Is there a software emulation or hack or something to make the 40gb ps3 backwards compatible with ps2 games? I read somewhere that ps3 CAN make it backwards compatible but they just dont want to make the 40gb model backwards compatible

No. Not possible.
Sony could implement it. But, there is no hack that could do that for you.

They use hardware to emulate ps3. the 40gb is missing all components so it would have to be total software. maybe down the road, it will be possible, I see rsx being open and emulation happening under linux.

i thought the 80gb uses spftware emulation.

The 80GB is kinda half and half. It has the ps2 GPU but not the CPU (if i'm not mistaken)

Oh ok, i heard that they are going to have ps2 games on the psn soon.

PS3 60GB NTSC uses Hardware emulation.
PS3 60GB PAL uses Software emulation, but the 80GB uses Software emulation.
(I think)
Anyway, this is possible, but not now!
If there is a limit to 4GB's, then its possible to run some games(after there will be a Homebre: PS2 Emulator)

yeah im waitin for that, i wanna play final fantasy 10 so bad

I suggest shelling out a couple dollars for a Playstation Two, if you got a 40 Gigabyte Playstation Three.

When that screen appears: Press the Playstation button in the center of the stock Sony wireless controller that came with the system.
The controller has to be reinitialized for Playstation 2 games.

Why is that?

when you run a ps2 game the controller turns off(or de-sync from the ps3) when the ps3 enters "ps2 mode"
and you need to turn it on(or re-sync to the ps3) in "ps2 mode"

Ok, forgive my stupidity, but if the 60 and 80gb's use software emulation, is it not feasible to just take the PS3 hd and use it to overwrite a 40? or for that matter, put in like a 750gb hd, copy the 80 gb to it, and play away? I just don't have enough connections on the back of my tv for all the different gaming systems anymore! BC would be nice.

I can forgive some Stupidity... It is NOT 100% software PS2 emulation, why? The EE chip (PS2 CPU) is still in the BwC units. All the new units, with no PS2 BwC, have no PS2 hardware at all, thus no emulation. You should know how to research these things, not only that, this information is all over this forum; HARDWARE section, were I break down EVERY PS3 model! You really, REALLY should read it!

You mean the GS is still in BwC units, well the American 80 gb with 4 usb and the eu 60 and 80 not the us 20 and 60 as they have both.

umm, yeah, I DO know how to research these things, that's what I've been doing, but there is so much conflicting information (even on this site), and so many people talking like they know their stuff, I thought I would ASK. I mean, that's the whole point of this site, right? I had spent about 2 hours pouring through different sites saying this and that, so I'm sorry I didn't find your world-famous PS3 breakdown guide, "ruler of all". How about you stop being such a Frakkin'' nerd, get out of your parents basement for a while and loosen up a little? Dick.

There is no contradicting information in my PS3 Specifications page. It lists each model, and what it is. There is no PS2 emulation for ANY PS3 ANYMORE, and there is no way to MAKE it BwC. Hardware information and discussions not withstanding, the basic knowledge is, and should be; no more BwC, period.

Ive heard, but its probably not true that sony plans to release an update toward the end of this year, that it will implement backward compatibility to play most ps2 games. But its just a rumor dont hold me to it, or grt your hopes up, but it would be awesome. I have about 75 ps2 games and all kinds of accesories for it and im probably going to trade everything in to gamestop because I just dont play any of it anymore. Ps3 is awesome.
