USB modification to PS3

Would it be possible to have a USB port at the back of the PS3 by having a thin cable run from inside the PS3 and out of the vents at the back with a female USB port at the end? I'm sick of having to juggle USB cables to the front two ports on my 40GB PS3 and don't like having a USB cable always hanging from the PS3 and getting in the way. What would I need to do to do this and make it as discreet as possible at the back (I'm not a fan of modding...not on my own machines anyway, I like them as they were intended lol)?

Re: USB modification to PS3

I can picture roughly how to do it, just wanted to get some feedback and ideas. Soldering is a no-no with me because I haven't done it since I was 14. I'd like it if the cable was hard to see or could be detached on like a small socket. I really don't want a cable coming out of the back or the hassle of taking it all out with effort if the console needs replacing. Voiding the warranty is ok as Sony swap at the doorstep and won't know until I have the new console. I really don't want to do any mod unless it's a last resort, this is my 8th or 9th PS3 because Sony kept sending me the wrong model number and now I have the correct one it was the last one ever from Sony and I can say there's only a couple of others newer than this one.

I have seen inside the console and know roughly where everything is. It means I can connect a powered hub behind and leave stuff plugged in and only use the two front ports if I really need to. Still reluctant to do it though lol!

Re: USB modification to PS3

Yeah i remember the guide on how to do it, you do however loose the port you link from on the front. Your simply moving the port rather than adding one to the back.

Re: USB modification to PS3

This was asked before, and there is a link somewhere, but you have to take one from the front and move it to the back.  Or, you can just use a HUB and put it behind the PS3...  There is no USB connection or header on the mainboard to be placed in the back, you HAVE to relocate one of your front ports.

Re: USB modification to PS3

Is there any possible way to like sacrifice a hub rather than the front port? Like (just an example) have the front USB moved to the back and then one port from a connected hub moved back to the front....possibly without that much messing about?

EDIT:- I have a wireless Apple keyboard on the way so that kind of helps!
EDIT EDIT:- ...and a Time Capsule which helps greatly!

Re: USB modification to PS3

you can try following the traces from the usb on the board and see it theres any place you can solder to on them (this wire would go to the hub as the source) then cut the trace between ur solder point and the usb then solder 4 more wires to the actual pins on the usb (this wire would go to one of the 4 ports of ur hub) if you can take a picture or find a good one on the net of both the top and the bottom of your ps3 motherboard model ill see if i can find the spot to solder too. hopefully the usb traces are on the top or bottom layer of the pcb and not sandwiched in one of the middle layers. the usb chip may even support more then 2 usb ports making you job a little easyer.

edit: i remebererd this site someone came by here with i think and it had amazing details on all the ps3 motherboards. im looking for this site now and if someone knows b4 i update please post
