Getting your external harddrive recognized in XMB

Harddrive must be formated into Fat32 partition.

You need a computer that supports LBA48 (48-bit Logical Block Addressing)

We, the people from this forum recommend,
DOS FDISK,
Partition Magic,
Seagate WD Boot Disc

which will allow you  go past the 137GB limitation on Fat32 partition.

Re: Getting your external harddrive recognized in XMB

On partition magic, do u have to create partitions of less than 137gigs or u  can format in Fat32 a 500gigs hard drive without partitioning it (How???)...
Also, if i install the hard drive on my PS3, and install linux afterwards, will i have to reformat it and reinstall it on the PS3 or there won't be any problem?

Thanks for ur help guys (I'm a mac user so sorry for asking probably easy questions about basic PC software)

That a good idea LeifErikson. siptang you could spit the other hard drive guide you made into sections one section called Installing new hard drive and an other called hard drive recognized in XMB or whatever you want to call it lol.

Thing was that for the other one was internal.
This one is for external.

Do you think I should?

I think you should it would make life so much easier you could spit it into two sections internal and external.

Slightly off topic but, my hard drive claims to only have 50GB free where is the rest? Tekken only takes 500mb, and that's all i've installed!

The Ps3 will store some info on the HDD when it formats it. To speculate it would be some form of identifier, signature to be unique to your machine.

The Internal PS3 HDD, is neither FAT32 or NTFS and thus not viewable when connected to ur PC. I believe that it could be ExFat or possibly their own made FAT64. It is possible that it could be viewed under the Vista OS but as of yet I have not tested this. As I did read somewhere that Vista allows you to format flash drives using exFAT.

if i get an external harddrive what do i have to do? how would i go about formatting it? Would an external HDD work with the internal one missing?

you have to read the HDD replacement TUT!!

it said in the first post

so if you have a big HDD, get either of these programs and format it using FAT32

keep the internal HDD in the ps3 unless you are replacing it with a bigger one; the ext. acts like a mem.stick and the ps3 relies on the int.

Re: Getting your external harddrive recognized in XMB

Try Fat32format:

http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/fat32format.htm

I formatted 250 GB hard drive in fat32 with no problem. However, I couldn't figure out how to paste a 5GB video file to the drive.

Re: Getting your external harddrive recognized in XMB

since it's fat32 you can't, unless you split the video into 2 parts or put it on the internal hdd wich dous not have the 4GB limit.

Re: Getting your external harddrive recognized in XMB

I just got a 500 gig seagate external 7200 RPM.  I formatted using Swissknife, only problem I am seeing ATM is SLOW load times tring to view all my files, such as movies, music, ect.  It takes about 10 mins just to view all the movies I have stored on it.

Should i reformat using a differnt program? change the cluster size?

Re: Getting your external harddrive recognized in XMB

Figured it out...

It's not the hard drive thats lagging, but the PS3..  It doesn't use enough ram to get all the icons and information fast enough... hoping that they will soon add extra folders, and such so that you can get it to read faster.  Or something...

Make sure your drive in under 500gb, i dont think that the ps3 cant handle anything more than that...

also Once you format your drive to Fat32 you must have a drive letter, assigned to the drive.

Also the External Box that you use for the Hard Drive must not be a sata hard drive inside...

Well on some basis some external controllers do support SATA to USB, but what i relised that some Chinca products and cheap brands dont actually work on the ps3... I use Vantec Nexstar LX with 320GB HDD IDE to USB 2.0

That's really not much of a tutorial. A tutorial is a step by step guide, this is certainly not a tut... sigh

Right, but there's really not much to it.
Since there was alot of request for it at the time, I just slapped something together.
If you wish to put one on, feel free. I'll gladly erase this one and put yours on. smile

Re: Getting your external harddrive recognized in XMB

I did the exact same thing you want to do, only I transferred my data from my 40GB PS3 to a 320GB PS3. You can't just swap the hard drives out as each time a new drive is put in, it gets formatted and all the data inside becomes deleted.

Get a external hard drive thats formatted to FAT32 (If your gonna get a new external hard drive, its worth asking the people in the store if its FAT32 before you buy) and then connect it to the PS3 via the USB ports.

Once its connected, go to the XMB and go to Settings (2nd from left after the Users). Scroll down to "System Settings" and choose "Backup Utility". Click on that and then choose to backup your data. It should ask you where you want to backup your data and provided that your External HDD is formatted to FAT32 and connected properly to the PS3, it should be recognised. Choose that external HDD and then it should start to make a backup. This can take some time, depending on how much stuff you have on your PS3.

Once you have all your data onto your external HDD, connect that with your new PS3 Slim. Go to the XMB and then the same thing "Settings" -> "System Settings" -> "Backup Utility" but this time instead of choosing to backup, choose "Restore". The PS3 will recognise the external HDD and then you choose the data that is backed up on it. Its a good idea to leave the external HDD empty apart from the backed up data. The backed up data will come up as numbers which is the date and time you backed it up on. Choose that file and then, bobs your uncle, your old data will be saved onto your new PS3 slim.
