I think it will be very goooooood, some "boot mkv player" or something ,like PMP player on PSP, for HD Mkv files to play on PS3. I have bunch of HD movies in 720p mkv.

VLC quality isn't that great. (on ps3 at least)

Doesn't support HD i heard. (YET...)

Vlc on my ps3 Linux is weird. most movie files open up, some don't, but try and open a mkv file with it and it just opens and closes? Anyone got any ideas?

Theres a Linux version of media player classic??? VLC opens pretty much all avis and files anyway, just mkvs don't work at all.

to my knowledge ( i could be wrong..) there's no media player classic on linux.

VLC or the Mplayer is the way to go.. (they both suck on ps3 though...)

Why is Linux for PS3 so half assed. I use Linux on my computer it everything works.

Because you have access to all the hardware features of your GPU, and access to ALL your hardware in the PC, where as on the PS3; you DO NOT. If you did, then game backup players could be made through linux; especially PS1 and PS2, and a good PS1/PS2 HDD Loader... Access to the RSX is holding back good development in Linux for PS3, makes you wonder why they bothered to allow it to be installed...

With files in MKV format; I have to covert them to MPEG2 with a program I got. It still works well, takes a while... Still, the end result is a decent HD MPEG2.

Yeah but Jesus. Can't even play a video without something going wack. I guess I'm not missing out on much. I don't always have my PS3 on an HDTV so I can't really use Linux. I think I'll reformat the HDD and bet those 10gig back as I'm running out of room. BUt now that I think of it...if I back up everything, will it put protected game saves back. I have a bunch of stuff for Rock Band and I'd be very disappointed if I lost all of it. I don't see why EA has to protect the saves. It's not a big deal if you use someone else's game data to play on. Seriously.

You can torrent Yellow Dog Linux 6.0, before it becomes available on the public mirrors.
I have it.
It works pretty quickly, compared to the 5.0 that I had, previously.
The added space in the swap file probably helped.

Im not installing anything till i get an external hdd. Dont want to loss everything. Plus my rock band data. I hate EA. If they arent benifiting from something then we shouldnt. Thats what they think

I didn't meant to imply anything as far as .mkv files; I'm sorry to have mislead you.
As an operating system, it is much quicker, et cetera.
I have not used it for viewing .mkv files.
I realize that my post was not on-topic, and apologize.

its not the ps3 itself, It has to do with software support and the fact that it doesnt have enough power under linux to get the movie running which could be causing the player to close when it trys to play.

give it a good year or so and you may see stand alone MKV players just like DivX. Matroska are planning it. I hope ps3 down the track will include mkv support. That will be the hierarchy of compatibility.
