PS3 INFORMATION, ISO LOADER, HACKS & EXPLOITS - UPDATED 06/03/2008
As of 03/18/2008 - There is no ISO Loader, any links to one are fake, and video is fake.
As of 9/13/2007 - All Paradox & Ferrox info in this post was deleted (See Wiki Links for that).
As of 6/3/08; The PS3 has not been hacked at all!

There is NO HOMEBREW!
There is NO WAY TO PLAY PS3 BACKUPS!
A PS1 Eboot(etc) downloaded, or from elsewhere; able to play on PSP, will not transfer over to the PS3 to play.
You cannot play backups of PS1 or PS2 games by just putting in a backup!
Can your PS3 do this, or do that? Read the USER MANUAL! All it's capabilities and connectivity options ARE IN IT!
It is virtually impossible to "brick" your PS3, unless YOU or the thing you are experimenting with, happens to write to your NAND FLASH! Other than that, you can temporarily mess it all up, but the worst thing you would have to do, is set it all up again.
ISO Loading cannot be done with external drives because of the 4GiB -1byte file size limit under the FAT32 file system, and currently 2GiB under Linux without LFS. NTFS is not supported with PS3, which would support a file size of 2TB.
Linux with LFS; or LSF patch (very hard with 32bit Linux) would be needed for 16GiB + File Sizes on a Linux partition:
ext2/ext3 with 1 KiB blocksize 16448 MiB = About 16GiB (Maybe One ISO Image)
ext2/ext3 with 2 KiB blocksize 256 GiB.
So, due to the external FS restrictions; any ISO LOADER video shown, that claims to run the ISO from an externall HDD, is going to be fake. The best to hope for now is HDD Loading, or running backups.

What is an ISO LOADER?
An ISO loader allows you to store games in ISO (one big file) format to be loaded/navigated -via- software, to run on the PS3 (and some other game consoles). These ISO files are stored on a hard disk, preferably External, and very large. However, with the 4GB file size limit for Fat32, no one is storing an ISO Image of a BR-D game.
Two people were working on an ISO loader for PS3, Paradox, and Ferrox. Ferrox is no more.
If someone tells you they have a working ISO loader for PS3 games, they are lying. An ISO loader would work for some PS2, and all PS1 games.

LibMPEG Exploit Information:
http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=54548
Summary:
Very simply I had a .h264 encoded video file, and encapsulated it through VLC with M2TS, and transferred it to the PS3; it claims the file is "Corrupted Data". When selected the PS3 prompts the screen with "The data is corrupted."
Here's the good part, that same file, when selected after entering a game (any game), will produce a completely black screen, no info, no beep, no nothing and the controller circle and other buttons won't work. (PS button works, but when the system is turned off it sounds like its yelling @ you (the
beeps))
-hacked2123
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Usage (tested on v1.10):
To use this, put the included "libmpeg.mpg" file in a /VIDEO folder of your Jumpdrive or similar storage device.
Turn on the PS3, then go to Video, select your Jumpdrive, and select the "Unsupported Data" file and launch it by pressing X.
If your PS3 is Firmware v1.10 or less (we tested v1.31+, and it appears plugged/fixed in them) then you should receive a BLACK SCREEN... and if your Jumpdrive has a light it may also go out.
Next, power off your PS3 by pressing and holding the button. You will receive a series of green LED blinks (about 25 total) and around blink #19 you will also receive a series of audio BEEPS as well. Finally, your unit will shutdown to a red LED and upon powering back on all will be back to normal.
Usage (tested on V1.11):
To use this, put the included "libmpeg.mpg" file in a /VIDEO folder of your Jumpdrive or similar storage device.
Plug this device into your PS3 and load either a PS1, PS2, PS3, or Bluray disk or a demo and then exit using the PS button.
Upon returning, go to Video, select your Jumpdrive, and select the "Unsupported Data" file and launch it by pressing X.
If your PS3 is Firmware v1.11 or less (we tested v1.31+, and it appears plugged/fixed in them) then you should receive a BLACK SCREEN... and if your Jumpdrive has a light it may also go out.

The next step will be sorting how to inject code using this method, followed by lovely PS3 homebrew and iSO Loaders of course!

Hoax: -------PLAY PS1 PS2 ISO ON YOUR PS3--------
It is supposed to work for 4GB files and under.
This was posted by Gurduk, but there seems to be no truth to it:
Well apparently with the luck of linux there seems to be a command flying around in which you burn your backed up ISO to a DVD, pop it into linux and run this command:
CODE
mount -t iso9660 -o loop,user game.iso /mnt/sr0
Apparently from there linux is suppose to crash and you will be returned back to XMB where you are now able to click the ISO.
You need linux and a backed up game which is under 4gb
Remember, if it were as easy as that, there would be no need for anyone to produce an ISO LOADER.
You can't "mount" an ISO IMAGE on the PS3, period. The XMB is not designed to load or mount an ISO image. Downloaded games from the Sony Store are executables, written and signed for the XMB to launch.

Ferrox v1.0 PS3 ISO Loader: Latest News.
We have decided testing is over with. There are some unfixable glitches in the loader but nothing we can do. Loader will be released May 11, 2007 at 12:00PM PST. That means u guys probably won't get it till the 12th. We will be releasing distribution rights to limited websites. Not that this is legal anyway and we can do that. But, We hope after so much hard work for you to benefit you will at least appreciate our software.
Ferrox.
PST is PACIFIC time, doesn't matter what time zone you are in, if they say PST then it would be 12 NOON on May 11th, PST USA time.
FERROX SITE USERS:
Users Ferrox and Ferr0x who have posted here have two completely different IP, and EMAIL addresses.
Ferrox's EMAIL is based out of: http://www.kashan.com/ - Formulate your own opinion there, and Time zone is: -07 MST. Other users who have posted under that IP address are: DjMaSSaCrEzZ, so this one is TOTALLY fake.
Ferr0x is using a Gmail address, Time zone of: -06 CST. Other users who have posted under that IP address: None listed. I would guess it is fake as well.
HOW FERROX STARTED:
UPS accidentally drops PS3 DEV KIT at house?
It's a little hard to believe that UPS accidentally sent a few thousand dollar development console to the wrong person and this person just happens to know how to code and hack Sony hardware. I mean there would be tracking numbers and records showing where it got dropped off. Even if this did happen (which it clearly didn't) Sony would be on the trail, and would of gotten it all back. One more reason why this rumor should stay a rumor.
Rumor: the creator of the Ferrox loader is working for/with Sony, has signed an NDA, and also released all her information on how the loader works to Sony. And Ferrox is never going to be released to the public.
Xecuter (relatively reliable) has already confirmed the working ISO loader of Paradox. Even if this loader is fake (which is most likely the case) there is going to be a loader for the PS3, eventually.

Insert "Resistance: Fall of Man, then pause during the game.
Eject RFoM, and replace the game by another game that required the FW update (wait few seconds).
Select "Quit and Save", the system will boot the other game avoiding the update firmware control.

PS3 Swap Switch Trick - Play PS2 Backups
Pizzag @ forums.afterdawn.com wrote:
OK, I wanted a fairly easy way to play my PS2 backups on my PS3. I have read that you can do it by taking apart your PS3 and cutting a hole in the top and yadayada. Leaving the top off of my PS3 to play PS2 backups didn't sound attractive to me. So i searched around and found a forum for PS2 talking about a tray switch for the fat PS2's back in the day. So i did some brainstorming and figured it might work. I went to Radio shack and purchased a 3 way toggle switch for $5. I highly recommend 3 way. At radio shack it was called a middle off switch. That way your drive motor is not constantly running. I came home and soldered the wires to the switch.
A note before we start. This is a fairly easy process, the most trouble i had was trying to figure out where to put the switch. there is no room to work with. I ended up taking out my card reader on my PS3 because i never use it and just mounted the switch there. You could possibly let it hang out. It's up to you. Just remember that if you plan to retain original functionality as far as the drive sensor and automatic load/unload motor, you will need 2 additional small on/off switches.
This is better than cutting the top of the PS3 to perform the swap trick. By installing the switch, you achieve the same goal, without hacking your PS3 to pieces.

"INFECTUS" DOWNGRADE PS3! - rev. 1.0 - 05/16/07
Main Page: http://www.infectus.biz/index.php
This device will allow a downgrade of a V1.6 to V1.5 using the Infectus device.
Features:
* PS3 NAND FLASHER, allow to read and write nand flash of PS3.
* Every BIOS is signed for every consoles, so is not possible to use a BIOS from a different PS3 in another.
* Right now is possible to backup the firmware and restore it in the same console, good for BIOS backup, to update and downgrade the firmware of the console.
* PS3 NAND FLASHER allow the developer to study and analyze the PS3 BIOS in a easy way.
Summary:
Once you have got everything (software downloaded & hardware) turn your console ON, connect Infectus to the USB port and start the software on the PC.
To allow infectus to have control of the NAND FLASH, the PS3 must be turned on (of course). You then need to wait for the browser screen, after you can connect the USB cable of INFECTUS to PC. Is very important that you don't touch nothing in the browser suring the INFECTUS read and write tothe PS3s' NANDs FLASH, because is possible for corruption of data.
Follow the instructions at the site linked. They suggest you first dump the NAND FLASH, twice (two different file names), and then compare those 2 files to be sure they are correct. This assures no data corruption or loss, and that the link is reliable.

Booting BR-D Backups on XMB on PS3 - But they do not RUN:
Just over 24 hours after the PS3 $DK leak, resident Dev'er hacked2123 shared with us in iRC EFnet #PS3News a video, which shows confirmation of the World's first public PS3 XMB Hole (vulnerability) found!! There are MANY details to report, so please bear with us while we address each throughout the night. For starters, this specific PS3 XMB Hole is currently present in PS3 v1.00-1.11 Firmware. Jumping ahead briefly... it's now believed the reason why the GODS @ Paradox hinted that v1.60+ Firmware was NOT recommended to update to was simply because there is no OtherOS installer present. Also, at this time it's important to NOTE that PS3 Blu-ray Disc back-ups will boot but not run just yet. We will cover all of the details on how this is accomplished shortly... until then, you can watch the video.
Update: Here is a brief update for the time being: For starters, as mentioned in our Past News we were going to examine the CELLFTP.self (which allows you to dump the PS3 side of the HDD). Unfortunately through experimenting, no open ports were found after a portscan. As a result, it would only return to the XMB without error... so for now we're passing on this avenue.
Next up, we would like to clarify a few things about the Site News topic as follows: The reason the TITLE is "PS3 XMB Hole found; Blu-ray Back-Ups Bootable!!!" is because the originating media in hacked2123's video was a Blu-ray Disc. As the game he chose happened to fit on a standard DVD-R, he opted to burn it to one (in this case) instead of using a Blu-ray Disc Recordable... which is logical as it saves money too. Not all PS3 games will fit onto a DVD-R, so it's important to NOTE that some will require a BD-R using this 'XMB Hole' Method.
Finally, the way this specific PS3 XMB Hole works is that the OtherOS Installer does not verify the SELF it runs, and can run any properly-signed SELF file. Currently, hacked2123 is using a SELF (HDD Formatter) from the recent $DK leak- this wipes the HDD and as a result, puts the PS3 into a 'special' Mode... which in turn authenticates the disc. It will BOOT the PS3 Blu-ray Back-Up (in this case on a DVD-R) fine, however, as stated previously it will not RUN the game... possibly because hacked2123 only tried with a DVD-R versus an actual Blu-ray Disc Recordable (which is the proper media for the PS3's blue laser).
The steps involved were as follows:
1) Make a directory or use your Memory Card- for example: D:PS3OTHEROS
2) Copy the OtherOS.self (Mkfs.self via $DK renamed) to D:PS3OTHEROSotheros.self
3) Put it in your PS3 and navigate to "Install OtherOS" along with confirming your selection by pressing "OK"
4) The PS3 screen will go black, and it will erase the entire HDD (there will likely be a way around this, we're only using the HDD Formatter SELF at this time)
5) When it's complete (your PS3 may reboot, don't worry) place an ORIGINAL PS3 game disc in
6) Eject the disc, and place in another ORIGINAL PS3 game disc
7) Eject once more, and place your LEGAL BACK-UP PS3 game disc in the drive
8) Give it a few seconds to read the disc, and it will appear in the XMB
9) Finally, press X and that's it... it will BOOT up but not RUN the PS3 game back-up
Be sure to check back for updates, as this process is likely to change/improve heavily over the next few days.

[source: StrontiumDog @ ps3news.com]
I have released a dump of the PlayStation 3 Graphic Libraries for the RSX Hardware in the PS3. These are not machine readable, they are human readable. They are being released because there is a wealth of information in there, and hacking NVidia GPU's is a specialist field. Hopefully the appropriate experts can take these files and provide necessary information to allow full RSX access from under linux. I am quite confident this is possible from my cursory scan of this data and the functions that exist in the PS3 Hypervisor. (Especially the undocumented RSX Register access functions). In any event I will continue to work on this area. Note, these files are from code that runs UNDER GameOS. Linux does not run under GameOS, it runs directly under the Hypervisor, so there are no Hypervisor calls in this data. The data certainly reveals the structure of critical memory structures, register layout, etc.
The files are or may be available -via- iRC EFNet #PS3News - but be warned, Sony is taking notice to what is going on; http://www.ps3-hacks.com/forums/viewtop … 630#p20630

There are reports flying around about a PS3 modchip from GRMODS, and there isn't one.
This claim:
YES ladies and gentlemen,
we can confirm backup loading on PS3
First in the world
our team has managed to make the first working iso's for the PS3
and beat gods of hacking paradox,
testing their iso's which ended up in complete failure...
a kind of modchip is needed for the isos to load,
and certainly not the iso loader which is fake,
as the isos that have been released by the teams, which are rumored to release an exploit, DO NOT work...
The difference lies in a file SND0.AT3 which is missing from their isos,
and might be responsible for the fact that PDx's isos don't work
Our team is checking the differences between the working and non-working isos,
for this reason we need a program called brdgen
which can open the isos that have been released
Then we need to open the PS3_GAME folder and check whether the SND0.AT3 file exists or not...
If someone has more knowledge and can help,
he can send as a pm and enter the team that will hack the PS3 first in the world!
Again with the ISO LOADER - No mention of the breaking of the 4GB barrier, and how, which HAS to be done.
If in fact, there is a MODCHIP, it would have to have the ability to read NTFS formats. This is not a problem when using a modchip, it would be coded into the BIOS the chip uses. However, right now no site (or GSMODS) shows such a modchip at this point in time.
There is semi-proof a backup LOADS right now, it just doesn't run.

The Dimmujed Exploit - June 13th, 1007 - Is another confirmed FAKE, but this is the claim:
Dimmujed wrote:
Method (we assume all is NTSC for now, no idea if PAL works too) :
- Launch "Metal Gear Solid VR Missions" (PS1 game) in the PS3 (fw<=1.51)
- Play and unlock the ability to put in your own images in "extra" menu
- Put in an invalid image
- That creates a buffer overflow
- Manage to take the hand in your own code hidden in the image
- Then do whatever you want (if it's legal and you have knowledge for that)
Edit:
- "Metal Gear Solid VR Missions" NTSC, works alone. Extra menu reachable.
- "Metal Gear Solid Special Missions" PAL requires "Metal Gear Solid" disc.
I'm still seeking free RSX access, so in case the hypervisor blocks the way, I will just blow it up.
Sony had enough time to think if they want to lower hackers pressure and give us a RSX driver.
We will know soon if the buffer overflow can be reproduced, for sure.
Most of the information has vanished since then.

Possible PS3 TIFF EXPLOIT Found (FW 1.9)
Note: You Can't Play Backups With This Exploit, NONE, Nein, Zilch, Nada...
Thanks to Team PS3HAX, and their leader, H3R3T1C, they have released of what is now a new possible PS3 Exploit.
The new TIFF might be our ticket to a ISO Loader. By copying the TIFF image (download below) to a USB/SD card and opening it in the PS3, causes a unusual response in which the PS3 controls and XMB are still fully functional, and ables you to launch a game. The game will not launch completely but it allows a delay for a disk swap in which after swapping you remove the USB/SD card and the swapped game will boot without any errors!
How to use this exploit:
1. Put the .TIF on a USB - Download: http://www.ps3hax.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item56
2. Put a game in the PS3.
3. Insert the card with the .TIF exploit and go to "Photo icon" ... let it load.
3. Try to start the game and it should just lock up.
4. Take the USB out and the game should continue loading.
This potential TIFF exploit has been tested on firmware 1.31, 1.80, and the latest, 1.90.

PSXLoader — Load [Some] PS2 Homebrew on the PS3
Hermes, who is well known for PS2 homebrew — PS2Reality Mediaplayer & Guitarfun — has released an experimental homebrew loader for the PS3. Currently supporting only the two said homebrews; PSXLoader certainly demonstrates some potential; and, once the kinks are ironed out, we hope and imagine it possible to boot other PlayStation 2 homebrew.
To use (I think): you need firmware 1.90 or later and SWAP MAGIC version 3.6 or later.
Also, you need a series of modules, which are copyrighted by Sony, and for that reason, they’re not distributed in the package.
Here is a Google translation of the release thread:
Here teneis first release of this program, that consists of a shipper who adds/replaces the modules that lack in the BIOS of PS3, as well as the modules USB that use the applications of PS2 (and that are incompatible with the emulation under PS3)
At the moment single it is prepared to execute my Guitarfun game and the PS2Reality Mediaplayer, since this is one release premature, in order that podais to enjoy these applications already and to solve the problems that appear.
But ahead, one was to improve the GUI and to even increase the degree of virtualizacion, for those applications of PS2 that were suspended and they do not support pendrives or that modules “X” do not use.
Unfortunately with this preliminary version, the readme is Spanish. Pass it through Google Translator for a somewhat clearer understanding.
This can be downloaded in the PS3 Downloads section.

KIOSK/DEMO PS3 UNLOCK PASSWORDS & INFORMATION Updated 08/11/08
General Information:
Demo Mode units that are locked cannot access the XMB.
Demo units usually have a 150GB Hard Drive.
It should play PS1 and PS2 titles.
Unlocked, You can can use the browser.
You may have to use the unlock code repeatedly when accessing features, and after playing games.
Some Kiosk units have a 30-minute time limit for game play.
When set - Kiosk units are set to "freeze up" to prevent a person from hogging the console.
You have to update firmware for some games, that presents a problem; the unlock code changes.
Unlock codes may be different in their respective PAL and NTSC regions.
When trying to log on in friends menu, with a log on that is on the PS3, it may ask for a FW update.
Sony owns the Kiosk unit; Sony will not give you the unlock code, or any information on how to make it a retail console. If you posses one of these units, they will assume it is stolen merchandise. You usually have to get the code from the retailer if known, but common codes are listed in this post. If you send the unit back to Sony, it is reported that you won't get it back, or a replacement.
UNLOCKING
You will need to use the password to UNLOCK the unit from Kiosk/DEMO mode.
Procedure: Hold L1+R1+Select+Square simultaneously. When the security settings icon is selected in the XMB, it will ask for you to input a code (four digit code). You should start by using the codes listed below for your version firmware. Please PM the Administrator if any codes work, to add testimony to this message body.
The for sure way is to manually enter them, by starting at 0000, and work your way up to 9999 manually, as was done with the V1.5 PAL code listed below.
Here is a list of codes that been verified unlocked DEMO Modes in PS3s
V1.5 Pal: 8604 (Found by manually inputting, starting at "0000". Ausie console)
Pre V1.5x said to have no unlock code, this is not confirmed.
V1.5x code: 5202 (NTSC Units - for some local retailer shops, people say this worked).
V1.6x code: 7568
V1.7x code: 0506
V1.8x code: 7712 or 7259 (read four separate threads that 7712 worked)
1.9x - 2737
2.0x - 0219
2.1x - 2464
2.2x - 4801
2.3x - 6558
2.4x - 9015
Many people have verified these codes are valid, and work.
If you update the firmware when in demo mode, it updates the unit with new demo mode firmware (if available), and not a retail version firmware. The code then changes with the updated firmware, and it is reported that the console will re-lock with the code relative to that version firmware.
If any way to force a retail update to a kiosk unit, it will be posted, as of now, there is no method.
Once Unlocked: Unit will remain in DEMO MODE, but you will be able to access more features of the console. People have also reported larger Hard Disks in the units as well.
Things you can't do with a Demo console
No on-line Store.
You cannot use retail system updates.

PS3 Megabox Homebrew Project
Spanish-language site "Megalandia" has reported a new PS3 homebrew project called MegaBox. MegaBox is similar to a media center, similar to the XBMC on Xbox 1, fully functioning on the PS3. The MegaBox has many cool features that any PS3 owner would find interest in such as VoIP, P2P, TV, Movies (Including MKV), and much more! The best part is the program will require NO INSTALLATION, and would be OPEN SOURCE (based on FREEVO). In layman's terms, all you need to do is pop in a CD/Flash drive with the program and anyone can enjoy it without too much problems (no need for linux either). We have a small tutorial and the beta file if you are interested in trying this. Please note that it is very buggy at the moment and this is a BETA version.

I.LOAD - First Introduced: March 2008 - Who: flAshHeAd - Group[SLUMP]
Yet another load of crap!
Claims:
- i.load does not work on PAL PS3 (40GB) and NTSC (20GB) yet, but we work hard to get it
- 20GB NTSC, 60GB NTSC/PAL, 80GB NTSC running well (haven't fix all the bugs from the list below)
- source code will be avaiable 1 month after release for other developer
- website promotion on ps3news.com and maxconsole.com
- Big_T give forum support on ps3news and Zizzle on maxconsole.com
- first trial versions arrived trusted people (rs.com - filesize of the beta: 917 MB all in one)
- no worldwide release before every version works (including 20GB/40GB NTSC/PAL)
- release date is still set on March 23.th 2008 (if all versions work!)
- PlayStation 2 images working fluently; Saving possible!
- no success with images over 17.5GB sad
- Online play possible (no ban yet!)
- new trailer on the way
- new website planned for March 23.th
- you need Firmware 2.10 (not higher or below)
That's all for the moment.

March 11th, 2008:
Well...
...it's finally done!
It's now possible to play game images over 17.5GB with no lags!
i.load won't hang up anymore. So all bugs are fixed.
Big thanks to our beta-tester - DCP,FFM,Rob Samson! You guys are awesome!
And now a good message for all the 40GB owner - Jump for joy! You can run PS3 and PS1 backups, too! It was very hard to get it but we're proud of it!
So, please prepare your internet connection for this historic date, 'cause you will need to download 1.2GB (all in one package with manual).
Big_T and Zizzle will sign up on the websites ~ 5 minutes before the download is public. They won't answer private messages. So that's why they aren't regristed yet.
So and now we will have to wait to the PAL birthday of the ps3. I hope you got a party-hat :-)
Release: March 23.th - 11.23pm
Please take a look at our updated requirements
The Package at a glance:
This is the i.load package (without the .iso) you need to play backups. It includes everything you need to start i.load on your PS3 at home. The final version 1.4 works on every PS3 worldwide. But think of: 40GB systems can't run PS2 backups. You need a usb keyboard to navigate through the i.load menue.
You can use a smaller external HDD as well (120GB,250GB,320GB) but then you can't store many games in it, 'cause our temp-system needs a lot of HDD space.
Noctice: Use at your own risk. We're not responsible for any demages on your PS3.
Please take part in our latest poll.
Greetings,
Group [Slump]
March 13th 2008:
Important!
NOTICE: We've installed the latest 2.17 firmware on one of our 40GB systems. And the result:
They fixed the hole 10 days before i.load starts. So if you want to use i.load please do not install the latest firmware 2.17!
We have to test some other possibilities on 2.17 so stay tuned.

2.17? And now?
You got 2.17? Well, that's your problem. We don't care about it but don't cry next week and beg for a method to play backups on 2.17!
There will be no delay 'cause we want to share i.load with all of you. So let's celebrate together :-)
Our work still goes on.

News
Well it's a little bit late for some people. So we decided to host it longer than 6hours. Everybody must have the chance to download it. It will be available since we've made a new version of i.load. So the official release date of march 23. is canceled, 'cause it's tonight.
Please stay tuned. We're currently working on these 4 mirror's. Why 4 mirros? Please guess...

This was removed as well, but they claimed they had a hack can change the firmware on your PS3 . This would have been done following step by step instructions. As of 3/17/08 The software was in Debug phase." They had yet another timer on the same blog web space.
This is also FAKE and is no longer up.
