Hi friends, please post your theories on ps2 backups WITHOUT opening the console. Great minds think alike so hopefully between us we can get some ideas going. ![]()

This is a complete guess but do you think it would be possiable to create another modifed linux operating system and install it like we would like Fedora etc?

Custom OS would be great.
Anyone know how to write, edit and work on kernel files and such?

i would have to agree siptang, custom OS would solve a whole bunch of things, maybe even let an iso loader work? and probably all the custom xmb stuff like the psp

It seems to me if you solve the PS3 problem, you solve the PS2 and PSone problems (to allow backups). And since the PS3 ISO loader is still under development, then I think its still early days to be even considering playing PS2 backups on the PS3. Or maybe not.. I mean i guess if the crew behind Swap Magic put their heads together they might be able to crack it (Blu-Ray disc?).. but i seriously doubt the answer is gonna come from this forum (no offense).

well swap magic does work for loading ps2 games on ps3 though, but other less modification ways would be nice.

maybe if we convert the ISOs to .PKG then install them via PS store

Install them via PS Store??
How are we gonna upload the .PKG to the PS Store? ![]()
And who knows, djrussel... Maybe the Unnamed PS3-Hacks Team will make this happen ![]()

There is already a method of doing this, via a program PS3 Proxy or PS3 Proxy Server...this is what has been used to download and install the WARHAWK beta
Just read more on the pkg file idea and it has a very good discussion going on, on ps3news, so it appears people have been working to create their own pkg files, but I think it will be worth a shot at to try and come up with our own.

oo! ive never thought of that before. i think that could have a shot at working!

^^^^ IF someone could spoof the PSStore from their computer, have the ps3 connect to that (ie the ps3 thinks its connected to a router/modem) and host it thru that it would make it work. maybe.
EDIT: Oh just reread TARDY's Post, you already can. Sorry if that was REALLY newbish.

These sound like great ideas but, aren't the .PKG files digitally signed/encrypted by Sony? I don't think it would work unless they have Sony's signature.
Offline
then you could possibly look into either making a fake signiature or perhaps try to modify an existing pkg file with the iso/elf of what you are trying to make
Offline
I think that this is not possible. It would come out as corrupted data on the PS3 even if you managed to convert the ISO to PKG.
It's like grabbing a PSP update eboot.pbp and hex editting it... It comes up as corrupted data.
Only SONY can make a PKG work on the PS3

make FAKE sign/encrytion by our hackers ![]()
this may work

Im not putting the whole converting method down, but just to point out think about how long it would take to transfer a PS3 ISO over an internet connection to the PS3 ![]()

PS store how do you transfer demos from PC to PS3

Offline
PS3proxy
Offline
the same way but dont put PS3 demos put PS2 converted ISO (PKG)

can't swap magic method be used in a way that it will be the basis but have to create a totally new program based on it that will make the ps3 eject the disc automatically and req to insert the other disc?just my 2cent's over here....since the method really works..

,Damn that would take long. All worth it though.

I doubt ejecting would ever work.... same reason it does not on the old ps2s.... the swap magic works (to my understanding) not by tricking the ps2 into readin burnt discs but simply a pause so you can swap out the disc since the disc check is already complete and the table of contents set.. So it does not read burnt games it just reads a real disc and you swap it out.... if you were to eject the disc the whole toc and disk check would be completed again and would not work as a swap....

it will not if direct eject..but would it be possible to create a program and put together with the swap magic or any other program that can be created by our proggrammer, to make it work like the swap, and then tricking the console into staying in that pause mode for maybe a minute, and the program itself will automatically eject the disc (like gameshark for ps2-cheat codes of course) and then we just insert the new disk and after the pause mode disappear, it will continue again at where it's stop.....maybe can maybe not.....just my 2cents again....

what about installing a ps2 bios as the other os? cracked and everything, allowing it to read burnt discs.
