Hi I have the 80 gb playstation 3. I bought without the blu ray not working figuring I can fix it myself. But I ran into something interesting when I was testing it and maybe someone can help me answer a question. When I got it the firmware had not been updated for a long time so I put a bd disc in and it actually showed the disc in the system, but it wouldn't let me play it without updating first so I did the update and after doesnt even recognize the disc being there. Also I tested it by putting a regular dvd and ps2 game in which both worked fine. So my question is for anybody who's had a burnt out blu ray, does it still play dvd's or does it do nothing for all types of discs? Also do you think it might be possible if its a firmware problem or maybe a dirty lense. I'd appreciate any help with this mystery
Thanks

it is most likely the laser. newer ps3's have a bum bluray laser (it actually has 2 lasers one for bluray and the other for dvd's/cd's) so you can replace the laser assembly or br drive but make sure u keep your logic board (circuit board) for the drive as its married to the motherboard

That's what they get for using the CHEAPER $8.00 blu-ray diode....

is the 8 dollar diode specific to the newer models or all models?

NEW models, they caught a break in the MFR process, and are using a cheaper BR-D diode now. Still, that was sometime last year...
