OtherOS Will Not Be Removed From non-Slim PS3 Models

Following up on this post where it was rumoured OtherOS may possibly be removed in a later firmware update has been debunked by SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment). In a mailing list post from Geoff Levand, PS3-Linux maintainer, he says SCE management has provided this tidbit:

Please be assured that SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the “Install Other OS” feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases.

Well that’s good news. Lets party!

Thanks for the link, sternn.

The consoles that couldnt play them before wont be able to play them ever, because they lack the emotion engine which is for ps2 games.

I remember reading an article explaining that the problem with software emulation on the PS3 is that many games will have serious issues with it due to how they were programmed. It turns out quite a few games were coded outside of Sony’s official PS2 design specs.

With the original hardware built-in, the launch PS3s had no problem with PS2 games, even the out-of-spec ones. When they started doing half hardware, half software emulation, they started running into issues. If they tried full software emulation, serious problems would likely pop up.

My guess is because they still have an excellent margin on PS2 units (and they still sell well), there’s no hurry to reintroduce hardware emulation.

geococks is a gay who thought he’d hacked the ps3, but in truth is still nowhere NEAR hacking it to the level that’s needed to run copied games.

It just won’t happen, therefore Sony will not remove OtherOS and are probably laughing their jap asses off at that fucktard

Your an idiot – “hacking” does not mean that you can run pirated games, an geohot never stated that was his goal. The goal was to find an exploit in the system that could lead to running unsigned code, and that has been accomplished.

To anon:

Yeah to run unsigned code, and eventually to pirate. Of course Geohat’s going to he doesn’t condone piracy, that way he doesn’t have Sony or anyone else coming after him with legal suits or matters. Secondly the ability to run unsigned code isn’t going to happen on the level you hope without breaking the CElL’s hardware security which Geohat’s bug couldn’t defeat.

Wrong…….and since when does claiming a hack isn’t for piracy protect you from legal problems. It doesn’t. One more thing you are clueless about in addition to your understanding of the PS3 architecture.

From what I can infer, the lack of the OtherOS on the slim is both a business and technical reason. The slim has completely different hardware (as evidenced its immunity to the recent leap year bug), and would require a new interface to allow OtherOS functionality. Developers’ time is expensive, good developers doubly so.

If Sony can be convinced that it would be a sound investment to put in the time and money required to get OtherOS implemented on the slim, they’ll probably do it.

This is great news. I am happy to hear this after the recent ps3 bug which seems to be fixed now. My 80gb(not backwards compatible) wouldn’t connect to the store and home is working fine now.

Just a thought, just put it out there, but wasn’t the PS3 (Phat) sold as a ‘Computer System’ as opposed to a ‘Games Console’ as to avoid certain taxes?! So if they were to remove the facility for it to perform as a ‘Computer System’, would they then not be liable to (re)pay said avoided taxes?? Just a thought …

they wanted to market and sell the ps3 as a media system rather than a games console “studioeng” but they werent allowed. whoever makes those kind of decisions didnt really understand what the ps3 was and assumed because it played games it was a console.. so theres no avoided taxes or anything like that. i dont think theres any tax breaks on computers compared to consoles anyway. certainly not here in the uk.

sony didnt want it labelled as a console because they wanted to draw consumers attention to its other capabiltys – bluray, internet etc. even now half the people who have a ps3 are barely aware it can do other things.

good to hear theyre not removing the otheros support. ive never used it myself but nice to know its there.

It’s fair since I did pay more for my FAT PS3. TWICE the slim price.
Don’t know why they removed otherOS from the slim though.

maybe someone hack your PSN and buy some games with your credit card, he can create a user with your PSN account and download the games you have on your PS3 store to his PS3, just check what was was those $5 for and change your email and password

i thought they wouldn’t. it would cause too many problems–wayy to many people would complain, and it would be a big mess.

by the way, i like what you did with the website. Grey was such a dull, boring color, but red really brightened things up.

cant any of you see that keeping the other OS function on the ps3 will only serve to deter reverse engineers from finding Holes and exploits in Sony’s original XMB supported software.. taking the other OS function out of the system would force the home-brew scene to focus on the original hardware and software. Not Linux so the system would be hacked 10x faster…. does any other system have an “other OS function” no, and is every other system hacked wide open, yes. Bring on the custom firmware, and keep up the good work Geo! lets see an ISO loader! then I’ll change my tune, till then I’ll just keep checking this site,

enabling Linux on a ps3 is doing nothing more than enabling people to run Unix code which is highly dated (1969?), and i would assume painstaking to work with when programing advanced code such as what needed with for the ps3. If anything THIS is what the Japanese are laughing at, Americans trying to hack a Japanese system with an American OS, good luck, regardless of how stable and awesome Linux is…

i wouldn’t be surprised if Sony leaked that exploit that GEO found just to further deter people from hacking the system though its original XMB. As they have a team of people pouring over every bit of code that is written for the system finding exploits and patching them upon release OR shortly prior :p thanks 4 reading me

PS: (emulation is nice geo, but a novelty in today’s world of tiny open source capable devices ie: the PSP, Gizmondo, I-phone, and I-pod Touch, to name a few) Not to mention the fact that anyone with a PC can emulate just about any system as long as there’s a little dust on it. emulation was exciting when i was 10. BRING ON THE CFW!!!!!!!!!

Uhm, dude, linux is the opposite of “highly dated”. Also, linux is a Swedish OS, not an American one. Well, sort of – linux was started by a Swede. It’s developed by millions of people around the world, though. So maybe it’s a Terran OS.

Linux is better at everything than Windows, and if you pay attention to any sort of technical anything, you’d see the vast waves of Windows users getting fed up and moving to some form of linux. Of course, software companies still primarily support Windows, which makes a lot of people want to stick with it, but that’s not the doing of Microsoft or linux. From a technical standpoint, looking exclusively at the OS and not the software that supports it, linux is so very much better than Windows that there really isn’t a comparison. On the other hand, if you absolutely NEED iTunes or something like that, getting it running in linux is tough. Doable, but tough.

Heck, even IBM, a major corporation that used to be partnered with Microsoft, thinks linux is the future:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwL0G9wK8j4

And for a few examples of exactly why people are moving to linux:

e17 with compositing (my personal favorite graphical interface):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKXXVZs9Hgg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZBGkuhiZCo

Installing a Windows game on linux:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnS-gf6FLLY

Also, geo released the exploit on his blog. He wasn’t sure if he was going to, but ended up doing so. After all, knowledge should be free.

However, you are right: Sony removing linux from the PS3 is going to suddenly make people want to hack it. The reason it hasn’t been hacked is that no one really cared while linux was available – now that Sony’s getting rid of linux support, there are a very large number of extremely smart developers who are going to get up and start coding. Basically, Sony has declared war on linux users, and we’re not a lay-down-and-take-it bunch. They are going to lose.

I’m just hoping they’ll see how many problems their removing linux support is going to cause for them and they add linux support again before the full force of hackers (and by ‘hackers’, I mean ‘programmers’, in this case) pours onto the PS3 and makes Sony look stupid for the billionth time this console generation.

This is bullshit that Sony would get rid of the “install other OS.” It’s like every time they come out with an update, they always have to fuck everything up.
