Linux?

I'm currently downloading a 3.71gb Linux YD installation iso. I was browsing and reading more about the Linux OS on the PS3, and now I'm not sure which one to install. I've been hearing that Ubuntu is a really good choice. I'm not even sure why I want to install Linux on the PS3 (maybe because it's cool!). Anyways, I guess I want it for the emulators and other customizations. Any YDL and Ubuntu users want to recommend or suggest something?

And another small question: I have a 60gb PS3, so how much should I format to the other OS? Sony made it really stupid with the choices there. Will 10gb be enough for YDL (I mean not just the installation, but the emulators and such) or will 10gb be enough for the PS3's game OS and other files (seems kind of small.) neutral

Thanks in advance.

Re: Linux?

You should stay to YDL, because its suited best for PS3.
I have tried Gentoo, because of YDL doesn't support 480p.
Its hard to install Gentoo, because the new kernel doesn't go together with the old otheros.bld and needs a custom configuration.
Ubuntu is a Linuxed-Based windows, easy to use for M$ users.
I feel really disappointed because PS3 doesn't allow us to have a 20GB or a 100GB for Linux partition... dunno why, must be something with the 4GB limit. So i guess it will be ok 10GB for Linux.
But i download more demos them i buy games(i have only one full game and about 10 demos) and i need more space for GameOS. That means  - 1) you download games - 10GB to OtherOS 2) you don't download games - 10GB to GameOS.
YDL has a small instalation for 10GB and should be enough for emulators.
I think Ubuntu can be installed on 480p, but thats not a problem if you have a HDTV.

Re: Linux?

Yellow Dog will be the best to use and definately select 10GB for the Linux install, PS3 should have more space because it's far more important!

I'm using YDL on my PS3 as my main computer at the moment and just plug in an external hard drive, but 10GB is definately enough for the OS and any applications and emulators you may want.

Re: Linux?

YDL is "the official Linux of the PS3", so it will probably have better support for things like Bluetooth, the Sixaxis, etc.

As for the partition, 10GB is enough. It will leave you with about 4.8GB on the partition after install. Kinda small, but YDL allows for the interaction between it and your Windows computer, so everything I need, I can grab from my PC. smile

Re: Linux?

Thanks for the replies. Anyways, I successfully installed YDL 6.0. Having a few problems with the Wifi setup tho.  Also, sometimes everything seems to load so slow... Ex. I click on Firefox and it begins to open only after about 7-10 secs. And then there's this resolution/display problem: It doesn't display fullscreen. I set it up for 1080p (not sure if my TV is 1080p or 1080i, I think it supports both.) The YDL display is not stretched to my TV's display, hence I see black borders.
