After buying my 60gig PS3 and enjoying it, the PS3's BR drive stopped responding. This happened almost 7 months after the purchase. How this happened: I was playing NBA Live 08 and then, in the middle of a match, the game froze. The PS Button wasn't responding, neither was the "On/Off" sensor button. I ended up turning it off with the good ole switch in the back. When turning it back on, I realized it wasn't reading any kind of disk.
Anyways, after browsing around, it turns out I'm not the only one to whom this has happened. Actually there was alot of people suffering from this. Sony said it will repair it and send it back. But, unlucky as I am, the receipt was misplaced! To repair it without the warranty, it's about 200$, I believe. I'm currently broke and don't have any money to spare on gaming.
So, the question is: Has anyone here ever resolved this manually with success? By taking it apart or something...
Thanks in advance.

That's why I put my receipts in the empty boxes, then put them in a cupboard. Hell, I laminated my PS3 receipt... I got a 2-year warranty, which is up this November...
If it won't read DVD, or Audio, then you got a serious problem, and can only be repaired. I thought there was someone out there replacing BR-Ds for PS3s, not sure, but they have to be just as bad to replace, if not worse, than Xbox360 DVD drives. You'll have to look around.

turning off the ps3 through the switch is why that happened... its basically like pulling the plug while its still on that switch is the power cut off... if your ps3 gets stuck just hold the power button on the system for like 5 to 10 sec it will beep and eventually turn off... always turn off the system manually before hitting the switch in the back... and its 150 this happened to my friend about a month ago though his didnt freeze he just always turns it off by the switch in the back while the games are running. SO TO ALL PS3 USERS DO NOT TURN THE SYSTEM OFF WITH THE SWITCH IN THE BACK IF THE PS3 IS STILL ON! or it will ruin your br drive!!!!

WTF didn't he read the "TURN OFF SYSTEM" option.
Jesus, that's just plain stupid.

Greetings all,
first post here, although I've been a avid reader for some time now...Must say it's a great site..
Now, for the problem above, my brotherinlaw had a similar problem, his Ps3 stopped reading any sort of disk's too. He too had lost his receipt and Sony here in Denmark charges a whopping 500$ to replace the drive, so I had a go at it. My thesis were that the lens most likely were dirty, so I took apart the Ps3 and cleaned the lens.
However, that is quite a delicate operation, but despite my lack of experience in this particular field, it worked out. I would be happy to post some links to videos of how to take apart the whole thing, if you're interested.
Do your drive spin the disk, or is it not reacting at all? If it spins then this might solve the problem, given you or somebody you know, are willing to have a go at it....

I've always turned off with the switch at the back with PS2 and on PS3....though I exit the game on the PS3 first before switching off. I'm pretty sure Sony made the option available on purpose.

@ghettoc401
First off, taking apart your Ps3 will void your warrenty...
Here's a couple of video tutorials, I suggest you watch them carefully before you go ahead...Removing the drive itself is straight forward, but going inside the drive you have to be very carefull, there's lots of little shananigans and whatnot, that can cause you more than a little share of grief...
Here's a vid showing how to take the Ps3 apart:

And here's one that shows the cleaning itself:

Yea I pretty much have the same problem. My drive will not respond at all and I have a disc stuck in there now. I kind of lucked out because I went to do an update and the system won't do anything. It won't finish the update or go back to the xmb. So I called Sony and they said that they can replace the whole system for $150.
