I have a PS3 which works perfectly, and displays through the composite cable, connected to the SCART socket on my LCD TV with no problem at all; but I get absolutely nothing through the new HDMI cable which I've just bought.
I have two 60GB PS3s, two LCD TVs and two HDMI cables; I have tried all combinations and it would seem that only the one PS3 is at fault.
PS3-1 -> LCD-1 -> HDMI-1 - Picture
PS3-1 -> LCD-1 -> HDMI-2 - Picture
PS3-1 -> LCD-2 -> HDMI-1 - Picture
PS3-1 -> LCD-2 -> HDMI-2 - Picture
PS3-2 -> LCD-1 -> HDMI-1 - No Picture
PS3-2 -> LCD-1 -> HDMI-2 - No Picture
PS3-2 -> LCD-2 -> HDMI-1 - No Picture
PS3-2 -> LCD-2 -> HDMI-2 - No Picture
You get the general idea xD
I have looked at the HDMI socket on the back of the PS3, it does not seem to be bent or loose when the cable is plugged in. I have even tried the Hard-Reset on the 'faulty' PS3 but still nothing... Could there be anything that I've missed or not checked?
Anyone know the problem or even better know anyway to solve it?! ![]()

You have to set it up for HDMI before it gets displayed. Turn the PS3 off and when you turn it on keep your finger on the power button for around 5 seconds until you hear another beep noise. It restores the display settings to factory default. Unless this is what you meant by the hard reset, if so and it failed to work I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Yeah, that's what I meant by hard reset. ![]()
I've taken most of the console apart, and checked the back panel, there doesn't seem to be any obvious damage inside; although I haven't been able to completely take the metal chassis apart. (too scared lol)
I shall have to dig deeper and have a closer look at the motherboard.

When you repaired it did you do a full reconstruction of it or just replace a part that was needed?

I made one good out of two units; one would not turn on at all; no lights nothing; the other would not read any discs; so I swapped out the Blu-Ray drive and the casing (was damaged).
Now I'm thinking about it, I can't honestly remember if I had it connected by composite or HDMI ...
Really frustrating now ... I don't suppose that fw2.50 would make any effect to resetting the display (holding the power button till the second bleep; but let go before the double bleep)?!

I may need backing up on this just to confirm from somebody who can 100% verify it but I think the Blu-Ray drives are paired to the motherboard. To double check this try sending a PM to Powerslave and he'll give you an answer for that and probably the solution for the HDMI problem. Have you had the PS3 working on other cables, preferably component?
Offline
Ok, I shall send him a PM.
I've not been able to test it connected by component cable as I don't have access to a cable. Is the component cable attached to the same socket as the composite cable? (I know that's a stupid question) I may have to pick one up and test it out.

Yes it is. When replacing parts did you have a fully working motherboard with working HDMI?

You cannot use a BR-D from another console, they are keyed to the console.
If your BR-D drive had a laser or mechanical failure, you need to use your original logic-board on the replacement drive.

Would it be somehow affecting HDMI?
It may just simply be holding up the boot process of the PS3 with that specific drive in it. An IDE failure can hold the bus, so it's stuck there at post with the drive... This is all done before boot, so no, there would be no display since it's hanging at the drive, probably at the request or init phase. If he puts his drive back in, and it boots, well, there ya go. That also means the drive he wanted to use is worse off than his.

pirate from ps3hax has said the ps3 will boot without the bd drive in.
Then he needs to remove it, and try again...

The ps3 WILL boot WITHOUT the ps3 drive in. But if you use anothers ps3s BR-D in a different PS3 then it may not work. But I have booted my ps3 without the drive in. I have also removed the drive while the ps3 is on and it never froze or anything. Then reconnected it and it acted as if it had never been removed. But the ps3 WILL boot without the drive in.

1st off, either way, he has two systems he isn't going to get working.
If he removes the drives from the one that's not booting, then he knows it's the drive that is holding it up in post.

What?!
... Okay, now I'm really confused ... Are we still on the same subject??
The repaired PS3 has been working quite happily for about 2 months everything works perfectly; PS3 games (R1 & R2), Blu-Ray films, PS1/2 games, DVDs; but I have been using it through a composite cable due to having an older TV (SCART only) in the bedroom; I have just recently bought a LCD TV and an HDMI cable hoping to get a clearer picture... and nothing is displayed.
I cannot for the life of me remember if I had the PS3 connected to HDMI or composite on my LCD TV in the front room when I was testing it.
Incidentally; I did strip the board right down to bare essentials and tried composite; worked fine. Tried HDMI; nothing.

ah i thought your where talking about pirate trying it again not studioeng, my bad. and back on subject. sounds like you hve a bum hdmi port. theres no need to even do a hard rest when you plug hdmi in. it auto detects and will show up on screen

It never auto-detects HDMI for me. It only detects which connection is being used first or when you reset, but if you unplug one typle and plug in the HDMI or anything else then you need to be in settings on the test timer.
Studieng, as mick said it's probably just the port. Might be difficult to find a replacement one on it's own though!

Well I've ordered a component cable. I will give that a test when it arrives.
If I can get a nice crisp picture with that then I'll be happy.

Offline
Should be great, component works better on my TV than HDMI and actually looks miles better!

I got the component cable through; it worked but it ghosted quite a lot at higher resolutions.
So I went into Game, bought a Game branded cable and it works perfectly at 1080i.
So it would appear that the HDMI port is knackered.

Offline
Careful with Game's own cable lol, I have it and if I touch them the colour goes and it appears all light green or something until I twist and move them around.
