bit Intel P6 microarchitecture (preceding the Core microarchitecture), whereas the Intel Core 2 Duo brand refers to CPUs with the 64-bit Core microarchitecture. So, you see, they were almost a year late in getting theirs out...
Can't argue with history....

as i don`t no what part of the world you come from, i can only give you the price in the uk.
( recommended) (i think this is a bargain, you wont need to upgrade again for at least two/three years unless your a games player like myself).
always make sure you have the right power supply in your computer, ask at the shop if you are not sure, they will put you in the right direction.
always ask at the shop if your board is ATI CROSSFIRE or NVIDIA SLI compatible. your video card will run better if you can match it to your board.
cheap bundle

Asustek S775 Intel P35 PCI-E ATX. £86.28 this board will take any of the CPU`s below
Core 2 Duo
Core 2 Extreme
Core 2 Quad
Pentium 4
Pentium D
Pentium Extreme Edition.

Celeron 400 sequence
Core 2 Duo
Core 2 Extreme
Core 2 Quad
Pentium 4
Pentium 4 Extreme Edition

Pentium Dual Core
Pentium Extreme Edition.
all the boards above are vista/vista 64 ready. you can only use vista 64 if your CPU is 64bit.
all boards are PCI-E slots now 4x-8x-16x. its hard to find AGP anymore. you might have to buy a new video card,(PCI-EXPRESS) don`t worry too much they quite cheap.

Wow thank you. I'lll have to check this stuff out. I honestly don't care if I have an Intel or an AMD processor as long as it's realativly fast and works nicely. I would prefer NVIDIA video cards. I have one now but its a real old GEFORCE 4 something-half-assed series or something. No vista drivers. I want a 64bit processor. Does antone know if Intel or AMD make better 64bit processors than the other? I don't need to overclock them, I don't need to play games and I really don't need liquid cooling (enohand) I want an everyday computer that's fast enough that I can multitask with ease. (BTW I'm in US)

Just installed my AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000. Dual core 3.0Ghz. I can already tell a difference. Next im gonna get a 10000RPM HDD. Any on here want to sell me one ill buy it. Im looking for one over 30gb tho. Because whats the point of having a fast CPU if your HDD cant keep up.
Offline
hd speed is only loading times it has no other affect on cpu, like how fast it loads a level or a game.
Offline
Yeah loading times exactly. If i buy a high end processor and it has slow loading times your not gonna be able to tell how fast your computer really is. Besides my hdd are REALLY old too. I have a 40 (OS installed on) from back when 40gb is now the 1tb. And an 80gb and 320gb external.

it looks like its been soldered to it tho.
