Need help with ps3 HDMI hookup

Ok, my dad bought a Samsung Plasma tv a year or two ago. The model is ps50c91hd, the C91 range. About half a year ago I bought a ps3, expecting to connect it with the plasma to let it display in 1080p or 720p, for the Blu-ray and games. I got the ps3 home and hooked it up with a 'Powerwave' HDMI cable, and did everything in the ps3 instructions to make it work, e.g reset the cable connection by holding down the button, all of that. All I got when it tried to display in 720p was a big black screen, and then black and white fuzziness. So I tried 1080p. It said 'Mode not Supported', and 'No Signal'. So I tried 1080i and it shows the same as the 720p. It is only working in 576p through the HDMI cable, and does work fine with AV cables. I tried the cable and Ps3 on my friend's TV, works fine in both modes. That rules out the cable. I also have a DVD player hooked up with a separate HDMI cable to the plasma so it can't be the ports or (hopefully) the TV. I have ever since been looking through thousands of pages on google and nothing whatsoever on this exact issue! I did see something about the 'handshake' problems and HDCP compatibility issues, but not with this TV. I also saw people posting on reviews that this model works a gem with HD on the ps3! What am I doing wrong?

If anyone sorts this out I will thank and literally applaud them. I don't have the option to replace the TV or send someone to take a look at it, my parents don't think it's that important. If I have left any details out please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Re: Need help with ps3 HDMI hookup

That TV does not support 1080p, only 720p with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, so even 1080i would be 768p, which as you said, looks the same, so the TV is working properly.

How can you not know what the TV supports, when all you do is LOOK UP the model#?  Took me all but 13 seconds, so why would you even TRY 1080p?  You should leave it on AUTO.

So, you are in a PAL region, right, since you said 576p is all you are seeing right now?  Pal region resolutions are different than NTSC.    You are going to have to wait till someone else with a PAL set and PS3 can explain it to you.

Re: Need help with ps3 HDMI hookup

Ok, buddy, it was a mistake in typing, obviously 1080p isn't supported as it says on the tv, and if you didn't read what I typed, the problem is my tv won't work on anything above 576p, and it's a HD tv for god sake! Also I said that nobody else was having problems with this same issues. I'm trying to get help from where ever I can, how can it matter what region you're from? I know you're trying to help, but it's a help thread not a thread to practically beat people with sticks.

PAL and NTSC tv's handle a few things differently. Not sure if it still applies to HD tv or not though. PAL refreshes at 29.something FPS while NTSC is 25.

Ok, BUDDY (say it like the Napoleon character did in Bill & Ted's excellent adventure for the afflict; BOOD-IE), how was that a mistake in TYPING, when you said you tried 1080p, and got "MODE NOT SUPPORTED". Then you even said you tried 1080i, and it was the same as 720p.  So nuh-uhhh; don't give me the excuse that it was a typing mistake, that's what YOU DID.  You're saying it was a typing mistake so you don't look stupid.  I just asked WHY would you even try 1080p, when the TV doesn't support it.

If you would have said you tried 1080p, and it looked the same as 720p, WITHOUT mentioning you tried 1080i, then I would give you the typing mistake, putting the "p" after 1080, when "i" was the intended letter, is obvious there.  No, no, you mentioned both 1080p, and 1080i with different results.

Don't try and pull a fast one on good ole' Mr. Spock now...

he didint know the tv didint support 1080p until he tried to change it on his ps3 and it said mode not supported so he had no reason to look it up till after his problem.

@Chelsea Fc

try setting the hdmi to automatic. if that dosent work then try playing with the hdmi things under "display settings"

NO, he said it was a typing mistake, that he KNEW it did not support 1080p, he's back-peddling:

HE wrote:

As I said, why did he say he tried it, if he knew the TV did not support it?  So, his typing MISTAKE was probably just a lie; I think more like an exaggeration, just wanted to type...

I also said to set it automatic:

I wrote:

You should leave it on AUTO.

It's all 'bout been covered, no one who has a PAL set has replied yet.

Re: Need help with ps3 HDMI hookup

with hdmi, cable quality does not make a difference. the cable will either work or not work. gold plating is absolutely unnecessary with hdmi. my $1.20 hdmi cable works exactly the same as $200 monster cables. the only difference is build quality.

Re: Need help with ps3 HDMI hookup

There is no basic video data difference between HDMI cables, the changes are mostly for audio and communications between components.  If you move a HDMI cable and the picture gets "Fuzzy" then that's an ANALOG signal, becuase a digital picture would pixilate, not FUZZ out...   I have a complete list of Versions int he forum.

http://www.ps3-hacks.com/forums/viewtop … 283#p13283 (Now updated to V1.4)

HDMI VERSION LISTING
HDMI 1.0 - Released December 2002.

    * Single-cable digital audio/video connection with a maximum bitrate of 4.9 Gbit/s. Supports up to 165 Mpixel/s video (1080p60 Hz or UXGA) and 8-channel/192 kHz/24-bit audio.

Now, for the Changes to V1.0:

HDMI 1.1

Released May 2004.

    * Added support for DVD Audio. (See, no video change)

HDMI 1.2 - Released August 2005.

    * Added support for One Bit Audio, used on Super Audio CDs, up to 8 channels.
    * Availability of HDMI Type A connector for PC sources.
    * Ability for PC sources to use native RGB color-space while retaining the option to support the YCbCr CE color space. (no video change for devices like DVD players, PS3, so on)
    * Requirement for HDMI 1.2 and later displays to support low-voltage sources

HDMI 1.2a - Released December 2005.

    * Fully specifies Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) features, command sets, and CEC compliance tests. (Again, no video change)

HDMI 1.3 -Released 22 June 2006. (PS3 is V1.3 release models)

    * Increases single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbit/s)
    * Optionally supports 30-bit, 36-bit, and 48-bit xvYCC with Deep Color or over one billion colors, up from 24-bit sRGB or YCbCr in previous versions.
    * Incorporates automatic audio syncing (Audio video sync) capability.
    * Optionally supports output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio streams for external decoding by AV receivers. TrueHD and DTS-HD are lossless audio codec formats used on Blu-ray Discs and HD DVDs. If the disc player can decode these streams into uncompressed audio, then HDMI 1.3 is not necessary, as all versions of HDMI can transport uncompressed audio.
    * Availability of a new mini connector for devices such as camcorders.

Just ads support for the advanced video output for newer devices, but 1.0 would still work

HDMI 1.3a - Released 10 November 2006.

    * Cable and Sink modifications for Type C
    * Source termination recommendation
    * Removed undershoot and maximum rise/fall time limits.
    * CEC capacitance limits changed
    * RGB video quantization range clarification (not a video change, just clarified in tech data)
    * CEC commands for timer control brought back in an altered form, audio control commands added.
    * Concurrently released compliance test specification included.

HDMI 1.3b - Released 7 October 2007. (No specs yet)

So, you see, as I said, BASIC 1080p is workable with a V1.0 cable, with PS3, though the PS3 is up to v1.3 compliant.  Using a 1.0 cable with higher color TV would still work, just without the color range.

So, as said ANY HDMI CABLE WILL WORK!
