Hi everyone.
I'm thinking of getting a bigger HDD for my PS3.
Can any one tell me if there is a limit to the storage capacity I can go to.
I saw a video on youtube on how to change your drive and the host mentioned you can go upto 250GB........is this true cause i've seen a Western Digital HDD which is 350GB.
Am I ok to use this bigger drive or will it cause any problems.
Thanks

Is it a 2.5" Sata II with 5,400 rpm? If so, and the PS3 uses 2.5" Sata II with 5,400 rpm, what do you reckon the answer will be?
Try using the search feature, you will find that 2.5" Sata II HDDs goto 500 GB.

i think the maximum is 500gb at the moment, i know hitachi do 500gb 2.5" sata hard drives.

But no one wants that

IT IS NOT a SATA II controller in the PS3, but you can use a SATA II drive. The specs say it is a SATA I chipset.

SATA II is backwards compatible with SATA I though isn't it?!

That's what I said:

Sata II is a 300-vs-150 transfer rate with Sata I.

Yes, it was a rhetorical question lol. Why state that it's not a SATA II chipset in the PS3 as if to prove someone wrong when nobody claimed that it was?!

bit of a late follow-up question...
Can anyone confirm the PS3's SATA controller chipset? "Sara" at Sony consumer services hotline was most unhelpful when I asked. The most she could guarantee was that any 2.5" SATA hard drive would "just work" if plugged into the PS3. I have a couple of problems with Sara's assertion.
When the SATA-IO (previously SATA-II) working group released the SATA/300 specification, they described auto-negotiation between a controller and device of differing SATA specs. Basically, this boils down to forward compatibility for SATA/150 chipsets controlling SATA/300-capable disks and backward compatibility for SATA/300 chipsets controlling SATA/150 disks. The auto-negotiation between controller and drive just allows the SATA/300 component to run at half speed. The problem was that when the SATA/300 spec was released (2004) some SATA/150 controllers already in the marketplace did not support speed auto-negotiation. Some pertinent examples of this design flaw are mentioned in the SATA wikipedia article.
Say the PS3 SATA controller conforms to the SATA/300 spec; awesome... 300Gb/s maximum sustained throughput, guaranteed to work seamlessly with that SATA/300 drive I just bought, and capable of auto-negotiating down to 1.5 Gb/s if I want to use a slower SATA/150 drive.
What if the PS3 SATA controller is only SATA/150? Well, it will work with a SATA/150 disk, and it /should/ be able to auto-negotiate with a SATA/300 disk.
"Should"... that's the part that has me worried.
If I knew what SATA controller was in the PS3, I'd know what I was dealing with. Has anyone taken a look at this thing? Has anyone been able to confirm the controller's spec?

Sony has revealed quite some more details of the upcoming PS3. Here they are:
- PS3 will be the first Next-Gen console with the HDMI video interface.
- All the PS3 games will be on the Blu-ray disc for anti-piracy purpose.
- The development machine and development kit is now finished.
- The network service of the PS3 will basically be free, and will be deployed with the release of the console.
- The CELL processor will be able to implement the 4th dimension (the time?
- PS3 will come with a 2.5' 60G HDD as a standard specification.
- The OS of the PS3 will be Linux.
- The network service of the PS3 will be in co-operation with GameSpy.
- PS/PS2 games will be fully supported, plus with much better resolution.
- Sony will be replenishing the market with 1 million PS3 per month after the release.
