Yeah, the Panasonic Q, released in December 2001, as a "multimedia console" is a just a version of the GameCube, that has the ability to play DVDs, audio CDs, MP3 and CDs, as well as several other features. The system was officially released in Japan ONLY. The GameCube lacks DVD playback functionality, which is a feature all its competitors had, so this one was made after the GC.
Panasonic stopped making them in December 2003 due to low sales; because? It was cheaper to buy a standard Game Cube and a standalone DVD player for less than the price of the Q. So, it is not a very common purchase, except for some serious collectors.
Other features of the Q:
Backlit LCD
Front-loading slot disc tray.
Optical sound output supporting Dolby Digital 5.1
Separate subwoofer jack
Stainless steel chassis (one reason it was expensive).
Capable of installing all of the GameCube hardware upgrades; however, because of the legs on the bottom, it requires a special Panasonic Q Game Boy Player unit designed specifically for it.
Now, the real reason people wanted them: Due to the feature of a DVD-ROM drive in, it has become a popular hit amongst gaming enthusiasts who wish to, umm, make their own "backup" copies of GameCube games, which can be burned on a home PC playable in the Q.
So, there you have it...
