How much power do i have access to?

i do allot of 3D stuff. could i use the PS3 has a high powered render (the render engine i use is software based so no need for a high end 3D card)

or as a realflow water simulator

my laptop specs here

win7 64bit
4gb ram
1.9 ghz dual core
ATI X1200 gfx card

is the PS3 better or worse or same?

Re: How much power do i have access to?

You don't have access to the GFX card while in linux, so your computer is better for rendering.

Re: How much power do i have access to?

Why would a renderer completly ignore the processing power of a GPU and use the CPU? That just doesn't make sense and like "nick" said you don't have access to most of te hardware so no point wastng your time, use the PS3 for what it was designed for............ playing games, also very good for streaming media wink

Re: How much power do i have access to?

Why don't you install linux and run your rendering program and find out? or you could ditch the laptop and build yourself a decent AMD Phenom II X4 810 / 2.6 GHz processor with 4Gb of ram or 8Gb if your desperate.

but to answer your question: If I remember correctly you have full access to the PS3 CPU but it also depends on how well your program can run on the PS3 because it's not really designed to be used on the PS3.

Re: How much power do i have access to?

That new graphics patch for Linux is out, see the NEWS forum.   It helps, but still, the RSX is restricted.

You people ask questions, but won't try it and see?  It's only that far off dude, just trying it.  You already done it on another device, that took 40 minutes, so try PS3 and see...

There are some anomalies in that graphic, but I guess it's all in the physics engine you're using...

Can you even get a renderer for Cinema4D on PPC Linux?

For PPC as in Mac O/S?  Yeah, but for Linux?  No, not yet, if ever and they may call it something else...
