Final Notes
###########
There is probably some stuff missing. Send me comments on gtalk or PS3.
I have the PS3 running fine with FC6 no issues for now.
I use KDE but GNOME should also be working fine.
Offline
Not to be a pain but for completeness can you include a link to the fc5 install?
Offline
ok will do.
Offline
I am having problems installing the GUI, i had no problems installing the OS but i am having problems with installing the GUI.
I am not familar with commands within linux, it wont let me install any gui and keeps trying to connect to the internet.
Would you be able to update your tutorial for the PS3? some of the instructions are not exact, the installation is ok, but the GUI which you describe is incorrect. I am running Fedora 6 on min installation as noted by the instructions up above.
Offline
are you aware that you DO NEED the internet connection for this installation?
Offline
oh, sorry i wasnt aware, but my internet connection is active any way on my PS3. It just fails to connect to a mirror web site when attempting to install any of the GUI environments.
Offline
it need an internet connection using wired connection since linux doesn't have any wireless drivers working for ps3.
Offline
Yeah i have a wired internet connection, its even picked up the IP address i set it in the router so there is no real reason why it should have problems with the internet.
After installing Yellow Dog (which i recommend for first time users to linux), i have now went back to FC6. Firstly, i am not sure if the problem is due to the fact i am using a UK PS3, i thought they would all be the same but i guess they are all slightly different in firmware and regions.
Things i have used in this installation:
- UK PS3
- FC6-PPC
- Hash Calculator (to check for corrupted image)
- DVD Burner (Burn at the slowest speed possible)
- Linux Addon CD (for boot files)
So i started FC6 following your guide with full install on FC5, i would like to add one or two things to the tutorials above. When selecting the full install option, it takes about 5min before a progess bar shows, firstly, it will show a message that it will take 2 hours to install, then shortly after it will show a warning, then as mentioned before, after 5 mins it will show progress. I have also noticed that several files seem to fail during during installation, i am not sure if this is normal, the files seem to fail due to not finding them, i have checked checksum so the image is pure.
The min installation installs very quickly with about 170 something files being installed without any errors, i am currently on 41% 827 files copied and around 37% i had a few errors.
I will let you know how it goes when i finished.

several files failing?
this never happened to me... maybe I was lucky? maybe you skipped a step?
hmmm i will try this again when I have time this weekend.
Offline
GUI failed again to install, this was with a fresh copy of Fedora 6. It refuses to connect or find the mirror. The connection is sound, it works with Yellow Dog perfectly.
Offline
maybe addresses to the mirror is changed?
maybe that....
the files that needs to be downloaded now can't be found.
That may be the possible problem.
Because I don't think emtionchip will effect the way you use linux.
(I could be wrong on this... but I'm prettu sure)

Just so i can try and locate the problem and i am sorry to keep on bothering you but i really dont understand the problem and i really would like this to work.
What PS3 model are you using? (UK, US, JP...)
What firmware are you using? (1.1...1.6)
I am just trying to work out the difference between what i am doing and what you are doing. If you could try to do a fresh install of Fedora 6 for me and let me know how you get on i would be greatful.
Ok i am gonna run through everything i done to see if it matches up with what you done:
1) Format PS3 (alot 10GB to PS3, rest towards OtherOS)
2) Install Boot Files (from USB Device) (which came from the Linux Addon CD)
3) Reboot System, Insert Fedora Core 6 DVD PPC
4) Install Minmum (Has no Errors) / Install Maximum (Few Errors)
5) Once installation Complete, Insert Linux PS3 Addon CD.
6) Installation Complete, Reboot Console
7) Once Booted and logged into root access, type: yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"
Error Produced, cannot find mirror.
Thats more or less what i did, exactly as you did.
Update: i will upload a video of what i done so you can see if i have done anything wrong. The video will not be compressed so it will be large. It will be around 400MB, i will upload the link when its finished uploading.

hmmm thats really strange.
I have us version of ps3, firmware 1.31.
i used gnome as well since that is the most stable GUI while running linux.
I haven't tried it out recently but like I stated from above it may be the links.
I will try sometime this weekend and see if the same error happens to me.

go to: Link Removed [400MB - Uncompressed Video]
This video shows the whole installation process, hope it helps track down the problem.

holy mother of god, man!
you uploaded whole 400mb? wow.
I'll be sure to take a look.
401.1 MB downloading @ 120k - I'm downloading other things as well sorry.
It will roughly take about 1 hour and after I view it I'll let you know.
Just on the side note, did kde gui work for you?

as soon as you downloaded it, i will remove the link.
I have a special TV with built in Hard Drive so it makes recording alot easier.
It records it as mpeg so the file size is big but the video length is short.
It took about 4 hours to upload the video @ 30KB/sec.
KDE did not work either, it produces the same error with the mirror site (check the last min of the video to see the mirror error).

I have come to conclusion.
Links have problems.
one by one, tidious work but had to be done....
It seems to me that couple of links has gone bad. (weird... since I used this not too long ago... [early march? late feb? ] )
I'll try to fix the typos(?) and the actual broken links.
Ill still watch the videos to make sure that was the only problem.
Thanks for reporting razorwing.

I think error is in here. Where it actually have to connect to ftp.
Just out of curiousity Im asking this...
you didn't actually type in # in front of these lines right?
These are called rem and it's just there to show you these are what you have to type in....
Just checking

No problem, i am here to help as much as possible.
Yeah i know the # are just for typing, the command i used after installation was (extactly):
yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"
Let me know when you downloaded the video and go to the 10min mark of the video, you will see that the mirror its trying to locate is from http://mirrors.fedoraproject.com which its not finding. Why its not finding i am not sure.
Offline
It may be files are moved to different mirror?
I think I'm going to have to try install this again on my ps3 to find out for sure.
For now, I wait for your video to download.
Then we'll see. right now i'm looking for a way to use different mirror.
Offline
Your video looks pretty damn good.
After viewing the recordings there is 1 thing that I have seen...
and it was this,
Fedora 6 core kernel version.
Check the end of the video and you will see
"2.6.16 kernel."
I think this might be the source of the problem as I stated earlier in this tut,
Kernel used is the kernel in the PS3 Linux Addon CD. So be carefull and do not replace the kernel with the FC6 kernel.
However this does puzzle me, I'll look further into it this weekend installing this.
(50/50 chance since I didn't try it yet...)

Might be, not sure if it would explain the mirror change but hopefully we can get to the bottom of it this weekend. I will remove the link as you downloaded it.
If you find it easier, i will continue to make recordings.

razorwing, you don't have to. I know it's alot of work.
However when its really needed I'll maybe request for it if that's ok with you.
Tomorrow is my off day and i do all my experiments on that day.
We'll see. ![]()

Who knows, onces its sorted, we can have a full video of installing linux from start to finish with sound ![]()
