The worst day of my life - 29-07-08

My ps3 is situated under my PC desk, its been there a good while now and my tele is above it. For days my brother has been placing his glass of water/juice/tea next to the tele to which i kept telling him, move it or you will knock it over and ruing my ps3. To which i got "No i wont, its OK". However...!

Whilst laying in bed this fine morning, i was contemplating with going on bad company to get my 3 remaining head shots for a wild card or going on my DS for abit.

Then it happened..., "Tink" i knew exactly what it was straight away. My brother had knocked the glass of water over, right over the TOP of the ps3, it went all over the place. I immediately jumped out of bed and pulled the power lead out, and soaked the water up with a towel. Immediately i thought of someone from this forum who had their ps3 stolen and it got dropped outside for a day or two in the rain (cant remember who it was) and they said there ps3 worked fine afterwards.

I turned it upside down to let the water flow out (not alot came out tbh). I then sat there for the rest of the day with a hairdryer and a towel making sure it was dry inside. whilst shitting my pants it would work.. how was i going to explain to my beloved that the most expensive thing shes bought me was just soaked in water!

So, after more drying (a good 12 hours maybe) and ensuring the hard drive didn't get soaked (which it never) i finally turned it back on, to which it worked perfectly. I let it run bad company till it started to kick out quite a bit of hot air but its still fine. My main worries were the blue ray drive as it did seem to be all around it.

Previous to all this the same brother did blow up his PC by spilling a glass of water in that too!

So, is the ps3 really quite robust providing you know how water and electronics work?

Re: The worst day of my life - 29-07-08

The PS3 still works so I wouldn't call it the worst day ever.

Odds are that water did not get to the electric components it would have fried being plugged in if it had.

You are damn lucky.

Re: The worst day of my life - 29-07-08

Yeah that's why i pulled the plug straight away. You can submerge any electrical component in water providing there is no power to it and it will work fine once dried out.

Normally i have the worst luck ever so yeah, its good luck to me. Now i just have to spend the rest of my life with none ahahha.

Lol man you really are lucky. Did you know that the hairdryer could have fraked up the Ps3 more? Or I think so...

But I remember a guy once dropped his PSP in a glassful of beer. He opened it and dried it and after a day he turned it on. It worked for a few hours then it just stopped turning on.

The hair dryer was blowing cool air. not hot or warm. Otherwise it would of no doubt melted something.

Smart thing, disconnecting the power to it as fast as you did. You got lucky, really. Happy to hear your console still works, though.

i'd do the same immedently unplug it and let water run out. if it didnt work i'd be kicking my Brothers A$$ till it blead!. i dont allow drinks or any other type of liquid near it. if they wont move it i will and it will be down the drain. if he gets mad i yell. Deal With it !

We'll i'm glad it still works. Playstation Rocks !

If it didn't work, which I know it is because you're online now lol, but your brother's wallet should have to open and a large figure to come out of it.

Re: The worst day of my life - 29-07-08

I had something similar happen to my old laptop.........however I was not so lucky.

I was drinking beer and had it sitting next to my laptop. Was kinda drunk, tried to pick it up, and spilled the beer right on top of it. I was so pissed at myself and from that moment on any drinks were not placed by my laptop. I had to spend $800 on a new one. Managed to salvage the DVD burner and the RAM and ended up trading to a friend for a decent graphics card.

What about the hard drive? And other parts like the screen, keyboard and palm rest you could have sold on eBay with a bit extra in the price for the good smell!

dam man. i had a similar thing happen to my old laptop. had it sitting on a table and on the counter right beside the table was the blue water cooler. well one night i left the laptop on the table and when i came out in the morning the laptop was sitting in 1 cm of water, off. i was scared and pissed shitless. i took the laptop and draind the water outa it then opend it a bit and stood it up like a A with 4 blowdryers all blowing cold into the vents. after a good 10 minutes i tested it out and it turned on!!! i imedetly turnd it off and pulled the power. i left it there for another hour and when my mom came home needing the laptop. i said no its drying and i explained it to her. told her she would have to walk next door and use her sisters comp to check her email. low and behold the lazy women grabs the laptop turns it on and fries it as soon as i leave the room. thank god for warrintys. "umm sir i dont know what happened it jus didint turn on oneday. oh dont mind the water damaged stickers or paint that somehow started to peel off the metal ram cover. jus send it in and fix it."

Re: The worst day of my life - 29-07-08

It was in standby mode, i just whipped the power plug out.

Being a technician you just know these things about electrical equipment.

Yeah, if it was knackered, he would of been buying another 60gb model if the warranty wouldn't cover it (or i couldn't get away with it).

Yeah, to spill a drink in a laptop is really bad because the keyboard doesn't have a rubber backing, its just placed straight over the mobo. It instantly reaches the mobo and boom.

I did tell him to move the drink about 10 times over the week (it was weird because id told him that many times that he actually still did it, as if it was meant to happen you know?). Next time il take the advice and pour it out smile.

I kept the HDD but now I can't find it. Was trying to recently because it will fit in my 360 HDD I think. The screen was damaged from something else so I couldn't sell it.

-e-

HA just found the HDD. Looked in a place I never thought to look in.
I also kept the battery because I bought the same model but a year newer HP pavilion. Batteries are damn expensive.

So, you mean when you encounter a problem in your laptop, you put it in a water cooler? Or you drained it in a water cooler? I should know what is the true that's why of I had a problem also regarding with my laptop, I should know what to do. Thank you!

Re: The worst day of my life - 29-07-08

This is why my kids are FORBIDDEN to take liquids anywhere near electrical devices.   They aren't even allowed to have drinks on the PC desk, period.  I would have said MOVE it, or you will pay for the damage you may cause my PS3.  I don't even let the opportunity for that to arise.   If I see them on the PC, and there is a drink on the desk, they're DONE with the PC for the day...

I see your point powerslave, but you cant always watch over someone telling them do this do that, my brother is old enough to know whats right and wrong, and clearly his attitude at that time was "he knew best" which was wrong. However, he hasn't done it again smile
