Looking at getting a 7.1 Surround sound setup. Any good brands?

I don't want to spend too much. My budget is $1300 for the lounge room. I'm over my satellite speakers and want floor speakers. I heard Sony speakers aren't that good for sound. But it would match my Sony Bravia and ps3.

They're all good, all made in either Taiwan or Japan, so what's the difference?

There was an 800.00 7.1 on Dealsucker.com yesterday.

Just go to Best Buy or or other, and they have Sony, Yamaha, and Pioneer units, to 599.99

well my satellite speakers only pump out a mere 60 watts which is expected of course. I want speakers that can produce at least 120 watts 8 ohms. So after many hours research i came to the conclusion of getting 5 Bose Series IV Jewel Double Cube Speakers for about $750 a pop. No sub included but may get one later. I'll buy additional speakers later if i have to.

I just bought a Sony STR-DG720 for 299.99.  Three HDMI inputs, very nice...  Has everything I needed.

By the way, NO ONE is using 7.1 right now, just 6.1, they plan on 7.1 later this year I read.

Probably more than what you need, but at that price (refurb) you can't go wrong

Re: Looking at getting a 7.1 Surround sound setup. Any good brands?

I spent $259.99 on a set of Logitech Z-5500 and i have to say they are absolutely amazing. No amp needed. I have them hooked up to my pc and ps3. They go more than loud enough for movies and games and sound as good as a $1000 set up. THX and Dolby Digital certified. Not the best for music though. I almost bought a $800 amp last Christmas but grabbed these instead, and smile about it every day. They are only 5.1, but 7.1 right now is just splitting the rear channels so it is no difference at all. Until they start making games and movies for 7.1 it will be a waste.

Re: Looking at getting a 7.1 Surround sound setup. Any good brands?

My main (Front left and right) are Dynalab SDA 2.8, great speakers, better than 10 years old. The rest are like RCA, but I got a nice Center, a longer one than I originally had.

The Dynalabs were 1200.00 when I got them for 240.00 off the back of a truck...

Floor-standing 2-way Tower Speaker, Dual 8" Woofers Utilizing a 4th Order Butterworth Ported Design - 15 Watts RMS Amp Power, 200 Watts Music Power, 8 ohms, 91B 1W/1M, 100dB, 39Hz-22,000Hz (+-3dB), 12/6 dB per octave, 4,000 Hz crossover, Woofers utilize a "High Modulus" Bi-Lamented Cone Butyl Rubber Surrounds, 1 1/2" Diameter High-temp Voice Coil, 24 oz. High Strength Ceramic Magnet, 13mm Titanium Coated Dome Computer Optimized & Matched Phase Dispersion Ring Tweeters, in a wood black veneered finished ported cabinet.

When the bass hits on these babies, you can FEEL the wind coming from the ports!   Back when I got these, they were state of the art, and you would not know how old they are by looking at them, or FEELING them....
