Internet

Right now I have really shitty wireless internet. Do you think it would be possible to contact time warner and pay them to run a cable down to my house? lol. Its not as un realistic as it seems. I live in between two state highways that go right in through town where it cuts off at for road runner. Anyways theres people who live farther out in the middle of no where than I do and they have road runner... just thought Id add that in. So.... do you think I could convince them? Ill pay them too. Im that desperate.

Re: Internet

They usually will not do that unless a larger percentage of people in the area also want TW Cable.

If they were to just run cable for you?  You're talking BIG BUCKS man...

Cricket has new Cell internet for $40.00 a month, they say unlimited but it has a 5000GB bandwidth cap.

Wild Blue also offers reasonable satellite internet.

I really doubt they would just run cable down there for you to get internet, and; there is more to it than just running the cable that supplies the cable TV.  I have had comcast cable three to four years BEFORE they even offered high speed internet in my area, something about they didn't have any NODES in the area.  I have only had comcast internet for about 4-years, and have lived here for eight or nine years with Cable TV.  Even though I have Satellite as my primaty entertainment, I have always had BASIC cable.  Oh, and I still can't get DSL over the phone line, and I want Fios, for which I probably won't see till I'm eighty years old.

Re: Internet

Just about my whole city is using timewarner. Not to mention they offer time warner on the other side of town where i live on the same highway but dont on my end. My friend who literally has maybe 10 - 15 people live on a 50 mile road has embarq high speed.. which is bullshit. I don't want satellite internet though because it has horrible ping time. Bad for online gaming. And I don't think I can get that cricket crap.

You will most likely get denied for them to drop a new line to your house. Honestly though it wouldn't hurt to try. Whats the worse they can say?

Re: Internet

Usually they will do it for businesses but not too sure about residential. I work as a computer system engineer at many different places (basically a road tech) and they will run cable internet to a business but it is pricey as hell. For 1 company to get it it was over $1000.

Also, Power slave was talking about satellite television. not satellite internet. As someone who has satellite internet, I never recommend it to anyone who has another choice. You will never be able to play online on the PS3 really cause you lag like a mofo.

Re: Internet

Unlucky, in most cases over here, Virgin Media who have the best internet in the country, including most of it being fibre optic, would be happy to wire the cable from the street up to your house or even down the street if yours hasn't been wired. And all for free. They would usually ask others down the street if it means getting a cable down the street but bare in mind that they have to dig up the side of the road after they have permission and then lay a very expensive cable.

I doubt you'd be able to get a company to wire you up alone unless it's just your street. Try getting some others in your area to sign a petition and send a copy to them and they will listen up more.

Im sure I could get people to sign a petition just because they don't care and wouldn't mind signing it. But i know for a fact that if they ran a wire down throught the highways and roads in between the highway and notified to people who can now get it time warner would get alot more customers. Obviously not enough to make a difference but a good amount of people. Everyone here would prefer digital TV over satellite. Also im sure the internet would be cheaper than the wireless. But the only problem is the cost. Plus im not sure who I would contact to even ask them about it. I looked on roadrunner.com and they dont even have a section for highspeed internet where I can go on to look at. But my family owns their own business which used to be out here in this area on my street but recently moved into town. Do you think I could convince time warner to run it out here and claim that we need it for business. And of course mention the many new customers they would get.

Re: Internet

If you can get current customers to say they'll upgrade or whatever then they should have no problem doing it. If not, move to the UK to take advantage on reasonably priced 20Mbps (soon to have 50 too) through fibre optic that doesn't get slower the further away you are from their exchange! lol

what's reasonably priced?  I have 1.5Mbps for $30  (23.80 in EURO)  Cable companies in US don't know reasonable...

Re: Internet

Yeah, I am paying 45.00 a month for Internet.  It's 8Mbps though, with 10-12Mbps burst rate...

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Download Speed: 6127 kbps (765.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2169 kbps (271.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

So, that's 6Mbps down, and 2Mbps up.  I am supposed to be at 8Mbps...  They never give you what you're supposed to be at.

Also, you are only as fast as the server is sending to you anyway.  So, these REAL HIGH speeds are not necessary when you are only getting a file at 350KBss, when you are capable of 750+ you know?

I never get downloads at more than 500KB/s anyway...   2Mbps is a good cheap deal if you can get it, because not everyone is on the real high-speed backbones.

Differeent Server:
Download Speed: 6862 kbps (857.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2200 kbps (275 KB/sec transfer rate)
Call came in on this test.

Same server as above:
Download Speed: 7144 kbps (893 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2321 kbps (290.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Nothing on the net...

I did see the value jump to over 8Mbps, then it dropped down as the speed test was going.  Still, I am suppsoed to be 8 continuous, and 10Mbps burst...

I guess if the TEST servers were faster, I may get a much truer rating, but I am pretty fast as it is.

Re: Internet

I pay Frakkin' $55 a month for 1.5mbps!! THATS WHAT I MEAN WHEN I SAY BULLSHIT. You wanna know the fun part about a small locally owned ISP. I know the guy in person and I think I pissed him off for downloading too much maybe? Even tho there is no limit on downloading. So I think he throttled it down. Now Im paying for the maximum speed he offers when Im getting a 500k speed now. Less than the minimum he offers. I sent him a pretty convincing email of me ruling out every possible problem on my end that could cause this leaving a problem on his end or something he did. He hasnt responded yet. But still it pisses me off. All you people who have like 10mbps speed or more and you think its not fast enough you tought wrong. You dont even know. My connection is the dial up of the new age.

Re: Internet

20Mbps is almost useless if not communicating with other Fios backboned systems.  As I stated, I got 8Mbps, and I never get downloads that fast because no one is sending that fast.  IF you notice, your UPLOAD speeds are about a 3rd of what your downloads are.  So, people seeding on torrents are limited, but the speed comes from getting the data from multiple IPs.

So, you have 20Mbps, sure, and WOW, but I can only send to you at 2Mbps, so what's the use?  Once everyone is up to par, then it's worth the money.   I would never buy Fios at that price for the reason I am stating.  I know 1.5Mbps seems slow, but it's better than 56Kbps.

Re: Internet

Yeah but now-a-days the internet is EVERYWHERE. With satellites and everything. Its a matter of how much you will pay for your internet and not if its available. So what im saying is my next best choice from wireless is satellite. Which is nearly 80 bucks a month for 1.5mbps and a horrible ping time. My ping is still good with my connection. I cant say the same for the speed but atleast I can play my games online. Im thankful for that much of it. And 20mbps is worth the money. One because even if your not downloading full speed from someone say you were only downloading half speed, the other half of your connection your not using could be used to browse the internet without even noticing your downloading anything. With mine when im downloading something it will affect my whole connection. My games tend to lag a bit. Anyone else in my house loads webpages slowly. Same with me. So when your downloading something and your complaining your not getting the most out of your internet you could be. If you need to download multiple things you could because your not using your full speed. Or you could still get on web sites and not even notice a change in load times. And sure 1.5mbps seems slow but not when my ISP throttled my speed down to 500k and still charges me for 1.5mbps. He doesnt even offer 500k. The lowest he offers is 768k. I look through his terms of service and no where does it say he can adjust our speed to what ever he likes. Or anything like that. Could he get introuble for doing that? Maybe. Do I have proof? No. Either theres something wrong somewhere in the connection that is causing my speed to be this slow and hes too proud to admit it or he has throttled it down. I'd be happy with just 1.5mbps because I dont have to pause youtube videos and wait for them to load when I had my 1.5mbps (HQ youtube videos). I sent him an email but i doubt he will respond. Which is why i made this topic in the first place.

Re: Internet

Yeah but thats in mexico. I really dont think alot of people in mexico have computers. Its not like in America where everything runs on technology.

And yeah sure some people may not be as fortunate as me but when im paying for a speed that im not getting then its a different story. But at those prices for mexico I really doubt alot of mexicans have the internet. From my understanding its alot harder down there to make money than it is up here.

Re: Internet

Im making progress. I WILL make sure my voice is heard.

You know whats really sad though. Is when your ISP can be such a dick and frak with your internet soooo much it forces someone to do something like this. He will regret the day he messed with me. I'm almost positive a good portion of his customers will be gone once time warner moves out here. Because here you have to pay for a separate phone service, then tv (Satellite which isn't reliable), and dare I say wireless internet.

Currently im paying 55 a month for internet. Most people around here are paying either 35 or 45 - 50 for internet. So that's what half the price timewarner offers for a full bundle? Not to mention HD digital tv. Better than satellite. And the, I think, 5mbps internet speed. So im sure thats much cheaper than the total being spent around here.

TV over cable is better than Satellite?  Not till March 09 dude.  Most cable companies are still using ANALOG signals for some stations.  In March 09, of course, everyone is mandated to switch to digital signals.  Still, even if it is a low rez picture, digitalizing it won't make it any better.

I have been using Satellite for TV for over 10 years.  EVERY channel is digital, because that's how satellite signals are transmitted.  Also, you have direct fiber and sat uplinks with TV stations, thus you are getting the best pictures on Satellite.  I have problems here and there, but it is usually receiver related. I get weather blackouts, but that doesn't last more that 5-15 minutes anyway, and well, with EZTV, I don't miss an episode of anything.  I have had my CABLE go out more than Satellite over my lifetime-total television viewing experience.

Cable will have to upgrade once FIOS has taken hold.  You only have a 550Mhz bandwidth on a cable line.  So, cable will have to either go Fiber, or upgrade all their cabling to what is used in satellite (LNB to SWITCH/Receiver) connections, and why would they do that?  So, Cable will SOON be the low end like telco lines are now, due to FIOS.

Re: Internet

With that you have to pay for internet through your Mobile phone company.  I don't know how you would share that internet other that through a laptop.  It would be a royal pain in the ass.  I say cable internet would be that best choice.  Satellite for TV.  I had my dad convinced to change to Satellite but we never did.  Anyone have anything to say about Satellite TV?  It would be like $5-10 cheaper and we would get more channels, they'd be in all rooms, all digital, would look less grainy, and my TV line wouldn't have to be slip so a direct line for my internet.  Not a bad idea IMO.
