PS3 repairs

PS3 will not power on.  Does anyone have any ideas what to look at first or have any diagrams or drawings.

Re: PS3 repairs

To my knowing there is no diagram of the psu of the ps3. Can you tell us what happened though when it went though just so we can avoid the same problem?

Re: PS3 repairs

I'm the tech guys for consoles at the store that I work, you most likely got a burnt out power supply, check for solders that have burnt away and resolder them if they have melted. If you can't find one buy a new power supply as this is the most common case for the consoles not turning on. Otherwise it is most likely a burnt out fuse or componet on the motherboard. In which this case there are many. Get a multimeter check every componet they should all hop around in numbers but if it stays one you found the dead source. Anyways, good luck man you've got a lot of checking to do. Find the dead componet take a picture and post it I will idenify which replacement part u need. And also only use 15 watt soldering iron on motherboard for safety.

Proud owner of  PS3, A PSP, And two ps2's.
Also a crap load of games. I own all the psn store games except for all the ps1 classics,I bought all of them fl0w is relaxing, I reccomend it.
Included games of mine for my ps3 are:The GodFather:The Don's Edition,Genji days of the blade, call of duty 3,Ghost recon 2:advanced,oblivion,Madden:07, and I bought them all.

Re: PS3 repairs

You may have to completely RESET the unit, follow that procedure, it should be in the manual.  IF a power surge or voltage spike took out the unit, it may have done other damage.

Re: PS3 repairs

I was playing a PS2 game when the PS3 suddenly turned off. The game is stucked in the optical unit. Now I turn the power key on (back), the front light turns red and when I press the eject button or try to turn on the console it turns off by itself even with the back key in the on position. Do I need a new power supply or a new optical unit?

Re: PS3 repairs

Where did you get a power supply for it.  Isn't it curved to fit with the shape of the case?

Re: PS3 repairs

I've asked a lot of forums a question about this box that I picked up with no luck at all. I do console repair and decided that with the price drop it is now worth it for me to start fixing them. I bought a 60 gig model of of CL for really cheap. The guy said that it freezed during game play so I figured it was the lens.

I got it home and started it up, played games fine, however it would freeze randomly and I have to hard reboot it. I took it all apart and check each part with a fulling working ps3 to see if it had any bad parts in it. It did not.

I reflowed it the first time and put everything back together and got no light at all when I flipped the switch. I reflowed it again, this time I only plugged in the power supply to the mobo and the power/eject board. I got the red light. After that I put everything back together and again no light at all.
I ended up reflowing it one more time to see if it would change anything and I still got nothing. All the parts are good, so I don't understand what is wrong. I read that I should check the fuses but it seems to me that there is a short on the board somewhere instead. How the hell can I check for that?

I just want to get this thing up and running. If I can get this one fixed I am pretty confident that I can fix a great majority of them. Any of you guys had this happen to you with a solution? Or any suggestions at all?

I am all ear ..... eyes.

Re: PS3 repairs

I appreciate that link. I guess after doing it so often the solder could have dried out. I never really thought about that. I ordered that exact pen that he used in his Video ( $7 with free shipping on ebay)
I will post up a follow up once I get it done.

Re: PS3 repairs

I'm still waiting for the flux to get here, as long as I see lights after the application then I'll start to get all excited. I know I didn't mess the ps3 up, so I didn't sell it for parts. I will let you all know how it goes. Now it's up to fedex ...
