So I got a 80Gig PS3 from a friend of mine who said it is broken and bought a new one. he had already opened it to try and fix it so there is no warranty anymore. Basically when I push a disc in the drive does nothing, it won't take the disc on or anything. If I have the system in satnd-by with the red light on and push the disc in far enough it will turn the system on, but won't take the game. I opened it up and to the drive apart to re-align everything, thinking it might be the problem, nut still no luck and now it won't eject the cd either. When I psh the eject button I get 3 beeps and then nothing happens. Also the blue drive light does not come on at all. I am thinking that the PS3 is not detecting that there is a cd in it or when I try to put one in it. Anyone have any idea's on a fix?

Motor is broken. Rather than opening it and then giving up and buying a new one your friend should have had Sony replace it or he should have taken it to the store he got it at, then he wouldn't have wasted money. You could try buying a new motor and replacing it but it would be much easier to replace the drive itself altogether. You should find one on eBay.

Thanks, could it be the little sensor on the front of the drive thats bad? Also I heard that you can not just replace the drive with another one because they are married to the mother board or something. Is that true? Also I have the drive in the loaded position with a cd in it. Any ideas on why it isn't detecting the disc that is already in it?

you will have to transfer the circuit board. the wires on that sensor arint broken or bent to much or something in the way blocking it? also if u have a multi meter check to see if the motor gets electricity at any time and if it does and dosent turn over then it would be the motor. if you dont have one u can bring the ps3 into a electronic repair shop and ask them to jus test the motor. prolly wont cost more then 10 bucks.

I tested the connector the plugs into the bottom of the drive and there is power there. I turned the ps3 on with the case open and nothing at all moves inside. I thought usually when you turn a system on the drive does a check to see if there is a disk in it, but the laser doesn't come on or anything. I think that the board under the drive might be bad. I just have to check if i have the same version as what they sell. Does that sound like it could be the problem?

Mick, another thing i forgot to mention is that it seems when my friend opened up the system to try and fix it, he broke the click on the motherboard that holds the ribbon cable in that comes from the drive. I read somewhere that, that cable also has power and a bunch of other stuff that go to and from the drive. Could that maybe be the reason that the drive doesnt do anything? I put the cable in and piece of electrical tape to try and hold it in, but that click pushes down on the cable to make it contact, right?

It can't be doing it any good but you said it wasn't working before he broke that. in the first post you said the drive won't take a disc, that will be because you have one in there already....unless you forced it in?! When you turn the PS3 on you will hear only a small noise come from the drive as the blue light flashes (if there is a disc in). Is the blue light on when you turn the PS3 on or does it stay off permanently even with the disc stuck inside?

Yes the PS3 wasn't working before my friend took it apart. I don't remember what he said the problem was, but he took it apart and when I took it apart to check everything out I noticed that the clip that holds the ribbon cable to the motherboard was broken. When I got the play station from him, it was not accepting any discs. I took the drive a part because I wanted to make sure that it was aligned properly thinking that might be why it was not taking the disc. In order to re-align the drive you have to use a disc, which is why there is one in there now. So the disc is not stuck in there because I forced it, it is in the drive correctly and the 2 pieces in the front of the drive are up preventing another disc from being put in. There is no noise from the drive when I turn the system on and the blue light does not come on at all.

I followed this tut to re-align the drive.

Nope. It still does not have the blue light or make a sound when I turn it on. The only difference is not the disc I used to re-align the drive is stuck in it. If I push the eject button I get 3 beeps and nothing happens. I read that, that means the PS is not recognizing there is a disc in it. If the PS was not recognizing a drive in it then wouldn't I get an error message?

Seems like the sensor and the motor then as you should hear that motor very faintly when you switch on. The warranty void seal on the bottom (left side when horizontal), you still have that? In the UK you'd get away with a replacement as they do a doorstep swap but in North America I'm pretty sure you send it off to Sony. Your best bet if you have the sticker is make it look as best as you can. If you don't then I'd say take your chances anyway.
Offline
Yea. I don't have the sticker. It was already off when my friend gave it to me. I can still send it back to Sony, but they charge $150 to fix them if they are not under warranty.
Offline
lol over here Sony would just see the missing sticker but just repair it anyway. Luckily I got me an additional 12 months on my warranty because they messed up! Best bet is eBay. See if you can get a used PS3 as spares as that would be cheaper than a new drive alone. Or go for the drive alone used and the board with it.

Yea. I actually found a 60gig motherboard and blu-ray controller board from the same system for like $50 on ebay. So I might buy that and see if it fixes it. I did actually call Sony because I went to do and update and it wouldn't update and just got stuck on the installing screen and has no cancel or anything. Even after I restart and turn power off, it only tries to re-install the update. So basically they said even though it's out or warranty they can replace the whole system for $150. I just have to decide what I want to do.

if your friends problems before he took it apart and broke the connection where the same as now then the connection is prolly not the problem but if the ps3 acknowledged anything about the the disk before he took it apart then its most likely that connection. also one thing i forgot to ask b4, did he ever have the swap switch installed? if so that has been know to burn out the drives.
Offline
I believe that it was the same problem. He had told me that something wasn't lined up right and it wouldn't read the disc. And No I do not believe that he had the swap switch as there is no switch that I can see any where or holes in the case.

I have another quick question. If I were to buy a 40g motherboard and disc controller, would that work in the 60g case with the 4 usb ports? Obviously it wouldn't be backwards compatible, but still.
Offline
I would say it would only support two of the USB ports but everything else would be fine, apart from the obvious stuff like emulation like you said. Sony have changed the ports on the back of the 40GB about a bit across different models so make sure they match if you do get a 40GB's motherboard.
Offline
Cool, thanks for the info. I still think I am just going to pay the $150 to Sony and get a replacement if I can't find a working motherboard and drive controller for a 60Gb. The same would go if I put an 80gb as well, except everything from that should work, cuz they are more or less the same, right?
Offline
I think the way the 60GB and 80GB models emulate is different, but I think that's the only major difference.

Cool. Sounds good. I have found a few broken ones online, where the people say they don't get a red light when they flick the switch in the back or its missing the hdd or something. So I might just buy one of those for cheap and try to fix it myself
