Ripping Blu-Ray on DVD drive

I heard from someone that if you stuck a bluray disc in a normal dvd drive in a computer you can get this program that will read bluray discs but not write them. How ever I don't know how true that is since bluray uses a different laser to read and write. Is this possible?

Re: Ripping Blu-Ray on DVD drive

naw i dont think so. the blu-ray laser is much finer. you might be thinking of VMDhttp://www.nmeinc.com/ which uses the red laser and for most dvd burners only requires a chip to be changed. today or yesterday they announced 100GB disks http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/29/roya … ompetitor/

Re: Ripping Blu-Ray on DVD drive

There is NO WAY to Rip a BR-D from a regular DVD Drive.

The laser is not even the correct wavelength: 405 nm blue-violet laser -vs- 650 nm red laser, near infrared lasers at 650 nm and 780 nm respectively.

Numerical Aperture: BR-D .85 -vs- DVD .06

Track to track stepping is smaller than DVD, so a DVD Drive, besides the laser being wrong, would not be able to get track-to-track. The blue-violet laser's shorter wavelength makes it possible to store more information on a 12 cm disc.  The spot size for br-d is 580 nm.

I don't know who said that, or where you got that, but if it's JUST a DVD drive, there is no way you're ripping a BR-D in it...

HD-DVD laser has the same specs as the BR-D laser, however, the media and stepping track-to-track is what limits the storage to 15GG... Theoretically, a HD-DVD drive could read a BR-D, but a major firmware write would need done.  However, we have HD-DVD/BR-D Combo players...
