My PS3 keeps giving me this message when I start it up. I've tried taking out the hard drive and cleaning the connectors. I've tried a new hard drive. I'm pretty much at my wits end. I'd really rather not have to send it in to Sony if at all possible. Does anyone have a solution or even just a little bit of info to give me hope?

Alright, i think its the same problem i had. You need to change your drive to "master". Google might help, i'm on my PS3 atm so no links sorry.

SATA drives do not have a MASTER or SLAVE jumper selection, only IDE drives do... I am looking at my SATA WD5000AVS Green Power drive, there are NO jumpers.
The person says the PS3 is giving him THIS message, but doesn't tell us what it is, so how can anyone attempt to help?

Right, the jumper settings for SATA are not for Master or Slave, they are for drive configuration...
1. Spread Spectrum Clocking Disabled
2. SSC Enabled
3. MP2 Enabled
4. 150MB/s
I saw my post in that first link, I don't know WHAT I was thinking...

The message I'm getting when I start up the PS3 is "Cannot State - Cannont Find Correct Hard Drive"

Cannot STATE, or cannot Start?
Release 60/20 PS3 or other?
This the ORIGINAL drive or one you added/upgraded to?
Most people are having this problem AFTER upgrading to another drive, not with their OEM drives.
1. Your hard disk is BAD/going bad, you need a new one. This is a common problem with some of the WD Scorpion drives, with the release 60GB models. If there is a JUMPER for "reduced power spin-up," try that first.

If it will not work, no matter what you do, you're gonna lose all your stuff anyway:
1. From PS3 off.
2. Pressed and hold the power button until 2 beeps, then let it go. Otherwise the PS3 powers off if held too long.
3. From the menu, select "Restore File System".
4. See what happens.
If you cannot get the thing to boot no matter what, you need a new HDD. If not backed up, you lose everything.

It's "Cannot Start". Sorry, got to typing too fast.
It's a 60gig model that I got about 9 months after the initial PS3 release date.
Anyway, I've got a new hard drive and I'm still getting this message when I try to start it up; even with the new drive installed. I've done the power button hold routine and I can't even get to the system restore menu. It just continually brings up the aforementioned message.
I'm already resigned to losing my data. I can deal with that. I just can't really afford to get a new PS3 or ship it off to Sony to get another refurbed unit that's just going to crash in an indeterminate, but most likely short, period of time.

Do you hear the drive spin up?
It is odd, but it is an issue with the release models, thankfully, not for me. I only read more instances of it happening after people upgrade the drive.
Also, is the drive capped at 150MB/s? There is a jumper for that too, I think.
