Re: how to avoid updates

I don't see how they can FORCE people to update to play games.  There has to be SOME people, that do not have an internet connection, or no other way to actually UPDATE their PS3, right?  SO, how are they moving along with new game NEW titles?   Has anyone just unplugged their LAN cable before trying to play a game, so it does not see the internet, so it won't ask to update?  The games would have to come with the firmware updates for people who DO NOT have any way of updating their console, right?  Never looked in to it, but is curious...

I cannot believe that Sony would screw over people who do not have any method of updating their PS3s, and lose out on THOSE people buying new games.  The only way the PS3 knows there is an update, is being connected to the internet, and SEES it?  If I unplug it, it doesn't tell me a new firmware is available...

With the Xbox360, if you do not have an internet connection, it doesn't tell you anything about updates, ANY updates; AND, the games do not fail to run because of it.  You won't get patches, but still, the games ALWAYS run, regardless of what version Dashboard and Kernel you have.  I refuse to believe that Sony is FORCING people to update for new games, when those people don't have a means to do it.

Sure, the XB360 game discs have the updates on them, but, I have never SEEN a game update my dashboard or Kernel.  The JTAG hack for the XB360, that now allows unsigned XEX, and home-brew - yes, it's XB1 hacked now; but requires a certain Kernel.  Still, I have played new games, and nothing has been updated.  Oh, I probably got your attention with the XB1 comment, yes, it is busted wide open, with a certain Kernel.  There is no SIMPLE solution yet, but I can imagine the mod-chip retail package will be like the Infectus with the patched Kernel. You can use that NOW, on your own, but I see retail product coming in a few months.

If I unplug from live, which my MODDED box is, it does not tell me I need system updates, and it does not tell me I need a GAME title update.  I sign in, get the error for no LAN basically, then OK, and I go.  I played the new Call of Duty, which clearly has the latest update on the disc; did NOTHING, I am at the same kernel I was before playing it.

So, again, how can PS3 games demand a certain version firmware to play a game, if that game disc does not have an update on it?  Or, do they?  Hell, I have had it connected to the internet since I got it, so never relied on any other source for updating.

ALSO?  You may as well update, because there are no hacks for the PS3, and won't be for quite some time.  M$ box is a non legacy PC, with the security, where the PS3 is almost 90% proprietary, and their JTAG ports are secure...

That's fine then, but M$ does not MAKE you update to play the game, only to play online.

Re: how to avoid updates

Tekken 6 did an update on my XBOX-360 and my systems not connected to the net because the drives flashed.

I've never had a PS3 disc update my system, it's ALWAYS been updated by internet besides if Sony was FORCING people to update then surely the updates would start automatically either by disc or net?

Doing an automatically over the net would be a bit unfare anyway as it would use a persons bandwidth without their permission, unless of course it's in the EULA

Re: how to avoid updates

Like Mick said, MW2 told me it needed an update to play. Its the same system employed by the PSP I guess. The PSPs game require you to update to play certain ones, the PS3 has been the same I would imagine.

Re: how to avoid updates

If he has absolutely no internet connection, then I suggest he gets one lol, and you can download and install from USB if that person could get to a public library or somewhere with free internet.

Re: how to avoid updates

Correct me if I'm wrong, but signing in the PSN after having launched the game won't work? Will it ask to update anyways?
