In windows you select the modem connection and the ethernet connection and bridge them basically in control panel(might want to enable QOS and make sure you're using DHCP in the two.) You have to set the laptop IP as the default gateway on the other machine. On Linux I think you can do it all through the connection configuration by doing something similar.
Also it's worth noting if the connection is something slow like wireless WAN or -~450Kbps broadband you'll notice a lot of lag. On wireless WAN you'll barely be able to keep a connection unless you have low interference. I seen someone try to do this with there house LAN on a verizon wireless broadband connection and it was a nightmare even when perfectly configured on all ends.

I'd get DSL or Cable for the WAN. Wireless is unreliable in most environments without repeaters and big antennas. I have the latest and greatest Verizon USB WWAN adapter and software and I get packets dropped any time I'm not in a major metropolitan area. Being close to a cell tower doesn't even help sometimes because of radio interference.

Windows ICS needs to be installed. Then you can plug your PC into the Laptop's LAN (has to be a CROSSOVER CABLE), and the LapTop itself, ICS, acts as the router.

I forgot about the special CAT5 cable. I did one for someone where they had a desktop in their main room, and a desktop in their bedroom, plus small wifi devices. The desktop in the main room had a WWAN USB adapter, I just put a router on the main desktop and set it as the gateway in the router with DHCP and the WAN and LAN bridged. It worked but it dropped a lot because of all the wireless, and all I could do was use QOS to try and make it better and have signal db at 100%. The other desktop rarely held a stable connection.
EDIT: I just found a bug in the forum system. I'm seeing double posts, but if I delete one both delete. I guess there is a miscalculated PHP loop somewhere. +It stopped when I stopped my last session...weird.

That DOUBLE POST thing has happened to me before, it is not a GLOBAL issue, it is user to user, and yeah, it is strange.
NO you can't use the PS3 lan cable, it has to be like the XB1 "Link" cable, which is a crossover cable.
Windows has ICS, you have to ADD it. I forget where, but it's an option Win has, but doesn't install by default. YOU have to add it, windows components, something like that.
