How to play MKV content on PlayStation 3 (M2TS)
Introduction & Requirements:
Step 1: Download TsMuxer from the link and extract all the files to a folder using WinRAR.
The PlayStation 3 (PS3) console does not support the MKV / Matroska container, but it will support much of the audio and video that can be stored in the MKV container. This guide assumes that the video and audio of your MKV file are H.264 / AVC and AC3 audio. For the record, DTS audio will work with this process.
TsMuxer:
http://www.smlabs.net/tsMuxer/tsMuxeR_1.8.4(b).zip
Winrar: Optional
http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar38b3.exe
Step 2:Open TsMuxerGUI.exe
After you have extracted all the files from WinRAR to a folder, run the TsMuxerGUI.exe file. This program is not very complicated at all but what it achieves is ground breaking for PS3 video. This process used to take quite a while, but TsMuxer automates nearly the entire process now.
Anyway, let's get on with it. Make sure you are in the Input tab. Look at the blank Input files field, click the Add button beside this.
tsMuxer Interface
Step 3: Open MKV file
Browse through your Hard Disk Drive for the folder that contains the MKV file that you want to play on the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console. Double-click it when you find it.
TsMuxer will now take a moment to analyze the file before it shows you any streams.
Open MKV File
Step 4: Check Stream Information
If the MKV file was opened successfully, you should now be able to see the type of streams that you have in your MKV file. In mine, I have H.264 / AVC video (1280 x 720) running at 23.976fps (click to enlarge picture) and AC3 5.1 audio, very nice.
However, there is a problem. Look closely at the track info for my video. It says..
Profile: High@5.1
This is not good because the PS3 only supports up to Level 4.1, not 5.1. However, the fix for this is easy and built right into the tsMuxer program.
MKV stream information
Step 5: Change AVC video to Level 4.1
Select the AVC stream that is set to Level 5.1 (if you have 4.1 or lower, skip this step) and you will see the options before the Tracks list changes (check my picture, click to enlarge).
Beside the Change Level option is a box. Click it and a green tick will appear. Now click the drop-down box and select 4.1 from the list. This should ensure that the video will play correctly.
Change AVC video to Level 4.1
Step 6: Set to M2TS Muxing
By default, tsMuxer is set to TS Muxing, which won't work for this process. Simply select the M2TS muxing option as I have done in my picture (click to enlarge). The option is located under Output.
You also can now choose where to save the new M2TS file if you wish, although the default will be the same folder and filename as the original MKV, but with a .m2ts extension. This is usually fine.
When you have done all of the above, click the Start Muxing button.
Output = m2TS Muxing
Step 7: The Process
How long this process will take depends on the length of the original MKV file, and of course, it's file size. Hope that there will be no errors!

Finally
I hope this short article will bring some new multimedia life to your PlayStation 3 (PS3) console.

Use this, much simpler, and faster. 2 clicks and you're done.
It also RE-Codes some files as they wont play, now I disabled encoding and they still played fine.
Take's about 20 minutes to extract the file.

.VOB and other MPEG 2 files have a 720p resolution limit.

thanks, will use if i get a 1080p tv. for now i just use mkv2vob
Offline
i hve 1080p tv and i just use mkv2vob so im losing quality?! NO!! :'( but i really dont lwanna go through the hassle of making sure my video is H.264 / AVC and AC3 audio

Offline
What hassle? tsMuxer gives you that info when you open your mkv

Great guide thank you, so once the file has been extracted and code, just burn it as a data file on a DVD i take it? I have a 40G PS3 so I dont have much space to save movies.Again thank you for the easy to follow guide.

the latest mkvtovob is a much easier/hassle free way to do this now.

Yeah there is MKV2VOB, which is VERY SIMPLE, as is GotSent...

This cant be true I been using MKVtoVOB for 2 months now and have never noticed and loss in video or audio quilty using it. Nice Tutorial though your method seems a lot longer then using MKVtoVOB

It was an older post anyway, pay attention people

MKV2VOB, the name of the program is now misleading. It used to only make VOB files, and they had the resolution limit... This was OLDER versions, but now, it does MPEG H.264 which do not have the 720p limit... I talked about this before, and I was told a .VOB file has a 720p limit. I am talking files with a .VOB extension, not .MPG or .MPEG extensions.
Also, this software also has NO loss if video quality from an MKV as there is no TRANSCODING, it just extracts. What i don't like is DTS tracks are converted to AC3. I have a DTS receiver, so that's too bad for me, but, it works great otherwise. There was another version just released last week, that fixes the audio problems I had with the previous one. It didn't even say MKV Extract this time, just DTS to AC3.... They are continually fine-tuning this program.

if the mkv's resolution is bluray compliant like 1920x1080 or 1280x720 (sadly most of them are not) i always use tsmuxer to create an bluray structure to keep the dts sound, and this way i can also add soft subs.
so for me thumbs up for tsmuxer ![]()

Has anyone solved the green bar problem when using tsmuxer? For example you have 720P .mkv and create a blu-ray structure from it, then burn it onto a dvd, when attempting to play back on the PS3 or standalone blu-ray player you get green bars taking over about 30% of the bottom of the screen
Offline
the green bars only show when your video is not bluray compliant 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720
the newer version of mkv2vob solves the green problem but it dousnt solve the main problem , video starts to write from the upper top of the screen where obviously should be an black bar.
so below the video you have like 2 black bars ![]()
only when you take out the m2ts file and just stream it or whatever the video will be in the centre of the screen.
this issue is the main reason i always look for mkv's that are true formats 1920/1080 or 1280/720.

The new version of MKV2VOB now also states at the bottom of the screen, that you must have V1.53 or better firmware to play the files it makes. Never any BARS for me, but then I just make the one .MPG file and do not make a Br-D structure for burning to disc; I have 1TB of HDD space for streaming.
Offline
it's not because you just play the MPG that you don't have bars , it's because you set your tv or the ps3 to zoom ![]()
i keep aspect ratio on tv so i see bars in any case (if source is not 16:9). and i don't burn the avchd's to dvd i put them on an usb stick and it works great ![]()

I HAVE 1080p videos with .Vod extensions made from mkvtovob, where are you still hearing of this 720p limit?
How can i make these files playable on standalone blu-ray players? Spoonfeed me, is it easy, im looking to expand my sales...

Offline
See i found this tutorial http://brothers_grim.webs.com/bd/index.html
which is ment to solve the green bars but it dident work for me ![]()

@craig
i tried that tutorial too and like you said, it is not working, but that was allready mentioned on the forum overthere.
like i said earlier, new version of mkv2vob solves the green problem if you set it to create bluray structure, even softsubs works then , but still the main problem to me is that video is not in the centre of the screen and that looks really silly to me.
i don't want an black bar (15cm) below the video.
since you don't need subs forget about the bluray structure and just play the m2ts files like you play normal video files.
the only thing you will loose is 24hz playback.
Offline
I have never got any of these green bars OR bars at the bottom only
an my ps3s aspect ratio is always on normal, i only zoom for low quality vid and the ps3 does this zooming automatically...

I have found a way of turning the files into playable discs without green bars or off center screens. I have made a tutorial on how to do it, You can check it out here http://www.ps3-hacks.com/forums/viewtop … 608#p80608
