It would seem Geohot just couldn’t hack the big leagues… You know what it’s like when your girlfriend(s) is/are constantly hounding and demanding things of you? Well multiply that by hundreds of thousands. I guess that’s how Geohot felt — “unlock this, jailbreak that, gimme PS3 CFW” etc… You’ll notice his Twitter feed has vanished and his PS3 blog is now invite only.
Unfortunately I missed his last few tweets but plenty of other sites are reporting this:
- it was a cool ride, and i’ve learned a lot about a lot. perhaps one of these days i’ll do a more formal goodbye.
- I didn’t fully realize most of the current scene don’t care unless they are getting something. Now I do.
- The real reason behind no release isn’t technical. It’s just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered. I miss the days when jailbreaking and unlocking were difficult, it attracted a much higher caliber crowd.
Say what you will but you and I both know Geohot possesses mad skill. You gotta respect that. So kudos Geohot, good luck with your future endeavours. Thanks for the removal of OtherOS. ;)
Now if you’re wondering whether or not you should upgrade to the latest PS3 firmware or remain at 3.15 — that’s entirely up to you. Other PS3 hackers are likely to pick up where Geohot left off; it’s a sure bet they already have.

I don’t think Geohot owes the community anything, he found an exploit and made it public. In doing so, Sony decided that they were going to remove the feature.
Personally, I think Geohot is an arrogant fake, posting videos and pictures showing off what he can do, and then getting annoyed when people ask him to do it. If you don’t want publicity don’t make yourself out to be a celebrity. The hacking community has always been needy and always will be and i’m sure he knew this coming into it. I believe he left because there is no real hack, and there never was. He can’t accomplish the job he told the public he could, now he has to retreat and disappear or they’ll keep asking for it. A lucky person that let pride win.
I wish him the best in all his ventures, hopefully the situations he brought on himself have taught him a lesson for the future.
I don’t blame him to be honest, everywhere I look everyone is insulting him or demanding the hack to be out.
And with all the s**t he gets from the iPhone scene too, I’m not even sure why he bothered to enter the PS3 scene – just the same old idiots demanding stuff and not giving anything in return.
Hackers don’t hack to be servants; they hack for freedom, to get the most out of their hardware/software or for personal enjoyment.
I don’t think 99% of the people following this understand any of it, hacking is extremely difficult – not a 5 minute job.
And what’s even more funny is that a lot of the people complaining that Other OS has been removed probably barely used it.
From what I’ve learnt from searching around the removal of Other OS wasn’t even entirely GeoHot’s fault, whilst he found an exploit allowing him to “peek” and “poke” the memory, another group found out a method to backup blue-ray disks.
Seriously, I challenge anyone who just goes “HACK THIS NOW” to actually attempt hacking a console like this, then realise how hard it is. I bet only a minority will even know where to start.
You should blame him. Geohot obviously entered the ps3 scene because he just craves attention. Appearing in the news, constantly updating his blogs and even blatantly lying just to get even more attention. Combine that with ADD and you’ve got someone who in rare occasions will deliver what he promised, but most of the time will just disappoint his followers. Sad, since he has basically created something close to a cult (these sad souls are still protecting him, even though he does not deserve it).
In the end, if you publicly promise to release something and tell people to not go online/update, you have to deliver. There would have been no issue if he had not.

I know I’m not the first one to say this, but this guy breaks the PS3 security and publicly makes a stink about this. That’s all well and good, but that caused Sony to punish everyone by removing the OtherOS functionality. Now, a good person, knowing they caused this, would have followed through with a CFW for those that were affected. This guy, Geohot, cowardly exits the scene without even making up for this problem. The guy might be technically smart, but he is also a bad person. I don’t say this about everyone, but this guy made a mistake and screwed all of you and ran away. If I were the stalker type, I would find this guy and give him a good wooping for the entire community. I don’t like Sony’s actions usually, but I hope at least they sue him to oblivion and take all his possessions. Rot in hell, Geohot.

I never fully understood how Geohot hacked the PS3 because you would have to reflash the PS3 with custom firmware or do a hardware bypass.
Hacked meaning he gained access to full memory when compiled and run in kernel mode but now since otherOS was removed, how then will one use the exploit unless they stay under older firmware?
Lets say one will stay with the older firmware and use his exploit.
From here will have to use a linux OS (or any otherOS compatible OS/script) for most our needs and rewrite/emulate all the functions we want from the XMB OS.

How did he dump or get the firmware decrypted?
Supposedly there was a release of CFW without a hardware hack that brought back otherOS so essentially Geohot is only showing part of his exploit.
He showed how he gained access which is great but that still doesn’t do anything outside of otherOS with a hardware mod.
What he is holding back is how after he gained access, he was able to customize the official XMB which he never explained.
Sony either threatened to sue him or offered him a signed settlement.

So US Library of congress has voted that “Jailbreaking” is a perfectly legal practice and System modding also. So lomg story short it is NO LONGER ILLEGAL to hack your PS3, PSP, XBOX 360, or WII or what have you. So get the hacking people cause its all good. Pireting on the other hand is bad hmmmkaaaayyy.

his shitty ram exploit never got him full access to the SPUs (most the ps3s power) the only homebew code that could possible run on the exploited ps3 was limited to the single PPU which clocks roughly at 3.2ghz. at most you might have got PS2 backups running on it. may as well work on a ps2 emulator on PC which offers more Processing power.

FYI this is patented by Sony and using it will result in a huge ass lawsuit.
