Supported Video Codecs - If Your Movie Won't Work, Read This!

These are the supported codecs your PS3 is able to read:

MPG
  -MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2) (.MPG)
  -MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM) (.MPG)
  -MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2) (.MPG)
  -MPEG-4 Part3 (MPEG-4 AAC Low Complexity (unprotected)) (.MP4)
  -MPEG-4 Part2 (MPEG-4 SP; MPEG-4 ASP) (.MP4)
  -MPEG-4 DivX (in AVI) (.AVI)
  -MPEG-4 H.264 (.MP4 / .M4V)
  -MPEG-4 AVC (.MP4)
DivX (.AVI / MPG)
XviD (.AVI / .MPG)
AVI (.AVI)
Motion JPEG
  -Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
  -Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
VC-1 (.WMV)
AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts )

Note - The DivX, XviD & VC-1 (.WMV) only work if you're on v2.10 or more.

Checking your video's codec: (Sent in by mick)
If you are unsure about what your video' codec is; Download GSpot. GSpot is a program which checks your video's codec. You don't even need to install anything, and it's very easy to use. How to use GSpot.

Converters:
If you video codec is non of the above, use a converter to change the compression to one that the PS3 is able to read. A good converter that I personally use is 3GP Converter. It is able to convert your videos to DivX, XviD or MPEG-4 H.264. But it's best for videos that are about 640x480 only.
It's also free and is able to convert videos for your iPod, PSP and Mobile Phone. The compression results are outstanding - I've tried programs that you had to pay for and the compression results where a bit worse than 3GP Converter's results.

Another good converter is Red Kawa's PS3 Video 9. It's able to convert video's over 640x480 (I think) and makes them compatable with the PS3. This program is also free. (More information coming soon).

Post any suggestions to make this topic better (more converters and helpful programs..etc) and please point out any mistakes. Still confused? Post a question!

Re: Supported Video Codecs - If Your Movie Won't Work, Read This!

Ok, I have been having ongoing problems with my DivX/XVids now playing on my PS3, some do and some don't.  I have now used GSpot to identiy the different versions and here are the results:-

Work OK
======
XviD 1.1.2 Final

Don't Work
=======
XviD ISO MPEG-4
XViD 1.1.0 Final
XviD 1.1.0 Beta 2
XviD 1.0.3

Can 3GP be used to convert the ones above that don't work to the version that does work, i.e. XviD 1.1.2 Final?

For the record, I am using WMP11 as my media server.

Also see this thread for a little more background on the problems and what I have been doing to workaround.

All help much appreciated.

MDavenport, I'm not sure about the XviD thing, but it's able to convert your vids to H.264, which is better than XviD. What are the resolutions of the videos?

He's referring to Super Converter. I think it's good, but does it compress the videos or do they remain the same size and just changes the codec?

Re: Supported Video Codecs - If Your Movie Won't Work, Read This!

Thanks for this.  I came here to see if the DVD I'm backing-up as a MP4 would work and it confirmed it will.  But to maybe help make this list a little more accurate, I'd like to point out that MPEG-4 H.264 and MPEG-4 AVC are the same thing.  I think it's helpful that you listed them seperatly as they can be called either but they could also be called MPEG-4 Part 10 as that's what it is without all the abbreviated letters (like MPEG-1 Part 3 is MP3)  I think this would make it a little more clear.  I also think AVI should be removed because AVI is just a container file and you could put an unsupported video in an AVI and it wouldn't work.  DivX and XviDs are just usually in an AVI so sometimes they get interchanged even though they shouldn't.  Just trying to make it as clear as possible.

Re: Supported Video Codecs - If Your Movie Won't Work, Read This!

Great topic, it's of use to me and probably many others.

Just need more info about this

Work OK
======
XviD 1.1.2 Final

Don't Work
=======
XviD ISO MPEG-4
XViD 1.1.0 Final
XviD 1.1.0 Beta 2
XviD 1.0.3

Like a program that lets you know which Xvid you're converting to before you start the process

Use ps3video9. It's designed for converting to the supported codecs and it's very easy to use. I did, however, find that it would freeze and would require a reinstall but it's worth a try. On the other hand, just stick to MPEG-4 or DivX.

Re: Supported Video Codecs - If Your Movie Won't Work, Read This!

So whats the best format to convert all non working videos into that the PS3 will play superbly..??
Whats the best format to convert videos into that are HD 720P or 1080P..??
Whats just the best all round format to convert all videos into that the PS3 can play flawlessly..??
How would you get the PS3 to play files that over 4GB since FAT32 HDD's can only handle Max file sizes of 4GB..??

Just use mkvtovob and convert to vobs (only mkvs work though). You can burn the large ones to dual layer dvds or set the converter to split the file at certain sizes. You could also have the converter to output the file on to an external HDD, just be sure that drives file format is Fat32 first.

Did you not read the post just before yours, and just about every other one that refers to MKV2VOB?
