80gb no doubt - bigger HDD & i think 40gb only has 2 USB ports 80gb has 4 plau no PS2 backwards capability in 40gb

bc-=backward compatability
60gb=95% ps2 compatible
80gb=60% compatible

wow  that's the most confusing sentence ever.  The 40GB only has 2 usb ports so if you want to play rock band you have to buy one of those things like the xbox has to do.  You also might have trouble if say you had an external HDD and you were charging a controller you are now out of USB ports.  Wanna play guitar hero? unplug something there and later when you need that switch 'em up again.  I think four isn't enough but that as many as you can get.

I could use 16 USB ports. I got all 4 full on my ps3, one of them leads to a self powered usb hub with 4 ports that are all full too. I would go for the 80 for a lot of reasons:
1 - you get MGS4 and a dual shock with it $120 value already makes it $20 cheaper than the 40gig
2 - you get 40 extra gigs, my 60 gig is full of game data, psn bought games, and 2 demos. No movies or music at all. I just had to delete Ninja Gaiden Data (about 4.5 gigs) so i have room for all the MGS4 data i have started to get. Oblivion data is getting axed soon too, which makes me sad.
3 - backwards compatibility, you can pick up ps2 games for like $2.99 used sometimes. THPS Underground 2 is still the best skate game ever, atari looking or not.
4 - USB ports
5 - Card reader - it comes in handy
When the 60gigs were $100 cheaper i thought (and still think) they were the best choice, but the 40 lacks way to much.
