Apple offers open source code for developers, so I'm curious to know why this hasn't been done yet?

you may be able to get darwin (the underlying bsd unix) to run on the ps3 but you won't get the Mac interface running any time soon.
First ask yourself, why doesn't Mac OS X run on PC hardware which is much more similar to newer Mac hardware than the ps3 is?

They have Mac OS X running on PC's. It's not as easy as popping in the CD and installing it, some tweaking is involved but it has been done.

i just figured since there was speculation (prior to ps3 launch) that ps3 processor was powerful enough to run os x tiger (wasn't determined then if it was powerful enough even with hypervision).
Also, now that os x is optimized for intel architecture, the that it would run okay... but we all know ps3 doesn't have intel inside ![]()
EDIT: Err i meant PowerPC processors, since the cell chip was made by IBM, thus pre-intel macs were optimized for PowerPC

The reason is not that the PS3 is powerful enough, but the OS's have to be PPC, and still some are not compatible.

OS X is PPC!
Offline
yea the os is ppc compatible, but thats not the problem. what is the real problem?

Well, like I said before, even if it is PPC, not all are compatible without tweaking, which I don't know how to do this.

Well, I recommend getting a Mac expert, not my self (I HATE MACs!!!!), and having them try and help.

Leopard (the newest mac os) has been leaked and cracked so that you can run it on any computer. It is a universal binary so you can run it on a 64 bit computer, a 32 bit computer or a PPC computer. So yes, you can run it on a ps3. The drivers are going to be nearly impossible but it could be done. Pity, the cell would go to waist though. Same with the RSX. Man, can you imagine OSX on a 60" HDTV with ambilighting...?

Just a quick FYI from a frequent lurker:
OS X relies on hardware acceleration to render it's GUI, so there would need to be someway to bypass the RSX restrictions when using other os.
Would be nice though.....

I don't get how that would be nice. In my opinion Windows would be nice.(I know that i has been done through QEMU on FC5). I mean actually Windows.

You know they released a version of Windows NT for PPC processors? I believe version 4 was the last release.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT_4.0
I reckon this is best bet for getting windows on ps3.
Offline
I know, I tried but I couldn't get anything. Waiting for someone better than me to do it.
Offline
without source code, there is no chance whatsoever to "port" windows to ps3, or any other console for that matter.
Offline
Not true, you could always have a stolen copy of windows.(teheheh....).

i dont remember properly but couldnt xbox run windows 98 on it if it did i think it would been really slow so if was able to do it and wasnt slow mabey it can run on ps3 nicely
Offline
Windows XP would run very nicely. I know this because the PS3 system is better than my home PC, lol. And, Windows runs pretty nice on my PC. Its not the question of is the PS3 capable, its that someone can do it.

Themoors - I read that 3 times and couldn't find where is said it was PPC compatible.
NEMESIS0744 - Even if you have a cracked copy of windows your not going to have the source code.
lildesiikid - the original xbox was a x86 (32bit) computer. thats why you could run win98 or win2k on it.

Offline
actually win98 only ran on xbox 1 using a DOS emulator. it never ran natively.
Offline
oh ok i thought it ran naturally

nickb827, look at 4th paragraph from the top:
"Windows NT 4.0 was the last major release of NT to support the Alpha, MIPS or PowerPC CPU architectures....."

Good Point.

Ok, I missed that part but still, running that won't do anything.
