Re: Use ps3 card reader as a USB card reader on ur computer

Yeah, basically it's a USB multi-card reader anyway...

The difference is the multiple input voltages, where as a USB one would take the 5V from the port, and distribute it to each card reader.  If you see step 4, you are taking the PC USB header, and distributing the wires...  Too much work, when you can buy a card reader cheap.    This is, basically for someone who has plenty of time to waste, and wants a multi-card reader from their broken PS3...

I have done similar things in the past.  It is a great learning tool, to do things like that.

I have one of my 360s apart, and keep looking what to do with it.  I repaired the DVD drive, by buying another one, and swapping PC boards, so I have a total of 66.00 for this Xbox 360, 30 to buy it, 30 for the drive, 6.00 for the open-up tool.  I hard-wired the GPU side fan to 100%.  I also added a small chipset cooling fan to the floating heatsink behind the power pannel. m Just looking and looking, see what else...  I may buy a WiFi adapter and internalize it...

Just looking for a local modding service, so I can ship it out...  I won't even bother to put it back together, that way, it's easy for them.  I will just ship the 360 with no case, so it's a quick and painless mod.

I may buy a WiFi adapter and internalize it...

Now THAT would be awesome, does the elite have internal wifi? If you could do something like that cleanly and "hack" (used loosley) the box as well you could have a profitable devise to sell.
""hacked and Modded 360s for sale, includes internal wifi!" (i know you don't need the money but maybe pitch it to someone trying to make money modding, though they've probably thought of it already..)

I understand taking things apart to understand them, or modifying them or parts within them for fun and to see what you're capable of. I fully understand that, but the mod above seems like a complete waste. A better one would be to and the internal Usb ports and internal card reader to the newer model PS3s. The previous 80Gb model was so perfect, why would they remove the card readers? I use my usb ports and card readers ALL the time.

Re: Use ps3 card reader as a USB card reader on ur computer

None of the Xbox360s have internal WiFi, but you can do that with the Adapter you buy, it HAS to be the Xbox360 WiFi adapter, no 3rd party ones work.  You take it all apart, and mount the board inside, and wire it to the REAR usb port from Inside.  Drill a small hole for an antenna mount, and put the antenna out, and upward, like an older wireless router.

The cards are not all that powerful enough to keep the antenna inside, however, you may be able to keep it inside, and mount it by one of the upper vent hole areas, which is what I would do.  There is some space between the DVD and side, and more room on the right side.  One of the side pannels looks like there is room between it and the metal portion of the inner case.

Space is limited in there, you can also internalize the HDD, there is room for that to the far right.  Not sure you could take apart a wireless bridge, and wire it to the LAN port...  Where there is a will, there is a way, I know I could do it no problem, at least the WiFi adapter internlize, and HDD.  I think I will internalize the HDD, YEAH! Since I have it ALL apart, why not...

The XBOX360 mainboard is mounted to a 3/4 metal inner casing, with no top on it. basically, it's an entire case with no top, and partial front.  The plastic case just surrounds the 3/4 metal one.  The "X" clamps are also mounted to the metal, so it's a RUGGED design, no doubt.  Since there is no internal power supply, there is room for other stuff, mostly on the right side...

There is no room under the DVD drive, the GPU and heatsink is right there, this is a MAJOR design flaw. The CPU heastink is huge, while the GPU one is thin, but uses twice horizontal the area of the CPUs heatsink.  Then on the latter modified GPU heatsink; that has the copper tube arm attached, with the floating heatsink behind the power button panel attached to that arm.  Just a cheap attempt to draw more heat from the GPU, but the airflow where that floater is, not all that good, which is why I added a 1" chipset cooling fan. Most of the cooling air comes in from the SIDES...  though the tunnel is designed for optimal airflow, the GPU still has that .5" x 4" scoop, while the GPU has the huge scoop...  Bad design, I have no doubt.  So, I wired the LEFT fan on high.  That, because I blew out that fan's circuit when the 1" fan wires touched momentarily before I could crimp a connector to them...

Wait, was it still plugged in? How could that happen without power?

This (your whole idea) is kinda funny to read because it makes you wonder why MS hasn't changed the internal layout themselves. You say there's a design flaw but maybe they have a big reason why they havn't changed it themselves, some reason im sure you'll run into if you keep this up. There's no reason a newer model with a different sub-name, like the elite, couldn't look slightly different than the other 360s so that's the bases of my thought of there being an even bigger problem.

Won't internalizing the HDD cause even more internal heat? I know it's external so you can upgrade them in a user friendly sort of way but maybe it's outside for another reason. Also, the Elite is 120Gbs which they make seem like it should be more than enough and they STILL did not make it internal. There's got to be a good reason, im sure it crossed the mind of someone important.

If i had a say in the actual 360 design id say expand the case 1/2", add more ventilation holes and rearrange everything in a way that will dissipate heat better and if there's room add things like internal wifi. Them market it as the newest, high end model.

I know the Arcade model is the best seller of the 3 options so it would be costly to setup a new assembly line (basically) for a model that isn't going to sell as well but it should still be an option.

Re: Use ps3 card reader as a USB card reader on ur computer

The console was ON when the wires touched, I was verifying operation.

A LAPTOP drive doesn't put out as much heat as a 3.5" drive, and it will fit in there...  They're THIN, it may fit between the plastic bezel and chassis on the right side too.  Thing is, the SATA/POWER port is a header on the mainboard, I need to make a cable.  llama.com has the instructions, looks like too much work...  I'll pass...

As far as the DESIGN flaw, they know it, but there is nothing they can do about it now.  That's why there is a PC case made specifically for the XBOX mainboard...  The DVD drive is right om top of the GPU heatsink, so you got the drive heat, plus the heat from the GPU?  NO wonder the lasers and mechanics go on the drives, the heat!
