Replaced laser but still not reading ANY discs help!!!

Hi Guys,

I've come to this forum hoping for some help blush

I've bought a PS3 (60GB) that wasnt taking any discs into the drive. I've managed to re align the drive so now it takes in discs and ejects them OK. The drive still wsnt reading any discs do i replaced the laser with a new one (mechanism). The drive STILL refuses to read discs!mad

Now this PS3 had already been opened before I got it so I'm not sure whats been played with before. It powers up OK browses the internet and last night I performed a software update which went without problems.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive board and motherboard could be from different machines. How easy is it to tell if they are matched or not?

Or is there anything else that could be the problem?

Hoping to get this PS3 working again!

Thanks in advance for your help guys

Should be in the HELP section, since you are ASKING for help *MOVIED*

There is no way to determine if the BR-D matches the Motherboard.  You would need someone who has a stock 60GB, and they would have to check the BR-D board revision against what you now have.

Still, even if it did not match, it would NOT read GAME discs, but other discs would work; BR-D movies, DVD, and Audio CDs.  It not working at ALL means a total failure, and is probably a logic failure all the way around.

Do you get the ICON at the top right of the screen indicating it is TRYING to read the disc?  Did you rey DVD, or AUDIO CD?

Hi Powerslave

Thanks for your reply and I apologise if I posted in the wrong forum, i spent a while searching for similar threads before posting lol

Right, this PS3 does not play any discs (DVDs or PS2 games) but seems to recognise there is a disc in the drive, i get the spinning icon in the top right corner then nothing. I'm a bit more relieved that you say the blue ray drive would still read and play some discs as i had feared the board maybe from another machine. Hopefully this is a good sign?

What should I try now?

You have not answered what I asked, do Bluray movies work?  Do DVD movies work, and do AUDIO CDs work?   You keep stressing GAME discs, I get it, I asked about movies and audio.  If movies and Audio work, then that is NOT the drive it came with.  There is no fix except a send into Sony.

Right, this PS3 does not play any discs (DVDs or PS2 games)

So my only option is to change out the main board and matching BR-D board yes?

Sure, but what you are going to pay for that, a 60GB model, with matching BR-D anything?  Well, It's $125.00 for Sony to repair it, and it's going to cost you 150 - 200, or more, to buy the stuff on Ebay.

If you don't want a 60Gb Backward compatible model, then maybe you can find a matching pair.  People aren't selling matching pairs, because anyone who is selling a broken PS3; usually means one of those two inportant items has FAILED...  All the items you find will be either a bad blu-ray drive, or a bad motherboard.

You would have to get lucky, and find a 60GB model that only has a blu-ray drive with a MECHANICAL failure (everything else works), that you can buy, and use your BR-D mechanics on the system.  You won't find a WORKING married pair, because a married pair means the system is WORKING; and there is no reason to sell it unless the chassis is broken, or they're just selling the console period.

GO look on Ebay dude, you'll see what I mean.

Re: Replaced laser but still not reading ANY discs help!!!

Sorry to raise a dead thread but I am having a similar issue.  I have tried System File Recovery, Database Rebuild, full system recovery, harddrive reformat and replaced the laser.

The problem is that my PS3 reads DVD's, Audio and PS2 games.  Not PS3 games (don't know about Blu Ray movies as I don't have any to test with).

Thoughts?

But I already replaced the laser?  Wouldn't the fact that it reads other media indicate that the sled itself is fine?

Re: Replaced laser but still not reading ANY discs help!!!

nope. ps3 bluray laser is cheap and its a common problem for it to go but not the dvd/cd laser (there's 2 laser diodes in the sled) which is fixed by replacing the laser, sled, or drive. i dono what ur problem is tho, mb the sled u bought has a dead laser(where did u get it). also did this happen over night or after a fw update?

Re: Replaced laser but still not reading ANY discs help!!!

So, borrowed a blu-ray movie from my boss.  Works awesome.  Still doesn't read games.  I'm trying to remember when this exactly all started.  I think I did the firmware update before I started playing Demon's Souls but it may have happened afterwards.  I honestly can't recall.  I did update the firmware shortly after I got it (bought it used) but it was working with all media when I got it.  I've bought enough used thigns to make sure that something works.

So:

PS2 games - check
DVD's - check
Music CD's - check
Blu-Rays - check
PS3 Games - fail, doesn't even show in xmb (I also tried that whole, download a demo, and start the game from inside the demo thing)

Oh and this all happened AROUND the time of the 3.01 update, but I don't recall in enough detail if I updated and it stopped working or if I was playing after the update and it stopped working after that.

Re: Replaced laser but still not reading ANY discs help!!!

So, another update to my situation.  I'm really hoping I can get some help on this.

My friends PS3 laser died.  I tried the laser I bought in his machine.  Lo and behold it works like a hot damn.  So my laser was (or at least most likely) never an issue.

So we thought maybe it was a corrupt harddrive or something so we swapped his old harddrive into my machine (he also owns the same 60GB model plus harddrives shouldn't be an issue but at least this way we know it came from another PS3).

I managed to do all this and throw in a Blu Ray movie and it read that there was  disc and when I went to play it I got an 80099--- something error "invalid disc" and now it won't read blu rays or PS3 games again.

Joy.........

Is this a firmware thing or is my system just fried?  Please let me know.

Re: Replaced laser but still not reading ANY discs help!!!

My 60gb stopped reading ALL discs about 2 months ago.  I cleaned the laser, to no avail.

My friends 60gb recently died (YLOD), and after we fixed it and pulled the info off, he gave it to me to use the BR from.  SO i swapped the whole unit out into mine.  No go.

What else could be wrong?  I'm gonna try swapping the ribbons, but if neither one works, that leads me to believe that it's something else causing the problem.  No discs work, but the blue light comes on, and the little thing at the top is there, just no disc recognition.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

People, again, you can't swap a drive from one PS3 to another, they're KEYED to the PS3 it was MFRed with.  This is common knowledge, and I am surprised I still see people doing that without one bit of researching it first.

Re: Replaced laser but still not reading ANY discs help!!!

So, with the board being keyed, am i able to remove the laser/tray/etc one by one to try replacing piece by piece?

Is there any way to "re-key" the board?  How does it work when buying new BRD off ebay?

thanks again,

Well, did the swap, and it works!

Thanks for the help, I never would have imagined the boards are keyed (more research reveals the thought that they are keyed by revision, not necessarily per board).

Anyways, my kids love me again, and RB2 is back in business!

Thanks again!

Re: Replaced laser but still not reading ANY discs help!!!

No they are not KEYED by revision.  The logic board is keyed to the PS3 it was put into, period.  IT has to match the CPU KeyVault, same with XB360.

So then, the ones are ebay are no good to anyone?  Are they re-keyable or are there "unkeyed" ones that grab the key upon installation?  I'm not as concerned now, but just curious for any future issues that may arise.

thanks

NO the ones on Ebay are keyed, but you buy them to replace your Mechanics, if you have a good Logic Board.  There is no reprogramming the BR-Drives, so, people who buy them who don't anything about this, is a total waste. They don't tell you in the DETAIL most the time, that the drive won't work in your PS3, they just wanna sell it.  That's wrong, but then again, ignorance is no excuse.  If you are going to take on the self repair route of your PS3, you should know what you are up against, no matter WHAT.  All you need do it SEARCH the net for what you want to do (and here), and get your answer before buying something that will be a paperweight if you think it's simple plug-n-play.

People do this for the XBOX360 as well, more uneducated people...

There are no BLANK ones, and no they will not MARRY the motherboard upon installation, and nor will they ever do that.
