OK. I wanted to dual boot with XP. Don't ask. I knew I needed to install XP on a new partion then restore the Vista bootloader then add XP to that bootloader. Only problem is I can't get the Vista bootlader back. I don't have a Vista DVD because my computer came with Vista already on it. It came with about 10GB set aside for a HP Repair thing that I had to burn to 3 DVDs. When I put the first one in I can run a repair thing and actually get to a windows repair thingy and it detects a corrupt boot sector but can't repair it. Maybe if I got an actual Vista DVD it would work? Unfortunately I don't know where to get one. Maybe I could "borrow" someones? Any help will be appreciated.

Fixed it. Apparently Microsoft heard the cries of people who buy machines pre-loaded with Vista. If you're having a problem like mine, check this web site out! I thought I could do the same thing with my backup disks but I guess not. This Disk is basically the Vista install disk without Vista.

I had the same problem, I posted this about a month ago. I had XP installed, put Vista on, but when choosing XP in the O/S options, it would not boot. I decided to go Vista overall, and scrapped the XP. I had to use a CD BOOT disc in order to get XP to load.
I have the Vista 32 and 64bit recovery discs, but it wasn't vista I lost, it was XP Home... Anyhow, I ended up with just Vista... I just need more RAM, and regular DDR-400 is more than DDR2-533 right now, MUCH MUCH more!!

Well I'm working on getting dual boot to work. You need files from the XP boot loader because they completely changed how Vista's works to make it easy to dual boot and such but only for Vista and higher.

Yeah, I know, there is a program you can install for Vista that manages the boot-loaders. That worked ONCE, then I changed something (was not content) and totally botched it up...

Here you go "Easy BCD" it's a free program to manage dual boot systems, I personally use this program and I would recommend it to anyone.
You can download it from here ----> http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FE8VLNTI

Yeah I know about Easy BCD but the loader for Vista is different from the one that boots XP so you need to do a little more. Actually it's just coping some files basically but I can't find the files.
EDIT: The files I was looking for on XP'x drive were already on Vista's drive.

Easy BCD is for Vista, quick walk through......
1. Windows Vista already installed, install XP on a second partition.
2. After XP has finished installing and has loaded up, install Easy BCD on to XP.
3. Use Easy BCD to restore Vista's boot loader and then use the correct section to add XP to the boot loader.
4. Restart your PC, during the boot sequence you should now get a screen asking you what OS you want to boot in to.
