A what?  up-conversation or up-conversion?? Up-conversation makes no sense, you have to mean up-conversion. 

The Optical drive itself plays no part in actual video output, it just provides the pipeline for data to be retrieved from.

Either way, that would be no, as having an UPCONVERSATION with the drive is not possible, I can't speak digital myself, dunno about you, Hee hee hee.

The PS3 has a great Blu-Ray multi-format drive, very close to, or is already a second generation drive. The problem is, the PS3 does not have a scaler chip like the xbox360 does for upconversion of video, both game and movie, so with the PS3 some games actually fall back in resolution.  Movie playback, however, will run in what the format is on the disc if you have a TV to support it.  It will run in the highest resolution your TV has, for movies on BLUE-RAY discs.  Regular DVD movies cannot be upconverted becuase there is no hardware to handle it in the PS3.  You will get 480p out of it at the very least.  You can buy a Samsung DVD player that upconverts, I have had one for two years now. 

The only way to go from here, was that new LG drive, that has all formats that the PS3's drive has to offer, plus HD-DVD; BUT, the drawback was you could only play the main title (movie) on the HD-DVD disc, no menu or options come up.  That project has been dropped till they get it to work the way it is supposed to.  This is just information, not that it would have worked in the PS3.

After weighing all this information, and so on, rather than pay 200.00 for the Xbox's External drive, and with the RUMOR ov V2 xbox, I bought the PS3 instead.  I still have my Xbox360, I was quite impressed with the PS3 though.  I should have gotten the 20Gb model, since the HDD can be eadily upgraded. . .  But, I settle for nothing but the best.
