We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.
Errors include:
- The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
- When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
- When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
- When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
- Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.
ETA: within the next 24 hours… Hopefully.
Uh oh… I hope this isn’t the beginning of Judgment Day… Reported around the triple w and I’ll confirm the same; I am receiving error 8001050F on my original (non-Slim) PS3 when attempting to sign into PSN. And with my PS3 Slim I can login just fine. Bizarre. What’s Sony up to—are they prepping a possible firmware update or did someone over there press a wrong button? I’d imagine Sony’s bright red phone is ringing off the hook right about now.
Anyway, hopefully things will be back up soon. Sony is aware of the problem and they are working to resolve it. Bust some Wii Fit while you wait. We’ll keep you posted on the APOCALYPS3.

I think it is someone in the ps3 hacking scene who hacked into psn, and is targeting the old ps3s through the otheros so as to bypass some security thing and make an isoloader
on the slim.why wait till now to correct it on the phat ps3..?

8001050F Error, but I was not kicked. It wasn’t until I logged off to watch a movie that it came. When I went back to play nothing would work. So the problem is something trying to run on initial log in, “geohot hack checker perhaps”, that is not coded right and is screwing up systems.
yea best guess would be sony is working on something to check for “phats” with exploits and they just f—ed up something bad. why else would only the “phats” be effected. My guess is Sony is trying to build its own ban hammer.

It’s because of the leap year guys, the PS3 tries to change the clock to the 29th of February but can’t cause a major conflict, that’s the issue at had!
I just checked my wall and PC calendars, I dont think its leap year, they both say only up to the 28th.
My bf and I both have ps3s he has the 40gb and I have the 250gb. Mine is fine and his is no longer working, not much info on net. Both have same firmware update but 4 some reason my will still log on. He can also access his account on my system.

ok here’s what I think is happening. Sony may have considered the fact that hacked PS3s could compromise the PSN somehow, putting everyone’s personal data and financial info at risk. They decided to lock out all older PS3 models that are currently able to be hacked, until they could implement security measures to protect their network. However long this takes, they don’t care. For all of us stuck with fat PS3s, we are SOL until then…

PSN works …at least for me and everone i have talked with. No problem what so ever and I am using a phat PS3 80GB. And maybe this is a problem in US? I am in Sweden now and nobody I have talked with have any problems with the PS3 not logging in to PSN. Is everyone in the US having this problem? What about Japan, Korea and China?

This was sony’s counter attack for geohotz hack but it went bad it triggered all consoles with the (other OS) function.

Might be old news, but thanks to a certain hardware/software guru, and from various of sources and efnet they are able to at least give the letdown why this problem is happening. Quoted.
Well the gist is that the ARM SYSCON CPU that is used to power up the front panel of the ps3, that is responsible for doing things like sleep mode, eject, RTC etc. Is an old batch that sony picked up from the shelf like other manufacturers that has that calendar year bug regarding feburary 29th on certain periods. Causing the ps3 system clock and the real time clock to desync, messing up security measures like Digital Rights management software and sometimes games that relies on clocks for whatever reason. As well as signing up to the playstation network… This CPU is always on even when your PS3 isn’t plugged
This is the one of the same type of CPUs that is powering up mobile devices like zune and blackberries, they have been affected with this bug, so they done some software patches. A syscon update can also fix this problem
The Slims ps3s aren’t affected because they use a newer up to date revision on the syscon cpu that fixes this bug.
A quick way to fix this is to remove the RTC battery for at least 5-10 min and plug it back in, you will see the date and time reset, and voila…
BTW all this was quoted from some ps3 hardware gurus and tested by various of peeps on efnet, all thanks to them for the information!
how do I remove the RTC battery? where is it located? i have 2 PS3s and I have taken both of them apart down to the motherboard before. I’m pretty confident I can do this if I know what I’m looking for. Also, how about creating a brand new account or just reformatting the PS3 entirely and starting over?

I don’t think Sony is going to be able to easily undo the harm they’ve done, since we can’t access PSN, and therefore can’t do any update.
I can only think of a USB firmware update. If they do publish that sort of counter-measure, I suggest some clever guy take a look at the update and see if there might be a flaw in it that could help tweak the little bugger, and – why not – softmod the ps3.

Funny shit though lets say I bought mw2 updated my ps3 whether the problem be from a recent update or a manufactured problem im stuffed either way, Neways lets also say I cant afford internet and/or have no way of getting internet or a really new game for that matter (I say this because they release patches on newer games).
Basically my only option is too send my ps3 back to sony or try to get a refund from my reatailer, Unless of course my Ps3 magically fixes itself overnight.

FYI I have found a work around that pinky works if you are lucky. U should all know the cause is that the ps3 can’t register the date donut goes back to 1999 in that everithing gets messed up. So if yesterday u did not touch your system and let the whole day pass by (24 houers) and turned it on this morning you should of been fine because it had no time to check time and date online. So if u didn’t turn it on at all yesterday. Go play, atleast that’s what I’m doing on my lol chubby lmfao!!

Hey, anyone with a WORKING “fat” PS3, please report your firmware version. Perhaps it’s a firmware-hardware combo issue.
You may be on to something since i have reinstalled my firmware when I switched my harddrive to a bigger one. I downloaded the firmware from playstations homepage and used a USB drive to reinstall it on my PS3.
My phat PS3 firmware is 3.15
And it is working online. Downloaded Yakuza 3 demo a little while a ago :-)
ps: I heard that removing and then replacing the battery on the main board will fix this. It will void the warranty though, but i suspect most fat PS3′s have had their warranty run out already. So who wants to volunteer? :-)

i’ve had confirmation about two friends having this issue, so it’s everywhere if its happening in paradise itself (i’m in Mauritius) …
sure hope a fix is found soon, won’t turn on the machine a few days to avoid data corruption or whatever else, else would disconnect it from the net first.

so i read somewhere that it’s the ps3′s first even numbered non-leap year, 2007 and 2009 where odd and 2008 was a leap year. this may have something to do with the front panel cpu clock de-sync with the other cpu clock, like Mihai Olimpiu Cristian said.(arm syscon cpu: same cpu that zunes and blackberrys use) when one tries to go to feb 29th and the other one to mar 1st? that’s sick!! that means that i lost every game(corrupted copyright keys down the drain!!) my friend and i bought with his account (i have no credit card and psn store card are not easy to find around here) and of course he won’t give me his psn password! that means he needs to drive 100km back to my place to download our games again!! (if he gave me his password i would be able to get ALL the games on his account… heheheheh… XD )

Remopviing RTC battery works, tested on 60 GB PAL FAT PS3, the battery is located near the cooling fan under the ps3 motherboard… Just unplug, leave for 10 minbytes and then put all together again.. pretty easy job with the right tools tool me 20 minutes to do (including 10 minutes waiting period…).
On a side nopte it took me more than 30 minutes to clean the damn thing while it was opened, the dust it was there oh what a nightmare… On the bright side now it’s SILENT again….
i think this is a ploy to force old model ps3 users to update and lose there abilty to run other O.S. on there old style PS3 it just to conveient if so i will never buy another sony product ever again
if ur like me and u have a 40 GB model… ur SOL… the RTC battery is located on the mobo itself… so u’d have to remove ur fan/heatsink from the motherboard to access the battery, reapplly new thermal paste and put it back together if u want to get to the battery… here’s a pic to show u wat i’m talking about… i don’t have any thermal paste on me, and i don’t think it’s worth it to go buy it just to be able to play today… i’ll wait till tomorrow… my best guess is sony will send out a mass email to everyone w/ where to d/l a new firmware where we’ll have to upload it to a flashdrive to update our systems since we can’t access PSN

hey I was just thinking, has anyone without an OtherOS installed had this problem. meaning you DO NOT have linux or anything other than the PS3os installed on your system. since some people don’t have this problem it might only be effecting people you used OtherOS before which might be evidence that sony is working on some type of check.

I have two sides to tell. I’ve got 2 UK 60GB and a Jap 60GB which have all gone funky and a UK 80GB which is working perfectly. My cousin has a 40GB which is also ‘broke’.
A list of mine and my cousins:

PSN is working again
So it WAS PSN which was to blame, NOT the actual console itself. We’ve been playing LBP most of the night offline, with the network disabled and now it is working, no update, no internet connection at all… The plot thickens!!

It is quite simple if you really think about it:
1. George Hotz releases news that he was able to access to the entire system memory on Phat PS3. His information has been documented. http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/
2. Sony takes notice, does not say anything and works quietly on their response…
3. Next firmware upgrade for PS3 contained certain code Sony sneaked in to try to close up the possible loophole exploited by Hotz.
4. Many Phat PS3 owners suddenly notice unusual behaviour on their consoles. Not all of them, but the ones who have had the latest firmware.
5. Slim PS3s are not affected at all.
6. Sony is trying to close the crack in their system, and it looks like they have now created a bigger monster. We will see.
7. Sony will release a new update, this time turning off anything that was activated by their previous patch, in the hope of disabling the hypervisor hack on their Phat PS3s.
8. Sony may have in fact tried to close down any loopholes in the Phat PS3s since the system has been opened for homebrew, and more!
Unfortunately I doubt this assumption very much. Even ps3s that weren’t online (mine hadn’t been for over a year) got the problem. Also, strangely enough, without ever going online again after the glitch my system fixed itself.
This is something that was clearly NOT something sony implemented as their systems had no way of accessing mine prior to add the glitch or after to fix it. It’s clearly some problem with the systems themselves that sony overlooked.
