I work at a game store, and we have a PS3 kiosk. Of course, everything is locked on it, and it's written "Demonstration mode" in the bottom right of the screen.
However,I've seen the local Sony rep turn off the demo mode. It seemed to have been a keypress combination, since he had put his coat over the controller and I heard a "CLICK!". (I think the L3/R3 buttons are related, since the sound I heard sounded similar).
Does anyone have any info on this? I'm surprised to have found absolutely no info on the topic.
I would appreciate any info. Thanks a bunch. ![]()

Ofcourse they are real ps3s.
They probably just have some kinda security program on there. It wouldn't explain it any other way.
Even though we find out the sequence of these keys what good will it do us?
We are not in demo mode so I don't know how this will affect local ps3 users....
just my 2 cents.
What game store do you work in anyways?

Well, the original KIOSK discs for the Xbox360 were copyable with no special hardware, and would run on the Xbox360. There was a security hole in the disc, and anyone could use any Kiosk disc image (ISO) burned to a DVD+R DL, in their Xbox360 at home. A dashboard update fixed that problem.
Maybe they were thinking along the same lines, except the PS3 kiosk runs off the HDD, I don't think there is a disc in the drive.

ahh i see.
I didn't think of it like that.
It's good to hear different opinions.

You are correct, there is no disc in the drive. However, today, our Sony rep tried updating our demo unit with a disc, but failed. That's when I noticed him doing it. That disc was a totally normal "blank" disc. It had no label whatsoever, and he told me that he could've copied it at home, if he had blank discs.
Could the code be made so that it would run off any media?
*EDIT* He failed because of corrupted data on the disc, apparently.
Btw, I work at Future Shop. I don't particularly want to do anything to the unit if I ever get it unlocked, I'm just very curious, and I think most people who lurk on these forums are.
Who knows what we might learn. That disc might actually prove to be much more useful to you guys than the demo unit.

ha. Now I'm getting very interested as well...
I'll try to see what's the deal on that also.
My friend's a local gamestop manager.. let me ask him if a Sony guy comes to his store.

hey babelman, what FS? I'm at Store 32 in Winnipeg here. I know the exact "Demo Mode" you're talking about. But our sony rep hasn't been by in a while and she doesn't really know much about the console, so if I ask her about the demo mode, she had no response. Didn't even realize that it was in demo mode. Otherwise I'd look

I'm in 651, in Montreal. Huge store in the middle of downtown.

is the demo mode still stupid to where it freezes the ps3 everso often so it can cool down? or have they takin that off of demo mode?

for some reasons, the ps3 demo always heat up in the store. i put my hand on the display unit w/ ps3 hidden under the bottom. so hilarious that they make us think is the ps3 in the air tight display is the true unit.
Offline
well, the PS3s in stone are hidden behind the display one, and sure it gets hot, but that space is cramped. I am so surprised that it's still running since there's almost no air flow... Guess this is another marvel at Sony... Considering if a 360 was in the same enclosure... it'd be toast, long time ago. Hell, it's toast even sitting on shelves in people's homes.

Well not to be whatever but there are only 25( 4 dirtection + 4 symbols + 6 L and R buttons + select + start + ps + 8 analog directions) different possible keys (assuming diagonal analog would be too finicky) and to try a combo would take 5 seconds....
#of keys in combo time
1 2m 5s
2 52m 5s
3 55d
So take two months off from work and figure it out.........
Or just ask... either way lol depends on your financial standing and free time

Well this is my first post here but I just though of a great idea.
Back when GTA San Andreas was released a hacker wired up the PS2 button controller to a PCs Parallel Port and had the computer perform numerous button combinations to find missing cheats that Rockstar had created but didn't release. This is the quote from the forums in 2005 from the author "It's not an inside source or anything like that. I found them by scanning codes at high speed. I wired up a game pad to a PC's parallel port using optocouplers"
Here is a picture:
I wonder if someone could write software that would do the same for the PS3 and enter all possible combinations in order to find the correct one.

Well, the PS3 can be updated by disc, the firmware an nat. They probably have firmware file (PUP) with the goodies on the disc that all gets installed at the same time. It would be a signed product, from SOny, and copyable anywhere, but the main issue us what is IN the update that is installed, the demos and so forth.
Again, if there are KEY presses to bypass the security to install stuff, that would be interesting. Most everything has a back door....

L1 + R1 + SELECT + SQUARE.
Enter the Four digit password (each firmware comes with a new password, which can be later changed).
And you're out of Demo mode.
There are still some restrictions on what can be done on an IDU.
Also you can't reflash the firmware back to a non-shop version. I've tried and it doesn't recognise the .PUP ![]()

Thank you for this information. Do you hold the buttons at one time or one after another ?

Cool topic, I had read the topic name of a post "stuck in demo mode" on a different forum (PSxScene) but neglected to ever read the info...turns out some guy ended up buying a PS3 that was stolen from a gamestop or something...
In the end somebody posted this...
In security settings press and hold select + square + L1 and L2 ant then if its ask for a code insert 5202...
This works on FW 1.5 PS3 consoles.
It was back on 5/21...
If I am allowed to post the link (moderator permission) i will.

well can we put our commercial ps3's in demo mode?

Offline
give some of those button combos a shot!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that you need to do the combination when you've got Security Settings in the Settings Bar selected ![]()
So go down to it and the do the combo.
You can't access the PSN Store even when no longer in demo mode, however there's an option called Install Package Files ![]()
I've tried installing some of the .pkg files from multiple regions in it, but they all give the error code 80029564 and it seems no one knows what it means.
Renaming them from the original string doesn't work either unless there's a specific name required.
It might have been the way I burned the CD, but it wouldn't recognise the files, but on a Memory Stick they were sweet as to recognise, just not to install.
Interestingly, unlike the FW updates where you need a root folder PS3/UPDATE/UPDATE.PUP, these .pkg files were only seen if they sat in the root directory.
Interesting nonetheless ![]()

No, the IDUs have custom Shop firmware. When updating the console over the network it comes up with "1.x Shop".

I tried that combo Terrence posted on an IDU at a local Wal-Mart last night and it didn't work. I made sure that I was on System Settings while putting in and nothing happened. I guess they must've updated the shop fimware which changed the code. I even had a camera ready to show it actually working, I also tried about 55 other combos (literally) and I got nothing. I said "oh well, screw it" and started watching an Ultimate Alliance trailer that i'd never seen, and after that, I started playing a Motorstorm demo and it froze 2 minutes into the race which didn't surprise me seeing as how they have the PS3 on 24/7 in a locked case (definite overheating).
I know this will be somewhat of a double post, but it's been 5 days since my last post in this thread, so it shouldn't really matter.
