Semptron is the LOW end of the AMD line.

If you are going to get AMD, which I am a fan of, and you are going Quad core, then the ATHLON is the one to use. You have to view the specs on the chips, the L1 CACHE is essential to CPU performance. The Semptron usually has a 4th the cache that an Athlon does. Like, an Athlon can have 512MB cache, and a Septron only 128M cache. Big difference, even if both are the same speed, the one with the 512MB cache is going to be faster.

Intel is a better name, but does not really mean that they have a superior CPU.

AMD CPUs tend to use a little more power than an Intel does, which is why the XBOX1 had an intel CPU and not an AMD. AMDs are better for gaming. M$ wanted the AMD for it's gaming characteristics, but it would generate more heat in the box, so they did not go with it.

as of right now, the core2 line that intel has is faster than AMD's x2 and phenom lines. the core2duo wolfdale chips are a dual core chip that can perform just as good in gaming and benchmarks as the phenom quad core amd processor, the only thing the phenom can visible outperform it in is big encodes of videos. the core2duo 8500 wolfdale is also a great overclocker if that is what you want, it can do 4.5ghz on air cooling alone. AMD's new quad cores are not good at all at overclocking. If you want something that can really do something, a core2quad is the way to go.

AMD are supposed to be much much easier to overclock it that affects you any. Plus they are usually cheaper...I think.
